| | Hayley Westenra Winter Magic CD (2009)
Debussy: Preludes, Vol. 1 / L'Isle Joyeux
$13.10 A magical collection of Christmas songs from the 22 year old singing phenomenon that is Hayley Westenra. Winter Magic combines some of the best loved and most familiar seasonal carols such as 'Silent Night' and 'Coventry Carol' with popular Christmas songs 'Little Drummer Boy' and 'Sleigh Ride', as well as tracks Hayley has written herself ( Peace Shall Come, All With You and Christmas Morning). The variety of the song choices perfectly showcases the versatility of Hayley's angelic voice and her ability to not only perform in a beautiful, classical way (Corpus Christi Carol) but also in a considerably more 'pop' style (Peace Shall Come). Hayley released her first album 'Pure' at the age of 16 and it was soon on the way to becoming the fastest-selling debut album from a classical artist, and reached the Top 10 of the pop charts in 11 countries. Her albums have sold more than four million copies worldwide to date. 'Pure' was certified by the official UK chart compilers as the best selling classical album of the 21st Century. True to form, Hayley has once ...

| | Pops Christmas Party / Arthur Fiedler, Boston Pops Orchestra CD (1959)
Debussy: Preludes, Vol. 1 / L'Isle Joyeux
$7.99 When it originally appeared in 1959, this LP was regarded as one of the sonic gems in the RCA Victor "Living Stereo" library, a demonstration-quality stereo record that was also chock-full of supremely enjoyable music, from Leroy Anderson to Tchaikovsky. And original "Shaded Dog" label copies (referring to the early masterings/pressings, and the image of "Nipper" the dog on the label) in mint condition are still highly prized by audiophiles 50 years later. The repertory here, a mix of light orchestral holiday standards, arrangements of popular Christmas songs, and some excerpts from more ambitious classical works (especially The Nutcracker), was ideal for Arthur Fiedler and the Boston Pops, and they ran with it -- Anderson's "Sleigh Ride" is the most famous recording here, a classic that is almost as ubiquitous during the Christmas season as Bing Crosby's recording of "White Christmas." But there's a lot else to love on this album, including "A Christmas Festival," Anderson's arrangement of familiar songs and carols ("Joy to the World" etc.) as an orchestral fantasia, plus "White Christmas" and "Winter Wonderland." Some of the material may seem to go far afield, but it's ...

Debussy: Preludes, Vol. 1 / L'Isle Joyeux
$17.09 Knowing how to strike while the iron is hot, the international all-male pop-opera revue Il Divo, assembled by AMERICAN IDOL's Simon Cowell, followed up its 2005 debut (and subsequent Christmas album) with yet another outing in early 2006. Here the dashing vocal quartet--Urs Buhler (Switzerland), Sebastien Izambard (France), Carlos Marin (Spain), and David Miller (U.S.)--stays true to its multi-lingual repertoire, offering up a suitably dramatic Spanish version of Eric Carmen's "All By Myself" ("Solo Otra Vez") and an English/French rendition of "I Believe in You" (with Celine Dion), among other numbers. While the arrangements on ANCORA are lush and majestic, they never overshadow the full, passionate voices of the foursome, who have clearly become used to working together as a powerful group.
2005 studio album that reflects the multi-national character of the group; the songs are not all sung in English, but drift between Spanish, English and Italian. However they are worded, all use the emotional Esperanto of love. The group's debut album, IL Divo hit the #1 slot on both Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble.com after a breakout career-defining appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" (April 5, 2005) where the quartet performed its interpretation of Toni Braxton's `Unbreak My Heart (`Regressa A Mi'). Highlights on Ancora include 'Isabel' a duet with Celine Dion and IL Divo's cover of Mariah Carey's 'Hero'. Two of the tracks ...
