Holst: The Planets
$6.49 On AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY, the follow-up to their megahit PURPLE RAIN, Prince and the Revolution add a generous helping of psychedelia to their style, enlisting Prince's father along the way to co-write several songs, including the title track. Many critics at the time dismissed AROUND THE WORLD IN A DAY as a turkey follow-up to the outstanding PURPLE RAIN. However, the achingly beautiful ballad "Condition of the Heart," and the stunning "The Ladder," as well as the pop classic "Raspberry Beret," could easily sit beside the band's best material. Ballads and pop gems aside, Prince is as cocky and as sexually self-assured as ever on AROUND THE WORLD. When he vamps and winks his way through "Temptation," the epic album-closer, he moans "everybody on this earth has got a vice and mine, little darlin', is the opposite of ice."
Prince & The Revolution: Prince (vocals, guitar, keyboards, percussion); Wendy Melvoin (vocals, guitar); Lisa Coleman, Dr. Fink ...

Alternative is a double-disc set of The Pet Shop Boys' B-sides. Far from being a superfluous collection, the album contains a wealth of prime material, including several tracks that surpass those the duo put on their albums. Consequently, the set is worthwhile not only for hardcore fans, but for listeners with a passing interest in the group. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

Holst: The Planets
$11.79 Carl Stephenson, the co-conspirator with Beck on that artist's MELLOW GOLD album, is heard on this set of intelligent pop in his Forest For The Trees incarnation.
A sympathizer might call Forest for the Trees a psychedelic album, but a detractor would probably resort to the term "total mess." Forest for the Trees tries to be everything at once and ends up being nothing at all, pleasing only those who favor "interesting in theory" collage-oriented music over some semblance of catchy songs. In this album, he mixes harmonica, drum machine beats, "heavy metal" guitar, bagpipes, female backup singers, and raps into one big stew. Sure, Stephenson tries to turn Forest for the Trees into a wild party, but instead he has constructed a panel discussion full of hip in-jokes and goofy concepts that fall flat. ~ Kembrew McLeod
1997 release, unavailable domestically. Forest for the Trees is the brainchild of Carl Stephenson, the co-writer/producer of Beck's ''Loser'' single, as well as much of Beck's DGC full-length debut, Mellow Gold. Dreamworks.
Personnel: Carl Stephenson (vocals, guitar, sitar, violin, keyboards, bass, percussion, programming); Mark Schultz (vocals, guitar, percussion); Squeaky G (vocals, bass); Kevin Krakower (rap vocals); Jaspr Baj ...

$194.25 (7-CD box set with hardcover book) Rod McKuen's complete 1960s RCA Victor recordings are compiled in a lavish boxed set of 7 compact discs. Rod McKuen's books of poetry have been published in eleven languages, sold 65 million copies, and placed him secur
With ears firmly on the pulse of the collector and hardcore enthusiast, the German-based Bear Family Records has gathered seven CDs worth of material from lyricist, vocalist and spoken word artist Rod McKuen's mid- to late-'60s stint on RCA Records. The albums covered on If You Go Away: The RCA Years 1965 -- 1970 (2007) are Rod McKuen Sings His Own (1965), The Loner (1966), Other Kids of Songs (1966), Through European Windows (1967), Listen to the Warm (1967), and The Single Man (1968) -- all of which had largely been out of print in North America for decades at the time of this box set's release. However that is a mere fraction of the contents as there is an overwhelming 111 -- of the 195 selections -- that have never been available before. That category would include a host of McKuen's demos -- that were meant not only for himself but for other artists -- alternate takes and unissued songs. The package likewise draws upon duets and other similar associations with McKuen's contemporaries Glenn Yarbrough, Don Ho, Anita Kerr, Chet Atkins, Henry Mancini, and Nelson Riddle, many of whom were also on RCA Records' roster. After a variety of careers that embodied the American spirit -- ranging from lumberjack and ranch hand to rodeo cowboy and even Beat poet, McKuen had already become a luminous figure ...

Holst: The Planets
$15.05 This selection is a Hybrid Super Audio CD. The Stereo Hybrid SACD program can be played on any standard compact disc player. The DSD Stereo program requires an SACD player for playback.
With renewed interest in the Argentinean tango, many recordings are cropping up in the 1990s. Among them is 'TANGO - ELEGíA DE QUIENES YA NO SON,' which features an unusual combination of performers: traditional tango musicians, a German conductor, and a Flemish orchestra. Rudolf Werthen, who leads the Orchestra of Flanders, conducts this disc, which contains the music of the late, great Astor Piazzolla. In addition, virtuoso bandoneon artist Juan Jose Mosalini, along with other guest performers, adds a special touch to an already excellent recording.
This CD boasts a wide assortment of material, the strongest being the instrumental tracks. Although the vocal works, such as 'A Homero,' dedicated to famed tango lyricist Homero Manzione, are touching and performed with heartfelt abandon, it is the non-vocal selections that prevail. The luxurious 'Tanguedia' starts the CD off with a bang, and Mosalini's expert musicianship accentuates the rhythms and movements of this great work. 'Preludio no 9' is another example of Piazzolla's compositional genius, with Mosalini, pianist Osvaldo ...
