Odyssey is a more subdued, polished collection seemingly designed for mainstream radio airplay. Vocalist Joe Lynn Turner gives the set a smooth, professional feel, and Yngwie Malmsteen's playing is more mellow, due partly to the fact that he was still recovering from his near-fatal car accident when the album was recorded. However, all of this works to the detriment of the music: the mellowness of Malmsteen's guitar work makes him sound constrained and passionless, and the album shows little difference in approach from his previous output, lending credence to critics' charges that Malmsteen plays with mindless technique at the expense of substance, fire, and emotion. ~ Steve Huey

Blazing solo's, Killer chop's, and technicaly composed. From the openig cut to the final score this album is a must for the guitar player and a must for the music lover. Malmsteen...POP??? I'm a huge Malmsteen fan, but other than his first two releases, I haven't been able to stomach anything else that he has put out. Although, I haven't heard Trilogy yet. He should not do pop!!! Submitted by a reviewer (Toledo, Oh., USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

pretty much great... This album is very good. Yngwie and Joe, what a combination. Now Joe has worked with the two best guitarplayers in the world: Yngwie Malmsteen and Ritchie Blackmore. He should be proud. I'm sure he is, he really shines on this album, he is such a great singer. The rest of the band is also pretty much it... pretty much the ultimate... Have a nice shred! Odyssey album
$14.65 On nearly all counts, the debut from Los Angeles heavy metal quartet Steeler is an unremarkable, even generic release; but what makes the album important is the presence of Swedish guitar virtuoso Yngwie Malmsteen, which marks his official introduction to U.S. audiences. Malmsteen's playing -- which would later gain ...

$13.95 THE RAVENTONES - ODD BIRDS (2003 - Darkwater Music DWM005)Out in the Oregon woods, The Raventones have home-built a solid first album in "Odd Birds". It's a thick but spacious mix of low-tuned guitars, forefront bass, vintage-style drums & intense vocals. Driven by twangy baritone electric guitar on some tracks, alter-tuned acoustic on others, the songs range from the brawny old-school soul attack of "Walk with Me", to the intimacy of "i surrender" and "hush" to the raging slide blues of "Southbound #5". Bandleader TR Kelley's roots are in surf, country and R&B overlaid with ...

When he was between four and five years old, he remembers his dad and the band practicing long and hard every day. All he wanted to do was play in the band. He would sit alone and try to play the guitar, but he discovered the piano suited him better. He never ...
| | University Of North Florida Jazz Ensemble 1 With All My Love CD (2008)
Odyssey CD music
$17.09 LINER NOTES:If you are looking for a college jazz band capable of mastering the demands and nuances associated with performing challenging Latin jazz compositions and arrangements, you need travel no further than Jacksonville, Florida. Under the leadership of JB Scott, the University of North Florida Jazz Ensemble 1 exudes the kind of finesse, power, rhythmic precision, virtuosity and passion one expects and demands from professional musicians. On the stage and in the studio, the commitment to excellence demonstrated by the UNF band resulted in one of the finest realizations of my music to date. The idea for this recording was spawned over a two year period after performances with the band at their Great American Jazz Series and the Jacksonville Jazz festival. Listening to the ensemble perform their selections prior to joining them on the stage, the musicality and originality displayed by JB and the students inspired the idea to record and celebrate the group's talented dedication to jazz. For an experienced record producer, the mix of top soloists engaged with a stellar rhythm section, led by spectacular drumming by John Lumpkin, and supported by a fine tuned, powerful and cohesive wind section, suggests opportunities to create a high quality recording. Additionally, their ability to masterfully perform these selections in a live setting facilitates a live studio recording designed to capture the raw energy and interaction often difficult to create in overdubbed recordings. I want to thank the University of North Florida music department, professor Scott, engineer Javier Carrion, and the students for the opportunity to make music with one of the premier college bands anywhere in the world. Throughout the recording these students performed a wide range of styles, including Latin jazz, with energy, precision, and a deep respect for the stylistic demands of the genre. At a time when many overseeing education want proof that students are learning, UNF should feel proud of the learning demonstrated and fostered by its jazz students and faculty respectfully. From this fellow musician and UNF fan, Thank you all for your kind attention, dedication, and talent. I am flattered and humbled by your efforts. You are the future of an artform many of us love and respect enough to dedicate our lives to its study. As the listeners will surely hear, the future of jazz is in the hearts, minds, and hands of most capable souls.
