Excellent!
GG's second album, "Acquiring the taste", shows that GG really begin to find their sound. As much of the other albums, it shows higly creative arrangements and perfect playing from the band! Unforenately, the are some weaker moments on the album, but not many! Anyway, Highly recommended! 4 1/2 stars.

Big improvement but not the original master
Here's an overview of this release for those quality-conscious GG fans who wonder, as I often do, just how much of a sonic upgrade is on offer compared to previous releases. Well, those who have acquired the taste can sound their trumpets, because this Universal/Vertigo Japan reissue stomps flat the muddy-sounding Mercury release from 1990 - the only "official" release until now except for the tracks included on the "Edge of Twilight" collection. Right from the opening bars of "Pantagruel's Nativity", you'll notice the full, round bass and clear highs (by this album's standards, anyway). The remastering is nice & "warm" with plenty of "punch." The power of the music really comes through. For example, I played "The House, The Street, The Room" for a friend last night. He'd heard the original version on CD and loved it, but judging by the astonished look on his face, it's true fury had just been unleashed upon his ears for the first time! He was blown away and claimed to have heard things he never heard before. The mandolin (or whatever is played during the "here, awake in sleep together" section) sounded like it was right there in the room with us. The sonic imaging throughout the album is generally very good.
This release contains one major flaw - it's not made from the original master tapes. How do I know? Because the title song, Acquiring The Taste, features the bad start-up found on the original American LP, which, as hard-core GG fans will already know, was not on the original UK LP. Frankly, I couldn't believe my ears when I heard it. My heart sank! The correct version was used for the Mercury reissue, so one wonders why not this time. Oh, well...
Still, this reissue is a big improvement over what was previously available. For myself, I've also ordered the German reissue released last month by Repertoire, in hopes that they've used the correct title track. I'll post a separate review of that album when received.
