Gutarist Peter Leitch's soft and inviting tone sometimes hides the fact that he is often a hard-swinging and burning soloist. For this Reservoir CD, he holds his own with such top players as trumpeter Claudio Roditi, altoist Gary Bartz, the reeds of Jed Levy, pianist John Hicks, bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Marvin "Smitty" Smith. The impressive septet performs four of Leitch's originals (including "Song for Jobim") and a song apiece by Bartz, Smith, Harold Land, Charles Mingus ("Duke Ellington's Sound of Love") and Cole Porter ("I Concentrate on You"). This is excellent hard bop music that lives up to its potential. ~ Scott Yanow
