BETTER BE GOOD features 1977-79 studio recordings, alternate takes from THE REAL KIDS and demos.
Recorded in Newton and Boston, Massachusetts; Nyack, New York. Includes liner notes by John Felice.
BETTER BE GOOD is an 18-track compilation of alternate takes and live versions of songs that showed up on various releases by the Real Kids and the Taxi Boys, who for all intents and purposes were the same band. Leader John Felice, who was in the first, unrecorded lineup of the Modern Lovers with his next-door neighbor Jonathan Richman in the early '70s and later roadied for the Ramones, is a punk rock savant; the Real Kids were the first truly great Boston punk band, although they sounded much more like the Flamin Groovies than the Sex Pistols. These three-chord rockers, bracketed by two versions of the great "All Kindsa Girls," are tough, cool, and catchy. Complete novices should probably start with the original albums, but these alternate versions are much more than mere ephemera.
Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini.
The Real Kids: John Felice (vocals, guitar); Allen "Alpo" Paulino (vocals, bass); Billy Borgioli, Billy Cole (guitar); Howard Ferguson (drums).
Producers: Oedipus, The Real Kids, Marty Thau, John Felice, Phil Adler.Entertainment Weekly (11/12/99, p.83) - "...bright-eyed rock marked by the winning purity of frontman John Felice's adolescent vision....GOOD is sort of an alternate version of [their self-titled album]..." - Rating: A- Real Kids Better Be Good Songs Better Be Good Music Review Average Rating: (5 out of 5 stars) The Real Deal For anyone who dug the Real Kids first record, the bulk of what's on Better Be Good comprises alternate (outtake) versions of all the same material, mostly differing in the vocal delivery (and indeed more in keeping with the band's live sound in those days). An essential supplement to the red star (1st) album. Top that off with the band's debut single versions of "All Kindsa Girld" and "Common At Noon", and 4 great cuts from the Bomp label EP (heretofor not available on CD) and you have what is probably The Real Kids best showing on compact disc, at the very least the equal of the first album or the best material on the live Grown Up Wrong set. What an edge, boy! Unlike most of the folks,i strongly recommend this alternative collection of rehearsals & demos,as they represent the Kids at their best...
You just can't sit down when hearing the sonic thunderstorm these four boys from suburban areas generate groove after groove...
Needless to say they were stars in France & complete unknowns in their homeland(remember the Groovies, buddy?).
So,eat your heart out,Mr Bush, the frogs had impeccable taste this time around!!! Submitted by Antoine RIDEL (PARIS FRANCE§) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Better Be Good
$12.59 Oregon-based Elliot Smith was a long shot underdog for commercial success. A decidedly grim-natured whisperer, Smith is the antithesis of Oregon's celebrated grunge scene. He eschews fuzz-laden power chords and rhythmic sludge for stark acoustics and hushed intensity. The quiet force of this release is deceptively low key. Underneath the stark ...

Better Be Good
$12.45 This singer/songwriter can say more with a whisper than most folks can with a scream. The gently insinuating despair of Smith's work communicates volumes about the heartbreak and alienation that is the bane of 20th century boys with too much time on their hands. Smith's day job fronting the aggressive post-punk band Heatmiser provides ...
| | Elliott Smith Xo CD (1998)
Better Be Good
$11.99 The Cinderella-esque climb from lo-fi indie cult artist to Grammy nominee/major label darling must have been a perilous one for Smith, who makes the leap to the big time here after three well-regarded albums on small labels. He's lost none of his bite, though. The production values on XO may be slightly higher, but Smith's vision remains undiluted.
The production, centered around acoustic guitar augmented by keyboards and lush vocal harmonies, recalls pop icons like the Beach Boys (especially on the closing acapella cut), Beatles and Big Star, but this is no sunny Cali-pop album. Leavening the instrumental brightness are Smith's Nick Drake-ish whisper and his thoroughly downcast lyrics, which cast him squarely in the Mark Eitzel/Smog camp of unrelenting self-effacement and misery. The combination of Smith's internal angst and his melodic pop constructions makes for a compelling artistic tension.

| | Elliott Smith Figure 8 CD (2000)
Better Be Good
$11.99 On his first record since his Oscar nomination courtesy director Gus Van Zandt's use of his music in the film "Good Will Hunting," Elliott Smith returns with another album's worth of gorgeous misery. Like Nick Drake before him, Smith has the ability to conjure beautifully poignant pathos, wrapping it in an elaborately arranged package worthy of a George Martin or Brian Wilson. Working with Beck/Foo Fighters producer Rob Schnapf, Smith uses Abbey Road Studios for some of these sessions, dressing up his tortured lyrics with orchestral arrangements that avoid any hint of mawkishness.
Whether mourning a busted-up romance in "Everything Reminds Me Of Her," shying away from love on "In the Lost and Found (Honky Bach)," or burrowing into their own isolation with "Can't Make A Sound," Smith's angelic vocals and harmonies recall CSN before their creative meter ...
| | Elliott Smith New Moon CDs (2007) Digipak
Better Be Good
$15.09 Nearly four years after his tragic death, NEW MOON is a two-disc compilation of previously unissued recordings by the late singer-songwriter Elliott Smith. The majority of the 24 tracks on NEW MOON are solo home recordings featuring only Smith's voice and guitar, most of them recorded between 1994 and 1998 as Smith was leaving the band Heatmiser for his solo career. Given that Smith's solo albums, prior to his major label debut, FIGURE EIGHT, were themselves mostly lo-fi acoustic solo recordings, there is little difference between these quiet, haunted tunes and his proper albums of the ...

Better Be Good
$10.59 Originally released on Atlantic. Includes liner notes by Marv Goldberg.
SEE SEE RYDER/BLUES BALLADS is a one-CD collection of albums LaVern Baker released in 1963 and 1959, respectively. The tracks are not presented in the original sequence, but the ones dating from 1963 are easily identifiable-they're in stereo and tend to feature prominent bass guitar, then something of a novelty.

Better Be Good
$51.25 This generous two-disc compilation does an excellent job of tracing soul legend Marvin Gaye's career. It moves from his earliest, most pop-oriented recordings ("How Sweet It Is," "I'll Be Doggone") to his famed duets with Tammi Terrell ("Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing") and his later, more socially conscious work from the WHAT'S GOING ON era. Things kick off marvelously with the vibrant "Stubborn Kind of Fellow," where Marvin works his magic around sassy vocal assists from the Vandellas and a slightly Latin-tinged arrangement sporting flute and cowbell.
Other stops along the way include songs from the ultimate make-out album LET'S GET IT ON, the latter-day glory of the subtly sensual "Sexual Healing," and of course the immortal "I Heard It Through the Grapevine," the scorned-love anthem whose ominous intro alone is enough to secure Mr. Gaye a place in pop heaven.
