Guitarist Joe Morris and violinist Mat Maneri have logged very rewarding time together in the Joe Morris Quartet, a group which springs largely from the launching pad of pre-written melodic lines. Here, the two engage in 10 fully improvised, yet deeply lucid, conversations one-on-one.
The overall decibel level is low, though the exchanges can move quickly from introspection to intense volleys of assertiveness. Morris' clean, rapidly picked lines, variegated chording, and classic jazz guitar tone mesh exquisitely with Maneri's resinous bowing and occasional bass line plucking. These are two individuals strongly rooted in the rich soil of a shared language; the depth of their exchanges results in a series of awesome new expressions. An example of the surprises to be found is during "Eyes Or Gaze," when just such an exchange ends up sounding like music that might be heard in the court of an ancient Chinese Emperor. How this happens provides for very deep listening. A highly rewarding album for those interested in the complex processes of thought and communication, and the emotional responses inherent therein.
