BAILE DE LOS LOCOS, the second Epitaph release from ska-punk veterans the Voodoo Glow Skulls, is one of the band's most focused expressions of its funky, horn-and-guitar-fueled musical stew. The sound suggests the Mighty Mighty Bosstones grafted over a wall of more aggressive solid-state guitar reminiscent of such West Coast brethren as Suicidal Tendencies. But for all the roiling guitars and churning drums on BAILE DE LOS LOCOS, the concentration of infectious horn hooks maintains an upbeat, innocuous party-like vibe.
BAILE DE LOS LOCOS sports such adolescent-sounding titles as "Freeballin'" and "Elephantitis." Three of the songs are sung in Spanish, and there's even a cover of "Feliz Navidad." Frank Casillas growls his vocals throughout. On "The Kids Will Have to Play," he proudly proclaims that "we've been this way since 1988." And BAILE DE LOS LOCOS proves that the party isn't about to end anytime soon for the Voodoo Glow Skulls.
Recorded at Paramount Studios, Hollywood, California.
Voodoo Glow Skulls: Frank (vocals); Eddie (guitar, background vocals); Jorge (bass, background vocals); Joey (saxophone); Joe (trumpet); Brodie (trombone); Jerry "Strombo" (drums, percussion).
Additional Personnel: Dave Mello (clarinet); Jim Goodwin (Mellotron, organ, walkie talkie).

Baile De Los Locos album
$8.49 In the late '70s and early '80s, punk rock fell into two main categories: angry sociopolitical agitators (the Dead Kennedys, the Clash, T.S.O.L.) and more escapist bands like the Ramones, the Dickies, and the Damned. The Suicide Machines essentially fall into the latter category. Recalling punk's glory years but sometimes adding touches of ska and reggae, Destruction by Definition is an CD characterized by its infectiousness and reckless sense of fun more than anything. While some sociopolitical observations can be heard on "SOS" and "No Face," it's clear that the Machines' main ...
| | Rancid ...And Out Come The Wolves CD (1995)
Baile De Los Locos CD music
$10.45 There's a saying that there can never be too much of a good thing, and Rancid could've coined the phrase. Their irresistible old-school punk and their ska-in-the-garage guitar sound are sure to please anyone who thought the Clash were the best that '70s punk had to offer.
Yet, considering their loyalty to the original punk aesthetic, Rancid sound surprisingly fresh. ...AND OUT COME THE WOLVES proves the band knows their fans and can still live by their causes. They're self-proclaimed "Roots Radicals," but this is a '90s band. "Lock, Stop, And Gone" is crammed with details of modern L.A., where there's "a fire on the corner and it's never gonna stop" and where "the killer in the neighborhood never got caught." There's also bewilderment at the fact that the punk that was sure to keep them on the fringes is a high-profile career now--"too much attention unavoidably destroyed us," they claim on "Journey To The End Of East Bay."
Throughout ...AND OUT COME THE WOLVES, Rancid keep their edge. They won't succumb to rehashing punk, instead giving it new life through their uncompromising songs. With so many '90s ...

Baile De Los Locos music CDs
$10.55 All songs written by Voodoo Glow Skulls except "Charlie Brown" (traditional).
Released in both English and Spanish versions, Voodoo Glow Skulls' 1995 effort may have been one of the high points in popularity for the seven-member ska-punk outfit. Unlike some more laid-back performers in the genre, and coming from a time before the style was commercially successful, Voodoo Glow Skulls are a bit more heavy-handed on the punk part of the mix, resulting in consistently fast-paced and chugging song structures that occasionally erupt into triumphant horn breakdowns and chanted group vocals. The group's ska stylings very nearly save the day a number of times. A cover of the traditional "Charlie Brown" and a few Spanish numbers come off pretty ...
| | Voodoo Glow Skulls Band Geek Mafia CD (1998)
Baile De Los Locos songs
$10.49 Band Geek Mafia finds Voodoo Glow Skulls somewhat coming into their own, developing a cross between ska and punk that isn't quite ska-punk but has many of its same attributes. It's energetic, punchy, and irreverent -- and all of these are both blessings and curses, depending on your point of view. If you don't have a silly sense of humor, the record could get on your nerves, which might mean that you won't notice the fact that Voodoo Glow Skulls are musically more astute than many of their peers. They have a pretty sharp sense of melody and can blend the horns with the punk guitars with more dexterity than most. They do have problems with writing a consistent batch of songs, but the high points are proof that the group is coming into its own. And it's nice to see that they have the good taste to cover "Stranded in the Jungle." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Bob Marley Songs Of Freedom CDs (1992) Box Set
Baile De Los Locos CD music
$38.49 Includes liner notes by Rob Partridge, Rita Marley, Derrick Morgan, John "Rabbit" Bundrick and Timothy White.
During his all-too brief life, Bob Marley established himself as one of the giants of modern music; he stands on par with the likes of Miles Davis and Bob Dylan, performers who took established musical forms and revolutionized them, who continually evolved their vision throughout their careers. From his first single, the bouncy "Judge Not," through a loose, live rendition of the haunting "Redemption Song" performed at his last stage appearance, SONGS OF FREEDOM documents Bob Marley's musical legacy better than any previous compilation, and probably, better than any likely to come.
Marley was at his peak at the time of his death in 1981, meaning there is no filler or weak material here, only four solid discs of great songs. His philosophical evolution is easily seen: listen to a rude-boy anthem, like the early hit "Simmer Down," next to a later exploration of Rastafarianism, such as "Crazy Baldheads," and eventual statements of pan-Africanism in songs like "Zimbabwe" and "Africa Unite." Musically, Marley's music expanded just as far. He utilizes Stylistics-like harmonies on "High Tide Or Low Tide," incorporates early-80's R&B into the sound of "Could You Be Loved," and even throws a basic blues shuffle into the alternate mix of "Three Little Birds."
SONGS OF FREEDOM is exhaustive and beautifully packaged. It is loaded with previously unreleased material, songs from the Ska years, the late-60's Lee Perry productions, and all of the highlights of the Island years. ...

| | Mods Mayday '79 CD (1997)
Baile De Los Locos songs
$17.79 MODS MAYDAY 79 features 30 songs on two CDs from the heyday of the Mod resurgence including "I'm Not Free (But I'm Cheap)" and "It's A Mod Mod World."
Since the British music market was flooded with mod-revivalists in the late '70s, the only effective way to promote the bands was through package tours -- several like-minded (and like-sounding) bands playing short sets on the same night. Mods Mayday '79 is a classic collection which compiles the highlights of one of these tours. Most of the second wave revivalists -- bands who received their inspiration directly from the Jam's early albums -- are represented: Secret Affair, Beggar, Small Hours, the Mods, Squire, and the Merton Parkas. The one glaring omission is the Lambrettas, who where unable to attend the tour due to contractual obligations. Nevertheless, this provides the best look at the genre and is the only place to hear some of the bands who, despite their ...
