Issued in 1971, Gentle Giant's second album, ACQUIRING THE TASTE, finds the British prog-rock band honing its signature sound under the guidance of producer Tony Visconti (who would later collaborate with David Bowie on some of his finest records). ... Full DescriptionWhile the ensemble justifiably garnered comparisons to contemporaries such as Yes and King Crimson, Gentle Giant often proved to be more whimsical than those acts, as revealed on the lilting "Pantagruel's Nativity," which is lined with medieval flourishes, and the bouncy title track. Though the group would become a bit more popular with a relatively straightforward sound, this outing showcases Gentle Giant in a wildly inventive and playful mode.Q (5/97, p.138) - 3 Stars (out of 5) - "...the music had gone barmy: hard rock, string quartets and avant-gardist tendencies pulling the music into unrecognisable but wonderful shapes..." Excellent! GG's second album, "Acquiring the taste", shows that GG really begin to find their sound. As much of the other albums, it shows higly creative arrangements and perfect playing from the band! Unforenately, the are some weaker moments on the album, but not many! Anyway, Highly recommended! 4 1/2 stars. Submitted by Bj-1 (Norway) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 0 of 1 found this helpful.

| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Acquiring The Taste CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also a lovely rendition of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" that's topped only by Ron Wood's reappearance ...
| | Wishbone Ash Argus CD (1972) Bonus Tracks; Remastered; Expanded Edition
Acquiring The Taste music CDs
$6.39 On its third album, Wishbone Ash doesn't mess with its formula--as before, this long running British rock institution purveys a mix of blues, folk, and Yes- style riffs mated to endearingly cosmic lyrics. The songs here, however, are considerably more focused and well crafted than on the band's previous efforts, and the harmony singing is delightful.
As always, the band's basis is the tag team guitars of Andy Powell and Ted Turner. Fans of this duo's mix of Yardbirds- and Allman Brothers- style harmony licks and dueling solos will find much to admire here, particularly "The King Will Come" and "Time Was," a folk-ish ...

| | Porcupine Tree Deadwing CD (2005)
Acquiring The Taste album
$9.99 Considering their cinematic scope, it's fitting that the songs on DEADWING were actually inspired by a film script written by Porcupine Tree mastermind Steven Wilson. Not that this should come as any surprise to longtime fans who know the UK act's reputation for churning out epic progressive rock so sonically descriptive that it's practically visual.
Porcupine Tree creates works with complex structures that do not alienate or obscure the songs themselves, pieces that are dark and psychedelic without being sinister. On the 12-minute opening title track, weighty guitar riffs and spacious synths immediately recall Nine Inch Nails, but swooping melodic changes give way to ambient passages, making it plain that this is ...

$27.95 Recorded live at the Blackhawk, San Francisco, California on April 22, 1961. Originally released on Columbia (8470). Includes liner notes by Ralph J. Gleason.
The remastered Japanese special-edition release features a vinyl-inspired design.
Miles Davis' first live presentation of his working band took place at the noted San Francisco nightclub, the ambience of which may best be summed up by the proud words of its owner, Guido Caccienti: "I've worked and slaved for years to keep this place a sewer."
"Walkin'" is taken at the kind of jaunty tempo that distinguished the Wynton Kelly-Paul Chambers-Jimmy Cobb rhythm axis. Paul Chambers' buoyant, effortless beat, his sure sense of harmony and swing, and his resounding brand of melodic bass (dig his little bowed break at the conclusion of "Walkin'") are the glue which hold these performances together. On "Walkin'" he and Jimmy Cobb lock up the groove as if swinging were the same as breathing, allowing Kelly to engage the trumpeter in a continual dialogue, feinting counterpoint and feeding him his favorite chords, then dropping away to allow Miles to stroll for a taste.
Kelly's joy is infectious on the band's old warhorse "Bye Bye Blackbird" and the easy-going ballad "All Of You," where he seems to particularly inspire a laid back bluesy Hank Mobley tenor solo. Mobley, never a Davis favorite, is not the fiery foil he relished, but his buttery tone and imperturbable lyric charm suit the slightly conservative tone of these performances. But ...
