This 2 disc set contains a 10 page booklet, historical annotations and photographs. Also contains live versions of "What You're Doing" and "A Passage To Bangkok," both appearing on CD for the first time.
Released in 1990, the two-CD set CHRONICLES was the first "best of" compilation from Rush, spanning their recording career from 1974's self-titled debut until 1990's PRESTO. Although the RETROSPECTIVE VOL.1 & 2 discs from 1997 contained a lengthier and slightly different track listing (and boasted better sound due to remastering), CHRONICLES is still a superb collection of Rush's hits. Rush is primarily known as a progressive band with a leaning towards science fiction themes, but many forget that their roots lay in the bluesy riff-rock of Led Zeppelin and Cream. Look no further than the early cuts "Finding My Way," "Working Man," and a live take of "What You're Doing" for the proof.
Drummer/lyricist Neil Peart replaced original member John Rutsey after the debut RUSH, and the band immediately shifted direction, developing their trademark sound, with an emphasis on more technically and lyrically challenging material. Some of the finest hard rock ever recorded can be found on CHRONICLES--"Closer To The Heart," "Tom Sawyer," "The Spirit Of Radio," "New World Man," "A Passage To Bangkok (live)," and "Distant Early Warning," to name a few. There's simply not a weak track included on CHRONICLES, which makes it a fine collection of Rush classics.

Great Selection! This is a excellent selection, It covers some of everything from "Rush" to "Presto". Along with excellent liner notes this will give you and idea of how Rush began and developed over the years. When you listen to the music Geddy Lee's voice are unmistakable, Alex Leifson and Niel Pert make the music unmistakeably Rush with the fast fretting, great drums and of course Geddy Lee's bass and keyboards. Lyrics are also remarkable as well with the pre-apocalypse "Distant Early Warning", and the Maples cry for equality in "The Trees", If you are not a "Rush" fan this will get you hooked, If you are a "Rush" fan this selection will compliment your music library. Only one track missing If you only buy one rush album, make it this one. The only track missing is Witch Hunt, but mental (yet controlled)drumming can also be found on other tracks. Submitted by penguin_4_2 (Worcester, GB) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo 1 of 2 found this helpful.
Better than The Spirit of Radio compilation This 2-CD best of contains all 16 songs from The Spirit of Radio, a 1-CD compilation by Rush. It then has 12 more songs that are just as good. The one negative to this album is that, whenever I play this on my computer, it tends to have some sort of skipping glitch on the last 2 songs on the 2nd disc. Something I find odd is that the small text on the CDs and case is in Spanish, yet the booklet inside is all in English. Submitted by CD_Music_Freak (Earth) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo
Great overview of Rush's Mercury years This 2 CD compilation is a great overview of Rush's years with Mercury. You get lots of classics from that era ("Working Man", "Closer To The Heart", "The Spirit Of Radio", "Tom Sawyer", "Subdivisions") and many more. And, it covers live material as well, Also, there's one song from Rush's current label, Atlantic ("Show Don't Tell.") However, since this was released in 1990, there's no coverage from the CDs released after that. Oh well, you can always make your own personal "Disk 3" from MP3s like I did.
