Mya's eponymous debut is a smooth, sultry collection of well-crafted contemporary urban soul that is actually richer than the average urban record the late '90s. Part of its success lies with the teenage Mya, who has a voice that is at once innocent and knowing, and part of it lies with her excellent team of producers and songwriters. Executive producer A. Haqq Islam has assembled a stellar behind-the-scenes team -- featuring Babyface, Diane Warren, Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott and members of Dru Hill -- which has written and produced a fine set of songs that manage to sound universal and strangely confessional. That's because many of the songs on the record are loosely about a teenager becoming a woman, which is a subject Mya can convincingly sell. There are a few weak moments, to be sure, but overall it's a thoroughly promising debut. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine How often can a debut artist boast of working with the likes of superstar songwriters like Babyface and Diane Warren? 18-year-old Mya can. Aided by top-notch talent including Dru Hill's Sisqo and Nokio and Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliot ("Bye-Bye"), Mya holds up her end of the bargain by delivering one of the sweetest voices in music today. The depth expressed in her songs is impressive for a person of such a young age. In addition, Mya brings writing skills to the table, co-writing four songs. "It's All About Me," featuring Sisqo, exploded on urban and Top 40 radio. That's not even mentioning "Ghetto Supastar," featuring Pras (Fugees) and Ol' Dirty Bastard (Wu-Tang Clan), which appears on the soundtrack to BULWORTH. Not only are the songs smartly arranged and well crafted, the overall sound of the album is as tight as any contemporary R&B record around.Vibe (6-7/98, p.182) - "...This Washington, D.C. native always sings with a voice that is clear, strong, and assured. Combining round-the-way girl sass with an artist's sensibility..." Mya Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) What Happend 2 Her? I Always liked Aaliyah Brandy and Monica. Then Mya came out and i was like shes a little diffrent form them but she was cool to me to. But this is the only CD i think is pretty dame good bye her. Like was wasnt THAT bad of a singger her voice had something cool about it and most of the songs on this CD are pretty touching. Now today on her CDs 99% of her songs are about sex. On this CD the songs were about LOVE not SEX. Im only 16 ok but love 90s RnB/Hip Hop, because today everyone in my class lissens to crappy singgers on the radio i wont name them cuz im not mean like that. But anyway i dont care what anyone says SEX is not LOVE. And music often has that mix today. But shame on Mya for falling into that trap. And were is she now the last i herd was her last CD was only came out in Japan if that tell you anything. She could have done more with her music and now here we are 10 years latter and shes gone Submitted by Jesse Latimer (Canada) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Sounds Good... I definately could hear Monica and 702 back in the days singing some of her joints. Mya needs a style specifically for her but the album it's slef seems to make a good teenage houseparty saler. Submitted by brakethechain2000 (VA 2 GA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Mya I remember this album when I was 11 and I loved "It's All About Me".This CD shows Mya's range and her musical stylings. This album proves it. The songs are expressed in her own way of saying things. This album is for her as from a teenager to an adult. MYA is an promising debut. | | South Park Mexican Time Is Money CD (2000)
Mya
$11.65 Explicit Lyrics;Aka Spm
Personnel includes: SPM, Ayana M, Baby Beesh, DJ Kane, Grimm, 2 Tone, Gary L. Moon, Shadow Ramirez. Producers include: Freestyle, Happy Perez, 2 Tone, Shadow, Mikey. Engineers: Shadow Ramirez, James Hoover, "Big Bert" Trevino. For his first album under his distribution deal with Universal Records, South Park Mexican seems quite comfortable with his increasing popularity, rapping like a veteran here. It's nice to hear him handling most of the album's rapping duties after his previous release, The Purity Album, seemed more like a compilation issued under his name. The production is a bit more polished here than on previous SPM albums, and the rhymes flow much more fluidly than ever before, making it arguably the most well-crafted SPM album to date. If there is one major problem, though, it involves SPM's level of comfort -- he almost seems too comfy here, knowing that he's finally crossed over into major label territory. One somewhat misses the inspired efforts of older, rawer albums such as Hustle Town. ~ Jason Birchmeier "Houston native South Park Mexican is a cult hero in his home state of Texas with his old school rhyming style ...

Mya
$7.29 Lucinda Williams/Lyle Lovett/ Alison Krauss/Steve Earle/John
Liner Note Author: Billy Altman. Subtitling this compilation The Best of Alt-Country would lead listeners to believe that there might actually be some alternative country performers on the CD. Okay, maybe that's a bit harsh, but while Alison Krauss, Jerry Jeff Walker, Buck Owens, John Hiatt, and Don Williams are all spectacular performers, lumping them in as alt-country seems to be missing the mark. To be fair, Steve Earle, BR5-49, Iris DeMent, Junior Brown, and ...
