Singer/songwriter Bijou Phillips has put together a debut album that is far ahead of what most rookies assemble their first time out. The daughter of John Phillips from The Mamas and The Papas, Bijou is not riding on Daddy's coattails by any means. Instead, she and producer Jerry Harrison (The Talking Heads) have managed to concentrate on polished, killer songs that show Bijou's range both vocally and as a songwriter. I'D RATHER EAT GLASS has much variation-- the high-paced energy of "I Am A Mountain," is easily offset by the piano ballad opening of "Little Dipper." The trippy drum programming and haunting electric piano of "So Tired" is endlessly engaging, while the moody flute work of "Polite," will leave listeners longing for a second listen.
Other noteworthy tracks include "I Own You", "Just Look Around" and "Breakfast," which was written at the tender age of thirteen. Though the world of female singer/songwriters is a crowded one, we can make room for one more talented individual. They say sometimes talent skips a generation. That's clearly not the case here.
