In 1978, the idea of a live disco album seemed almost laughable; that the album was by Donna Summer, whose studio creations were polished to a futuristic gloss never seen before by producer/writers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, seemed downright ludicrous. The naysayers forgot, however, that Donna Summer possessed one of the finest voices not only in disco, but in all of pop music.
The live portion of this set combines Summer classics with unexpected but excellent covers of standards like "The Way We Were," and a medley of "The Man I Love" and "I Got it Bad and That Ain't Good." The studio material includes Summer's theme to THE DEEP, "Deep Down Inside." Unfortunately, the 17-minute "MacArthur Park Suite" has been excised to make the two-album set fit on one CD; that essential track is available on the DANCE COLLECTION anthology.
Principally recorded live at the Universal Amphitheater, Los Angeles, California.
Personnel includes: Donna Summer (vocals); Mike Warren, Peter Woodford (guitar); John Santulis (violin); Dick Spencer (alto saxophone); Don Menza (tenor saxophone); Joe Romano (baritone saxophone); Bobby Shew (trumpet); Bruce Paulson (trombone); Doug Livingston (keyboards); Sal Guglielmi (bass); Keith Forsey, Richard Edelman (drums, percussion).
Rolling Stone - 3 Stars - Good Donna Summer Live And More Songs Live And More Music Review Average Rating: (3.3 out of 5 stars) It's Missing the MacArthur Park Suite I accidently ordered this CD and have to return it because it doesn't contain all the songs of the original Album that I owned back in 1979. What's missing is the original recording called the MacArthur Park Suite... which took up an entire side of the album. So if you're looking for that, you won't find it here. I've found it elsewhere on the "Dance Collection" CD. The other stuff on this album is ok, but then I think the best of Disco is studio mixed (as MacArthur Park was on the original album), and not live versions. The Missing Tracks The MacArthur Park Suite missing from this cd can be found on Donna Summer The Twelve Inch Collection. Which is kind of funny because it's not the real 12" version. The disco single casblanca released was different mix when it went into Heaven Knows. Submitted by Tamlagordy (Chicago Il.) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Do Your Homework To all the reviewers dissappointed that McArthur Park Suite is not included on the CD version of "Live and More", do your homework! A quick look at the track listing would have disclosed the missing massive McArthur Park Suite. This track was not included on the CD version because it would have necessitated a double CD. MacAurthur Park?? I do recall the time in which i purchased this album, dating back two years ago. What promted me eagerly to purchased this album was mainly due to the MacAurthur Park Suite but unfourtuanatley it wasn't inducted into the album. Although i was dissapointed at first with the dismissal of the track, still, all in all, a great album to listen to if you feel like singing along to all the donna classics. Even though donna's studio sound falls completely flat (and evidently it presented on this particular recording), donna manages to overshadow studio sound with her powerfull voice and energy. Purchase Live And More CD To buy, Click on price to add to cart | Donna Summer Bad Girls CD (1979)
Live And More album
$7.49 Largely regarded as Donna Summer's rock & roll album, thanks to some hot guitars mixed in with the synthesizers, 1979's BAD GIRLS mostly sounds like an indication of the way mainstream pop music would sound in the 1980s. It's hard to imagine Michael Jackson's THRILLER, David Bowie's LET'S DANCE or Madonna's LIKE A VIRGIN without this punchy and enormously successful blend of dancefloor heat, rock & roll cool, and smart pop songwriting.
Starting off with the killer one-two punch of "Hot Stuff" and the title track--possibly Summer's two best songs ever--the rest of the ...
