Mcclurkin Project album
$13.89 Saxmen always seem intent on giving listeners a fair amount of pleasure, as Marion Meadows (Pleasure) and now Walter Beasley on For Your Pleasure demonstrate. Beasley -- who started his career in the '80s as an R&B singer and does a nifty quiet storm dance on "Do You Wanna Dance" -- commits to this concept in the most logical way possible; for two key tracks, he relies on the writing and trip-hoppy production expertise of Scot Rammer and Dino Esposito, who hit pay dirt with Paul Taylor last year on -- what else? -- Pleasure Seeker. On the title track, Beasley winds his swaying soprano ...

| | Beyonce I Am...Sasha Fierce CD (2008) (Import) Bonus Track; Deluxe Edition; United Kingdom
Mcclurkin Project CD music
$9.99 I AM. SASHA FIERCE represents another change of pace for Beyoncé. Unlike the relatively streamlined, retro-soul inflected B'DAY, I AM... is a sprawling two-disc set designed to reflect two conflicting sides of Beyoncé's musical personality. The first disc sports reflective, sometimes moody ballads, while the second, attributed to Beyoncé's brash alter ego, Sasha Fierce, is loaded with propulsive dance-floor fillers. Except for this stylistic divide, I AM. pays only nominal attention to its supposed concept, focusing instead on a set of excellent, radio-ready songs--neatly avoiding the possibility of I AM. becoming some sort of Chris Gaines-style conceptual disaster. Though the second disc, which boasts the synth-drenched lead single, "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)," is more immediately gratifying, the impeccably produced ballads of the first disc represent a vast improvement on the ...
| | Ruff Ryders Ryde Or Die, Vol. 2 CD (2000)
Mcclurkin Project music CDs
$11.99 The Ruff Ryders clique has spawned such acts as DMX, The Lox, and Eve, but it was their first collaborative effort RYDE OR DYE VOL. I that marked their territory as a powerful hip-hop crew. They return with the follow-up RYDE OR DYE VOL. II to reestablish themselves as the collective that just won't stop.
Under the direction of producer Swizz Beatz, the Ruff Ryders rip the tracks like hungry rappers still looking for a record deal. The album showcases more new artists this time around, but remains heavy on the superstars, with artists such as the Ruff Ryders' own DMX as well as guests ...
| | DJ Rolando Nite:Life 016 CD (2003)
Mcclurkin Project songs
$18.59 This is a continuous in-the-mix CD compiled and mixed by DJ Rolando.
Following a couple of excellent Underground Resistance mix CDs comprised exclusively of tracks culled from the Detroit label's deep catalog, DJ Rolando recorded a relatively mainstream effort for the British Nite:Life series that once again showcases his deft mixing skills and unique track selection. It's somewhat refreshing to hear Rolando expand his horizons here. His UR mixes (The Aztec Mystic Mix [1999], Vibrations [2003]) were fantastic and showcased the merits of Detroit techno exceptionally well, but it was somewhat frustrating to hear such an obviously gifted DJ confined, even if the confines were relatively vast as in the case of the UR catalog. Rolando culls his selections on Nite:Life 016 from a variety of sources. There are of course a few Detroit tracks, most notably "Quetzal," a beautiful collaboration between the DJ and Gerald Mitchell as Los Hermanos; "No UFO's," Juan Atkins' 1985 classic (as Model 500) that sounds absolutely standout here alongside its fellow inclusions; and "Love Got Me High," another Motor City classic, this one an uplifting house anthem produced by Terrence Parker (as Seven Grand Housing Authority). And there are also a number ...
| | Patrick Porter Lisha Kill CD (2005)
Mcclurkin Project album
$13.85 Patrick Porter's Lisha Kill falls very much under the spell of Pink Floyd in both their Syd Barrett and post-Barrett days. It's not so much a case of explicit imitation (though there certainly are moments that bring vintage ...

Mcclurkin Project music CDs
$12.39 On the fourth volume of Tommy Boy's 12-volume Hip Hop Essentials series, some of rap's most memorable figures counsel listeners about the dangers of drugs (Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five's "White Lines") and promiscuity (Kool Moe Dee's "Go See the Doctor"), detail some of the grim issues of inner city life (Kurtis Blow's "8 Million Stories"), drop some serious izzle-speak (U.T.F.O.'s "Roxanne, Roxanne," ...

| | Jenn Taranto Move On From Me CD (2006)
Mcclurkin Project album
$15.19 Jenn Taranto is a singer, first and foremost. Her music, at this early point in her career, has been very mellow, ambient and serious and relies heavily on violins and vocal harmonies. Jenn's debut album, Move on from Me, released in May 2006, was recorded in her apartment and reflects the serious and obsessive part of Jenn's personality. Most songs explore common themes such as her behavior in relationships and her inability to let things go. Dan MacIntosh from Indie-Music wrote, 'There is a sadness and a beauty to Jenn Taranto's music, and it's not always clear which of these two distinct descriptions will have the final say.' The album, which Jenn first planned to record using vocal and guitar layering, evolved to combine a great deal of layering violin parts, performed by Katie Quann. Much of Katie's work was improvised. Justin Kipp, Jenn's boyfriend and musician, influenced the overall orchestration of the album. Jenn completed a West Coast tour this summer in support of the release, and found her audiences to be very receptive. Local ...
