| | Ready Men Get Ready CD Ready Men Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
If you've never heard of these guys, don't worry--even back in their early-'60s heyday, they were world-famous only in Minneapolis, where they had a local hit with a totally over-the-top "Surfin' Bird"-derived take on "Shortnin' Bread." Which means they're barely a footnote to rock history, but GET READY--which collects (mostly) primitively recorded rehearsal tapes and live gigs--is terrific rowdy fun; in fact, on the evidence here, the Ready Men rocked out every bit as hard as more famous Northwest brethren like the Wailers. Get Ready music CDs
$20.79 Compared with Buffalo Bop's usual rockabilly and teen-rebel collections, this 33-song compilation is kind of dorky -- sort of a nerd's picture of rock & roll (the Richie Cunningham as opposed to the Fonzie playlist). Nobody appearing on this CD ever aspired to be really cool like Elvis or Gene Vincent; Ricky Nelson was as far as they got. But it's all great fun in its well-crafted, highly produced way, and some of the artists and labels here will actually be familiar--Tony Orlando ("The Loneliest"), Steve Lawrence ("Pretty Blue Eyes"), Milo Liggett ("Gold and Silver"), and the Barker Brothers ("Hey Little Mama") recorded for outfits like Monument, Epic, Brunswick, ABC, and Hickory. The Wonders ("Cuttin' Out"), the R-Dells ("You Say"), David Box ("Little Lonely Summer Girl") et al weren't rebels, they were would-be teen idols, and they weren't averse to delivering songs that were essentially teen-pop, albeit often with a good beat and some fairly prominent guitars amid the orchestras ...

$20.19 30 tracks, w. Walt Benton, Eddie McKinney, Charlie Gore, Jerry Parson, Ron Berry, Jerry Siefert, Jerry Fuller+
This is a pretty uneven collection, which is not surprising given the fact that the title track by Reggie Perkins is one of the coolest things here and it's from a juvenile delinquency B-movie of the same name. The Jays' "Panic Stricken" is pretty fair rock & roll, but "Jitterbug Joe" is one of those minor embarrassments of the genre, a silly novelty tune. Ronnie Allen's "High School Love" sets the middle-range here, a pleasant, serviceable but undistinguished piece of rock & roll that doesn't quite come off, missing the cues that would make it a good record. Jerry Parsons' "Undecided" represents the more countrified sound well enough, and Lee Dresser's "Thinking 'bout Your Love" is a good piece of mainstream rock & roll, with a full band (with sax). Bill James' "School's Out" sounds a lot like a later Cadillacs' number (specifically "Please Mr. Johnson"), a comic novelty piece complete with basso-voice commentary; it isn't bad, but it's not what you pay your money for. "Drink Wine" by Earl Reed is one of dozens of renditions of "Drinkin' Wine Spo-Dee-O-Dee," and is ...

Get Ready CD music
$26.15 The death of Bo Diddley in 2008 provided an occasion to reassess the man's sizable contribution to rock & roll, and the nicely compiled ROAD RUNNER: THE CHESS MASTERS 1959-1960, also released in '08, facilitates the purpose. ROAD RUNNER packs 52 tracks onto two discs, adding up to a case history of Diddley's distinctive, groove-driven, blues-and-soul-fueled genius. In addition to well-known Diddley tunes featuring his classic line-up of two guitars, bass drums, and vocals (with a variety of his trademark beats), ROAD RUNNER features 23 previously unreleased tracks (including many alternate takes), making it a must for collectors ...
| | Mary Black Looking Back CD (1995)
Get Ready music CDs
$15.65 LOOKING BACK, Mary Black's 1995 collection of pop songs from four of her earlier albums, showcases the Irish folkie's eclectic, resonant work and includes two new tracks. Delicate and sensitive one minute, growling and defiant the next, Mary Black has the ability to turn herself inside out, getting into the heart and soul of the characters she sings about. The album begins with the single "Soul Sister" where Black musically unites all women through the love, devotion, and even the missteps that they all share on their travels. "No Frontiers," luminously sung with an upbeat and hopeful vibe, implores listeners to always keep their hearts open without any boundaries. Black, known for her lilting soprano, uses her lower register to great dramatic effect on "Ellis Island," relating the personal pain of immigrants leaving their homeland, setting out to an unknown future. "Bright Blue Rose," sung almost as a meditation, is one of Black's most precious songs as she encourages everyone to seek their own path and diverge as much as possible until they find their way. "Only A Woman's Heart" (the title track from a compilation album, which has become the best selling album in Irish history) features a high-flying duet with the magnificent Emmylou Harris. The two voices mesh so beautifully and become one solid instrument, making the song a searing portrait of a woman's feelings and desires. Black excels at her musical portraits of women as they challenge themselves to move on or simply find the courage to stand completely still and comprehend their place in the world.
