Gutarist Peter Leitch's soft and inviting tone sometimes hides the fact that he is often a hard-swinging and burning soloist. For this Reservoir CD, he holds his own with such top players as trumpeter Claudio Roditi, altoist Gary Bartz, the reeds of Jed Levy, pianist John Hicks, bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Marvin "Smitty" Smith. The impressive septet performs four of Leitch's originals (including "Song for Jobim") and a song apiece by Bartz, Smith, Harold Land, Charles Mingus ("Duke Ellington's Sound of Love") and Cole Porter ("I Concentrate on You"). This is excellent hard bop music that lives up to its potential. ~ Scott Yanow

Colours & Dimensions songs
$14.49 The Chiraroscuro label has mined a lot of gold from the sea: the superb music made at the Floating Jazz Festivals on the S.S. Norway and Queen Elizabeth II over the years. Recorded live and lovingly, these CDs feature top musicians playing under-relaxed vacation conditions, and this one, recorded on the Queen in the fall of 2000, is another gleaming gem: the first to feature legendary bop altoist Phil Woods as leader. He's joined by the sparkling Bill Charlap Trio and consummate trumpeter Roy Hargrove (on two tracks) for a long, swinging, straight-ahead set, full of feeling and mutual inspiration. Woods is smooth, strong, and absolutely assured; he's so expressive, he's nearly ...

| | Jimmy Scott Moon Glow CD (2003)
Colours & Dimensions CD music
$12.35 Afflicted as a child with Kallman's syndrome, a rare hormonal deficiency that stunted his growth and left him with a high-pitched and eerily androgynous voice, Jimmy Scott had a successful career as a jazz singer in the 1940s and 1950s, but then dropped from view until his rediscovery in the 1990s. At age 78, his voice can no longer be reasonably described as "pretty," but he is generally hailed as a song interpreter in a style somewhat similar to that of Billie Holiday or Mabel Mercer -- someone whose interpretive flair and deeply personal delivery transform the familiar songs that are his bread and butter. On Moon Glow, he picks up where he left off with "But Beautiful," accompanied by a crack group of A-list session men (including Eric Alexander, Hank Crawford, David "Fathead" Newman, and George Mraz) on a program of pop and jazz standards. The album is ...
| | Angela Hagenbach Poetry Of Love CD (2004)
Colours & Dimensions music CDs
$20.25 The name Angela Hagenbach may be new to jazz fans living beyond her hometown of Kansas City, but her sultry, restrained, and breathy vocal style is beautifully familiar -- at times, you might feel you're listening to a new Diana Krall project, but with a more exotic edge. This is especially clear when she plays it straight and sticks to the trio format, as she does on the easy swinging "I Can't Believe You're in Love With Me." The real key to Hagenbach's artistry -- and what will help her establish her own identity -- is her unique choices of style (journeying often into world music territory) and her love for a colorful delivery of very poetic lyrics. She turns Michael Franks' soulful "Tell Me All About It" into a cool, sexy bossa with a Rhodes undercurrent (courtesy of Roger Wilder). The bossa treatment of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "It Might as Well Be Spring" is similarly colorful. She turns "Dark Dreams," an original sonnet by lyricist Phyllis Becker, into a lively, witty Afro-Cuban adventure that allows her to express a deeper vocal timbre. Hagenbach then turns Becker's pantoum poem "You Keep Calling Me" into a brisk, gleefully percussive jam done in the Bahian afoxe style. Closer to home, she tackles "Blues Are Brewin'" by alternating her own seductive style with a hilarious historic dialogue with a mumbling Clark Terry, who also adds his inimitable muted trumpet expertise to the track. Other all-star guests who should help Hagenbach boost her visibility are Russell Malone and Jimmy Heath. ~ Jonathan Widran
Angela HagenbachKansas City singer/songwriter, "Angela Hagenbach, is one of those rare jazz vocalists who finds more in a song than the composer penned. Certainly more than one finds on the lyric sheet. Like Sarah Vaughan or Shirley Horn, Angela Hagenbach inhabits a song, and breathes new life into her carefully selected material. "Poetry of Love" is the answer to the question, 'Where have all the great jazz vocal records gone?'" writes Mark Bacon Producer/Host, Jazz After Dark and Pan American Rhythms, KRVS ...
