(2 Customer Reviews)
This is the quintessential "Outlaw country" album. Waylon Jennings spent the early '70s working his way up to this rough-and-tumble masterpiece, arguably the finest album of his prolific career. Jennings was so taken with the songwriting of Nashville rowdy Billy Joe Shaver that he decided to record this all-Shaver album (with the exception of the Fritts/Seals-penned "You Asked Me To"), which helped put Shaver on the map as the poet laureate of the Outlaw set.
Jennings eschewed the lush countrypolitan sound in favor of a raw, electrified approach that owed more to the Rolling Stones than to Billy Sherrill. With a small band and simple arrangements, he introduced contemporary rock-oriented beats into his hard-hitting country sound, adding some funky grit to Shaver's common-man poetics on tunes about the tougher side of life. HONKY TONK HEROES inspired a subsequent generation of country iconoclasts, as well as spurring on Jennings's contemporaries like Willie Nelson and Tompall Glaser. It stands as one of the most important country recordings of the '70s.

Waylon Jennings Honky Tonk Heroes Songs Honky Tonk Heroes Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) THE GREATEST! Waylon Jennings was my hero when I was a kid, now Im 25 and hes my hero all over again. Ive got everything he did in the 70s on vinyl and this is hands down the greatest. Billy Joe Shaver is a spirited songwriter and Waylon brought some of his greatest songs to life on this album.
Like every other era, people like to talk about how bad music sucks nowadays. Sure it sucks nowadays, but it always did. However, every generation has its legends and Waylon was one. He still is. He always will be. The difference is he was a legend in his own time. The whole world knew it too! And the world has plenty of potential legends in the making today. Bear in mind that legends need heroes too. Waylon had his and he has become a link in the chain of heroes and legends that need to be a part of the music of the generations that will follow them. Thats how legend survives. The world needs more Hank, more Cash, more Buddy, more Waylon, more spirit in our music today. Dare to be different-its okay to look back, thats the only way to move ahead. We cant take music forward if we dont know where its been. Thats what this album is about, thats what Waylon is, was, and will always be about. Play Waylon. You wont only hear heart and soul, youll feel it. Youll feel your own. Submitted by chubbsdarcy (La Tabatiere, Quebec, CANADA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

On these CDs one can hear the sound of antiquity, the present popular styles of the day, and a solid and well-executed vision of the future integrated into a gloriously rowdy, swinging whole.
