Guitarist/keyboardist Tony MacAlpine really hits his stride on Maximum Security. While it's not all that different from his first album, Edge of Insanity, it's just much better. The album's captivating neoclassical/fusion forays are filled with plenty of beautiful melodies and hair-raising solos; MacAlpine simply lights up the fretboard -- and the keyboard, for that matter. Opening with a stormy harpsichord motif, the album's leadoff track, "Autumn Lords," sounds promising from the start. The piece soars with dramatic classical precision and features some truly breathtaking guitar/keyboard interplay. The album rarely falters from there; the flash guitar workout of "Hundreds of Thousands," which moves at warp speed, gives way to the gorgeous "Tears of Sahara," featuring guest solos by George Lynch. MacAlpine's penchant for dramatic soundscapes gives his pieces a rich, cinematic feel. The variety of textures on this album -- not to mention a wealth of beautiful melodies -- keep it continually interesting. Other highlights include "Porcelain Doll" -- its lilting melody borrowed from Chopin -- and MacAlpine's verbatim recital of Chopin's "Etude #4, Opus #10." Maximum Security is essential listening for anyone interested in instrumental guitar music. ~ Andy Hinds Maximum Security Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Simply his best! This is the album where Tony MacAlpine reached his peak in creativity. He has also created other masterpieces, but this release is one of the best metal guitar albums of all times. Brilliantly played and composed, there is no boring or weak track here. Melodies are amazing, as they suddenly move to unexpected places without loosing any feeling or depth at all. This fast and furious, and at the same time soulful as hell. A must! Go for it, NOW! Submitted by Cartonpiedra (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 1 of 1 found this helpful.

Maximum Security album
$13.49 After Yngwie Malmsteen set the guitar world on fire with his 1984 debut, Rising Force, it was amazing how quickly the clones came out of the woodwork. Within a couple years there were dozens of them, flooding the market with their recorded instrumental extravaganzas. Tony MacAlpine was one of the Yngwie followers, to a certain degree. His debut album, Edge of Insanity, with its all-star rhythm section of Steve Smith and Billy Sheehan (drums and bass, respectively), follows the rough blueprint of Yngwie's model. Soloing over dramatic minor key vamps, MacAlpine catalogs his impressive licks at top speed. But while his chops on the guitar are quite astounding, what is more impressive is that he is equally adept at playing the keyboard. So there's plenty of exciting guitar/keyboard interplay here -- including dueling solo sections and unison or harmonized runs -- that is quite dazzling. Album highlights include the laid-back album closer, "No Place in Time," and MacAlpine's impressive unaccompanied piano performance of Chopin's Prelude 16, Opus 28. The low point is "Quarter to Midnight," a "live solo" that sounds ...

$13.65 Recording information: Prairie Sun Studios, Cotati CA (08/1996).
Who's faster: Yngwie Malmsteen or Vinnie Moore? That was the question back in 1986 when this recording was released. An obvious clone of Malmsteen, Moore burst upon the scene proving that, yes, someone else could play "that fast too." The problem with Mind's Eye and the subsequent genre of shredding that followed was that it became stagnant. Malmsteen turned heads from all musical styles because of his technical proficiency back in the early '80s, but those same heads quickly turned away to find out that there was little more being offered than really ...

| | Jason Becker Perpetual Burn CD (1988)
Maximum Security songs
$14.55 Cacophony guitarist Jason Becker's all-instrumental solo album is a winner. On Perpetual Burn, Becker gets to stretch out and really show his talents, whereas in Cacophony, with fellow virtuoso Marty Friedman sharing the spotlight, some of the subtleties of Becker's style are lost amid the cluttered speed metal maelstrom. Floating in on a bed of ethereal keyboards, Becker's guitar opens the album with a lyrical solo on the stately "Altitudes." His compositional ...
