Shriekback managed to (somewhat) break out of the confines of the "underground" through the pitchblack plasma brews and cantilevered rhythms of OIL AND GOLD. Opening their sound beyond the sinister brittle funk and experimental electronic exercises of CARE and JAM SCIENCE, OIL AND GOLD vacillates between being a lumbering, multi-headed beast (the angular funk-rock of "Malaria," the circuit-driven stampede of "Nemesis") and a glimpse into the tiny creatures inhabiting the underbrush in the stereo field ("Faded Flowers," the ghostly "This Big Hush," the deep-space cadences of "Only Thing that Shines").
The backbone of Shriekback has always been Barry Andrews; the broad range of synthetics and various sundry devices he uses to flesh out the band's naked animal consistently fascinates. (Instrumentation labeled "jp8 hoover of Christ" and "deadly ratmorse" only serve to heighten the imagistic nature of the sounds they actually create.) This is not to minimize the equal contributions of guitarist Dave Allen, bassist Carl Marsh and rhythm maven Martyn Barker, who collectively bring Shriekback's galvanizing rock-forms to life.

CMJ (1/5/04, p.16) - Ranked #18 in CMJ's "Top 20 Most-Played Albums of 1985" Record Collector (magazine) (p.98) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "OIL & GOLD is the pivotal, mid-career opus that draws together all of this maverick band's strengths with a mesmerising punch."
sublime, elegant, god-like Shreikback transcends dance/pop music with this seminal album, not only for the band, but for the era. If David Cronenberg were a gay bar, this is the music that would play in him. Hitting the ground running with "Malaria", every uptempo number including their 'hit' Nemesis is a neck breaking swirl of rock and roll with dance and funk sensabilities, and lyrical images invoking gods and mosters, sure to curdle the blood of any evangelical preacher. In the moments when the band slows down, "Faded Flowers" "This Big Hush", they infect the head with a lush cascade of sound that is at once oddly romantic, yet overtly creepy. Buy this album. It is a must have for anyone with a taste for funky riffs and bent toward the macabre. Submitted by Todd M (Indianapolis, IN) Was This Review Helpful? YesNo 2 of 3 found this helpful.
