Swing To Bop Guitar: Guitars In Flight 1939-1947 CD music
$14.38 That her band is deemed "remarkable" is no understatement; trumpeter Lew Soloff and saxophonist Andy Sheppard are among the outstanding soloists. As always, Bley's originals are intricate, absorbing, and often moving, with opener "Greasy Gravy" and the epic "Appearing Nightly at the Black Orchid" standing out. Her rearrangement of "I Hadn't Anyone `Til You" closes the disc with a lyrical flourish.
Since the 1960s, Carla Bley has been composing for big bands in a way that enriches the tradition and history of jazz, while creating new possibilities for the form. APPEARING NIGHTLY (2008) is yet another notch in her string of achievements. From the retro-themed cover art to the progressive yet nostalgia-tinged ...

Swing To Bop Guitar: Guitars In Flight 1939-1947 songs
$8.78 This 1991 recording by Keith Jarrett's so-called Standards Trio was recorded less than two weeks after the death of Miles Davis, who's pictured in silhouette on the cover photograph. The choice of material reflects that of Davis, the man to whom this music was recorded in tribute.
There are standards (such as the title song), bracing numbers by Davis contemporaries (Thelonious Monk's "Straight No Chaser" and Oliver Nelson's "Butch And Butch"), and eloquently emotive originals. The centerpiece is the extended "For Miles," which, over the course of its 18 minutes, celebrates the darkness and light of Davis's life and death. The fact ...

Swing To Bop Guitar: Guitars In Flight 1939-1947 CD music
$14.90 Fourplay has long been a supergroup of fusion and smooth jazz, consisting of keyboardist Bob James, guitarist Larry Carlton, bassist Nathan East, and drummer Harvey Mason, each a leader in his own right. For their debut on the Heads Up label, Fourplay works some world music influences into their mix. Also, emerging vocal star Esperanza Spalding makes an appearance. But fear not, Fourplay fans, there are still plenty of the hallmarks ...
| | Charlie Barnet 1941 CD (1984)
Swing To Bop Guitar: Guitars In Flight 1939-1947 music CDs
$13.85 Charlie Barnet's orchestra was called "the blackest white band of them all," by both Metronome and Down Beat Magazines. Heavily influenced by Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and to a lesser extent Jimmie Lunceford, Barnet's music was carefully constructed around the musical concepts of "black" jazz. Barnet paved the way for integration in swing orchestras.
1941 was a busy year for Charlie Barnet; on this particular date, he cut no less than 25 titles as radio transcriptions. Lena Horne and Rob Carroll each sing one tune apiece on the original Hep Records release, but this Circle reissue includes one additional vocal performance by Horne and two additional vocal performances by Carroll. Bobby Burnet (trumpet), Bill Miller (piano), Bus Entri (guitar) and Barnet himself on soprano, alto, and tenor saxophones all perform inspired solos. Many of the charts on 1941 were smartly arranged by Horace Henderson, and the band swings with panache on "Little John Ordinary," "Uptown Blues," and Barnet's theme song "Redskin Rhumba."
