| | Best Of George Thorogood: 30 Years Of Rock CD (2004) Remastered
Bon Temps Rouler
$11.29 If George Thorogood did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him. With his Delaware Destroyers by his side, Thorogood spent the 1970s, '80s, and '90s cutting through all pretense and pomposity with a raw, rootsy, bare-bones style steeped in traditional blues, R&B, and early rock & roll. His gravelly vocals, power-tool slide guitar, and no-frills bar-band aesthetic have endeared him to fans of honest, good-time music for decades, as documented on this hits package.
30 YEARS OF ROCK is like a walk through through American musical history, as Thorogood makes his way through the songs of such roots legends as Hank Williams (a rocked-up version of "Move It on Over," a proto-rockabilly song to begin with), ...

| | The Essential Coco Montoya CD (2009)
Bon Temps Rouler
$8.75 Santa Monica-born guitarist Coco Montoya has been a member of Albert Collins' Icebreakers (as a drummer), and was the first lead guitarist in John Mayall's re-formed Bluesbreakers in 1985. He is, of course, best known as a solo artist with six recordings cut between 1995 and 2007. Blind Pig Records was the first label Montoya recorded on as a solo artist, and he cut three albums for the imprint -- GOTTA MIND TO TRAVEL, YA THINK I'D KNOW BETTER, and the incredible JUST LET GO. The 2009 compilation THE ESSENTIAL COCO MONTOYA compiles the essential tracks from his Blind Pig stint. There are a dozen tracks here, all reflecting the more R&B and soul-based approach Montoya's form of the electric blues takes; it is one of the things that makes him fresh and unique -- combined with his stellar singing voice and signature guitar style. This serves him better than it would most post-'80s blues guitarists, who take a far more rock & roll-based approach. The funny thing is, most of the latter claim to be influenced by Stevie Ray Vaughan, but it is Montoya who captures the R&B aspect of Vaughan's music, though it came to him from working with Collins, another Texan. The set kicks off with a stellar version of Robert Ward's "Fear No Evil," where Montoya's voice and guitar are in equal balance with a crack rhythm section ...

| | Four Kings Of Blues Guitar CDs (2009)
Bon Temps Rouler
$13.19 If the music on this little slab wasn't so utterly hot, this would have been merely a novelty record. The Four Kings in the title refer to, of course, B.B. Albert, and Freddie King (the last two were brothers), and the fourth ascendant to the throne, who is perhaps lesser known except by blues aficionados, but is well-known to soul music fans, Earl King -- electric guitar masters all. This two-disc collection assembles between five and six of each artist's best-known cuts, giving the listener a solid introduction to their best material, making this a solid blues primer for those who follow the sounds of modern-day bluesmen like Eric Clapton (influenced deeply by Freddie King, he covered "Hideaway" when he was with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers), Stevie Ray Vaughan (whose worship of Albert King was well-documented -- there is a terrific bootleg of the two playing together), and Jimi Hendrix (who learned some licks firsthand from Earl and covered ...
| | Jimmy Lewis Still Wanna Be Black CD (1997) (Import) United Kingdom
Bon Temps Rouler
$16.85 The core of this 20-song CD reissue is Lewis' 1974 album, Totally Involved; Ace has essentially more than doubled the length of that record by adding twelve unreleased tracks from the same era. Totally Involved was a pleasant, unremarkable record that seemed a bit more like a catalog of styles than an original vision. "It Ain't What's on the Woman" is a good Stax-styled slice of gospel-soul (with lengthy spoken parts); "Is That Any Way to Treat a Lady" hints at a Philly soul groove; "That Won't Stop Me From Loving You" has a smidgen of Norman Whitfield's early-'70s Temptations productions; and so forth. The unreleased bonus tracks are at least up to the standard of Totally Involved, and perhaps a tad better in their slightly earthier blends of pop and roots soul. He gets into some bluesy down-home soul on "I Intend to Take Your Place," and delivers a good statement of black pride, somewhat along the lines of a deep-soul Curtis Mayfield, on "Still ...
