| | Johnnie Taylor In Control CD Johnnie Taylor Discography of CDs
In the 1960s and early to mid-'70s, Johnnie Taylor was omnipresent on Black radio. But in the '80s and '90s, it all but ignored him -- the reason being his refusal to embrace high-tech "urban contemporary" sounds. Taylor has continued to excel by sticking with the type of unapologetically gospel-influenced soul music he's always done. Crazy Bout You may have been recorded in 1988, but this treasure sounds like it could have been recorded 15 years earlier. Indeed, unpretentious and straightforward offerings like "It Don't Hurt Me Like It Used To," "Let's Get Closer" and the funky title song aren't significantly different from his early to mid-'70s Stax output (which was smoother and sleeker than his '60s work for that label). A cover of Wilson Pickett's "I Found A Love," however, is more '60s-like. Taylor has been one of Malaco's best-selling artists, and In Control points to the fact that he's also one of its most consistently rewarding. ~ Alex Henderson

$14.29 Even when they aren't outstanding, Johnnie Taylor's '90s albums on Malaco are usually satisfying. None of his Malaco dates of the '80s and early to mid-'90s were weak or disappointing, and are at least worthwhile. (I Know It's Wrong, But I...) Just Can't Do Right doesn't qualify as one of Taylor's all-time best albums, but it's an above-average effort with many strong points. Whether going for a '60s-like Southern soul approach on "Guilty as Charged" and "Crazy over You," or a smoother, ...
| | Johnnie Taylor Good Love! CD (1996)
In Control album
$14.09 GOOD LOVE! finds the veteran R&B singer updating his style while maintaining the rich, soulful quality that has served him throughout his 35-year solo career. Taylor is in a somewhat schizophrenic mood on this release. Many cuts take a modern approach, with the instrumental focus on synthesizers and drum machines. Elsewhere, Taylor is accompanied by the storied Muscle Shoals rhythm section, dishing up some fine, horn-punctuated soul as gritty and powerful as anything in his stellar back catalog.
Long-time fans will be glad to hear that the more techno-minded cuts do not detract from the intensity of Taylor's voice. Rather, they cast it in sharp relief, emphasizing its character, like a deep shade of blue viewed against a translucent backdrop. There are more surprises along the way, including a guest vocal by Taylor's daughter Tasha and ...

In Control CD music
$13.99 GOTTA GET THE GROOVE BACK was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Album.
The last scheduled release from Johnnie Taylor before his death in May 2000 is a mix of contemporary and old-school R&B. Though there are drum machines and synthesizers a-plenty, Taylor's matchless, hurting tenor brings an ageless feel to everything it touches. With GOTTA GET THE GROOVE BACK he transcends his influences, and his former incarnations as Sam Cooke's successor in the legendary Soul Stirrers, the '60s soul singer of "Who's Making Love," and the '70s disco star of "Disco Lady".

| | Billy Cobham Flight Time CD (2006) (Import) Live; Germany
In Control songs
$11.35 A lesser known Cobham recording that has only been available in the U.S. as an import. Cobham also seems to push guitarists to new heights (i.e. Tommy Bolin, John Abercrombie, John Scofield) and does so here with Barry Finnerty. Their interaction on the tune "Flight Time" is reminiscent of Cobham/Bolin on Spectrum. Yet, despite the intensity and chops of Finnerty and Cobham, this session is remarkably restrained thanks in large part to the thoughtful playing of keyboardist Don Grolnick. There is a definite sense of a band here, rather than just a collection of all-stars playing Billy Cobham songs; in fact, the only Cobham retread is "Antares" (from Magic). Whether it is Don Grolnick's piano solo on "6 Persimmons" or his opening duet with Barry Finnerty on "Princess," Cobham should get just as much credit for what he did not play. It is a shame that this unit did not become Cobham's regular band as this is one of his most cohesive efforts. ~ Robert Taylor
Only a few times in history has a musician been singled out as the world-class master of his instrument. Billy ...
