If you swear by Faith No More, if the musical stylings of those fun-loving Chili Peppers really get the blood moving through your veins, if the Sex Pistols are your idea of a great band from the past (and why shouldn't they be?)--well, podna', ... Full Descriptionallow us to introduce you to Toadies. No, not "The" Toadies. Just Toadies, thank you, and leave your eardrums at the door. This Fort Worth hard-core quartet serve up a singular brand of punky blues: lots of noisy, guitar-centered songs, and a healthy dose of irony. In other words, these guys don't take themselves too seriously, and RUBBERNECK is all the better for it.
Take "Possum Kingdom," in which Todd Lewis pitches his woo with more than a hint of sarcasm--or is it? "I'm not gonna lie/I'll not be a gentleman/Behind the boathouse/I'll show you my dark secret..." Behind the boathouse, behind it all, the band churns, slow and funky, while a whining, circular guitar riff almost seems to mock the proceedings. There's more than a little Nirvana influence--Andy Wallace, who worked on that band's seminal "Nevermind," also did the mixing chores here.
This is Alternative Rock that doesn't sound like all the other Alternative Rock out there, mainly because the band has a knack for stringing together simple but devastatingly effective rock hooks. Witness "Tyler," another track that showcases Toadies' ability to explode out of a spare, bass-driven pulse, into a brutal wash of cloudy guitars and loops of feedback.
Recorded at Record Two Mendocino, Mendocino, California and Sunset Sound Factory, Hollywood, California.
Toadies: Todd Lewis (vocals, guitar); Darrel Herbert (guitar); Lisa Umbarger (bass); Mark Reznicek (drums).
Alternative Press (1/95, p.70) - "...they can't help but sound like a beefy Texas version of the Pixies....throw in a mite of Cheap Trick, recent Soundgarden and some generic headbanger alterna-metal as well..." Hide Description Rubberneck Music Review Average Rating: (4.2 out of 5 stars) Excellent! I know this album is 13 years old, it refreshing to hear some damn rock. With obvious pixies influences the Toadies just plain and simply rock. Buy it. Submitted by levelu9 (ocoee, Fl usa) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 3 found this helpful.
All Around Great Album This is one of my favorite albums, period. You can listen to it all the way through, each song is good. Tyler is the stand out track and one of my favorite songs of all time. Great 90s disc. Submitted by a reviewer (Louisville, KY) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 3 found this helpful.
I've never heard anything this good ever. This cd is great and I can't tell myself to stop listening. I'm addicated to this cd's awsome approach to music. It's great cause it has "STYLE" and "VARITY". I'll tell you something about each track.
"1 Mexican Hairless" is a musical/non-vocalizing. It starts by warming up to a jamming part.
"2 Mister Love" is kinda like the first one in my opinion, but it's cooler. Vocals sound like him screaming.
"3 Backslider" has got to be one of my favorites on this cd. The music sounds like a rock&roll show with it's awsome guitaring and vocals.
"4 Possum Kingdom", the truly remarkable song with the Wammy Bar sounds. Great and sweet, I could listen to this track over and over.
"5 Quitter" with loud distortion, loud bass, and all about its energy. Lyrics are good. Overall a great track.
"6 Away" Is a great track. Sounds different from all the other tracks.
"7 I Come From The Water" offers quite an exceptional track listening that sounds like you're listening to old rock.
"8 Tyler" The beginging's nice touch of a siren and the nice quote, "I will be with her tonight."
"9 Happyface" This one has good guitaring with crazy singing.
"10 Velvet" Quick guitaring and slight-screaming singing.
"11 I Burn" Slow begining, but don't lose interest. It's a great one and it has great lyrics. Submitted by a reviewer (Michigan) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 3 found this helpful.

You people seriously overrated this one I found Toadies in a Flea Market and bought it on a limb. I got home and started listening to it, and it wasn't anything great. i think it is quite bland. it isn't unique, it isn't that original, it isn't worth wasting your money for. Thank goodness it only costed 1 dollar when i got or I would've been so mad. Submitted by Lola (Hell, Kentucky) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No 2 of 4 found this helpful.
