Issued in 1971, Gentle Giant's second album, ACQUIRING THE TASTE, finds the British prog-rock band honing its signature sound under the guidance of producer Tony Visconti (who would later collaborate with David Bowie on some of his finest records). While the ensemble justifiably garnered comparisons to contemporaries such as Yes and King Crimson, Gentle Giant often proved to be more whimsical than those acts, as revealed on the lilting "Pantagruel's Nativity," which is lined with medieval flourishes, and the bouncy title track. Though the group would become a bit more popular with a relatively straightforward sound, this outing showcases Gentle Giant in a wildly inventive and playful mode.Q (5/97, p.138) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...the music had gone barmy: hard rock, string quartets and avant-gardist tendencies pulling the music into unrecognisable but wonderful shapes..." Excellent! GG's second album, "Acquiring the taste", shows that GG really begin to find their sound. As much of the other albums, it shows higly creative arrangements and perfect playing from the band! Unforenately, the are some weaker moments on the album, but not many! Anyway, Highly recommended! 4 1/2 stars. Submitted by Bj-1 (Norway) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Acquiring The Taste
$6.79 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also a lovely rendition of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" that's topped only by Ron Wood's reappearance on a finale of the Stones' "Ruby Tuesday." VH1 PRESENTS THE CORRS LIVE IN DUBLIN is a fine mix of the band's greatest ...

| | Gentle Giant Free Hand CD (1975) Anniversary Edition; 35th Anniversary Edition
Acquiring The Taste
$10.69 The follow-up to 1974's surprisingly well-received THE POWER & THE GLORY, Gentle Giant's FREE HAND marks the pinnacle of the British prog-rock group's international success. (Like its predecessor, it appeared on the U.S. charts.) While the band's eccentricities--complex song structures, strange vocal harmonies--are present, these tunes are framed in a slightly more pop-conscious way, as on the funky, elastic title track. ...

Acquiring The Taste
$11.19 One of Gentle Giant's most successful albums, 1974's THE POWER & THE GLORY managed to sneak briefly into the U.S. charts, an unusual feat for the lauded, but never terribly popular, U.K. prog-rock band. Though the record is considered "accessible" by Gentle Giant standards, it is filled with the group's trademark break-neck ...

| | Miles Davis In Person Friday Nights At The Blackhawk S.F. V.1 CD (1961) Japan; Limited Edition; Remastered; Mini LP Sleeve
Acquiring The Taste
$27.95 Recorded live at the Blackhawk, San Francisco, California on April 22, 1961. Originally released on Columbia (8470). Includes liner notes by Ralph J. Gleason.
The remastered Japanese special-edition release features a vinyl-inspired design.
Miles Davis' first live presentation of his working band took place at the noted San Francisco nightclub, the ambience of which may best be summed up by the proud words of its owner, Guido Caccienti: "I've worked and slaved for years to keep this place a sewer."
"Walkin'" is taken at the kind of jaunty tempo that distinguished the Wynton Kelly-Paul Chambers-Jimmy Cobb rhythm axis. Paul Chambers' buoyant, effortless beat, his sure sense of harmony and swing, and his resounding brand of melodic bass (dig his little bowed break at the conclusion of "Walkin'") are the glue which hold these performances together. On "Walkin'" he and Jimmy Cobb lock up the groove as if swinging were the same as breathing, allowing Kelly to engage the trumpeter in a continual dialogue, feinting counterpoint and feeding him his favorite chords, then dropping away to allow Miles to stroll for a taste.
Kelly's joy is infectious on the band's old warhorse "Bye Bye Blackbird" and the easy-going ballad "All Of You," where he seems to particularly inspire a laid back bluesy Hank Mobley tenor solo. Mobley, never a Davis favorite, is not the fiery foil he relished, but his buttery tone and imperturbable lyric charm suit the slightly conservative tone of these performances. But in a long reading of "No Blues," Miles pointedly has Wynton Kelly testify briefly in response to his own, almost down home reading of a blues, before engaging Cobb in some talking rhythm exchanges. However, Kelly is capable of a gorgeous ...
