| | Lake Of Tears Headstones CD Lake Of Tears Discography of CDs
Abandoning their doom and death metal affectations almost completely (and appropriately, for that matter), Lake of Tears take a more traditional metal approach on "Headstones." Released on Black Mark just a year after their debut for the label, this sophomore outing is a noticeable improvement upon Greater Art. The songwriting and recording is tighter, and in what would become a long-term trend for the group, the guttural chants of their prior release are refined, as more melodic vocals are used to create greater emphasis on repeating memorable choruses. This traditional, almost Metallica-like vocal delivery combined with more aggressive guitar work is an improvement for Lake of Tears. "Dreamdemons" is perhaps the best song on Headstones, but the material is pretty consistent throughout the recording. Far from being a must-have '90s metal offering, Headstones is a decent release from a group experiencing a much-needed musical evolution. ~ Vincent Jeffries

Headstones album
$12.89 Words cannot do this album enough justice. This is a truly glorious metal release, certainly Death's finest hour, and easily one of the top metal albums of all time. The sheer ferocity and emotion that channels through each of the intricate, progressive guitar melodies shatters every low opinion of the American metal scene. When you combine Chuck Schuldiner's shrieking vocals (his eeriest performance ever) with the most talented, cohesive lineup yet, you get the definitive Death album. This album delicately mixes the best aspects of past albums Human, Individual Thought Patterns, and Symbolic and takes them one step further. The album is more aggressive, more progressive, and certainly more melodic. Therefore, when opener "Scavenger of Human Sorrow" kicks off, the complexity of the music suffocates the listener, allowing him no room to breathe. Even the instrumental piece, "Voice of the Soul," requires the listener's full attention so that he can grasp the raw emotion carefully woven within. No "true" metal listener can ignore the fact that Death have carefully crafted the perfect album for the metal world, an album which draws from the creative pool of Atheist, Dream Theater, and Cynic yet remains pure unadulterated Death. The ungodly solos and leads that swim within "Story to Tell" and "Spiritcrusher" (which contains one of the most ...

Headstones CD music
$14.45 The pretense of this group's name and their debut record's title are generally in keeping with the tenets of '90s Euro-metal. Dominated by the many Scandinavian derivations of death, black, goth, and power metal, the movement was as strong as ever when Lake of Tears tossed this disc into the overcrowded metal marketplace. While there were a few decent notices, not much was made of this recording, and for good reason. The guitar work is especially ...
| | Lacrimas Profundere Burning: A Wish CD (2001)
Headstones music CDs
$13.85 Germany's expansive Lacrimas Profundere have spilled forth an atmospheric, melancholic splattering of dark colors to the painted frame of metal. Staying true to their North European doom roots (à la early Theatre of Tragedy), the sextet has entered into the progressive doorways of gloom, currently transversed by the likes of Anathema, Katatonia, Entwine, and scant few others worth mentioning. Clearly, though, it is the aforementioned British dark rockers, Anathema, that Lacrimas have endeared themselves to, almost religiously, as each song is almost a reminiscent cavalcade of previous Anathema recordings. Especially prevalent are the Vincent Cavanaugh-esque vocals of Christopher Schmid, which permeate strikingly in the heart of each track, showcasing an impressive palette for such a young crooner. Whether it is the "Silent Enigma" rasps heard on "Solicitude, Silence" -- complete with the doom-laden musical craftsmanship "Silent Enigma" is notorious for -- or the desperately downtrodden Vincent Cavanaugh-meets-Aaron Stainthorpe-from-My Dying Bride tone of "A Summer's End," Anathema's influence is abundant. Add a touch of ethereal female vocals to accentuate the psychedelic doom tones, ...
| | Lake Of Tears Neonai CD (2003)
Headstones songs
$14.45 Lake of Tears' fifth album, The Neonai, is also set to be their last, with singer/guitarist Daniel Brennare announcing that he will be moving in a different direction, possibly with a new project also named Neonai. And what a pity too, since many would argue that the band was still in its prime. Considering this is the end of the line makes Lake of Tears' trajectory all the more interesting to look back on -- especially since their drastic evolution from depressive doom metal to spacy, post-Pink Floyd goth rock took place without compromising the quality of their music, something other respectable bands like Paradise Lost and Tiamat have failed miserably at. Brought home by the album's fantastical, psychedelic artwork (a bright, colorful, mirror-opposite of the dark collages often used by Cathedral), the truth is that there's little left in Lake of Tears' sound that even resembles heavy metal. Sure, the guitars are usually heavy in tone, but were it not for the group's general propensity for complex, often minor-chord-based songwriting, cuts like "The Shadowshires" and "Solitude" could very well pass for straight-up rock & roll. Even further away from metal, the quasi-ballad "Leave a Room" and the dreamy "Sorcerers" (containing flute-like synthesizers and rampant psychedelics) take full advantage of guest vocalist Jennie Tebler, while the pop-tastic "Nathalie and the ...
| | Iced Earth Glorious Burden CDs (2004) Limited Edition
Headstones album
$19.89 After much debate and a labored attempt at completing his contributions to a new studio offering, a disenchanted Matt Barlow chose to step down as vocalist of power-metal veterans Iced Earth. Enter Tim "Ripper" Owens, who was eagerly awaiting a formal announcement that metal god Rob Halford had rejoined his then-band, Judas Priest. Anticipating the obvious (and long-rumored inevitable), Owens weighed a number of offers before joining forces with Iced Earth. He quickly helped them finish their recording, and enthusiastically joined their ranks.
Principal writer, guitarist, and noted history buff Jon Schaffer has crafted a classic metal album that is sure to stand apart from the nu-metal din. THE GLORIOUS BURDEN focuses on conflicts and tragedies inspired by documented world events, steering away from the fantasy concepts ...
