Though late New Orleans genius James Booker belongs to a lineage of the city's ivory ticklers that includes Jelly Roll Morton, Tuts Washington and Professor Longhair, his oddball musical approach, and his unique blend of classical, R&B, barrelhouse boogie, and jazz, almost requires its own musicological category. On this 1976 release, the artist's first full solo recording, Booker veers from treatments of Chopin ("Black Minute Waltz") to standards ("Sunny Side of the Street") to marvelously revamped versions of "Good Night Irene," "Junco Partner" and "Pop's Dilemma" (a song written by Booker's father) with a skill that flat-out astonishes.

Even though the average pop fan only knows Booker T and the MGs for their biggest Top 40 hit under their own name, the supremely funky instrumental "Green Onions," they were THE backing band of the '60s. Nearly every one of the classic Stax/Volt singles of this era--by Sam and Dave, Otis Redding and a seemingly endless list of others--features organist Booker T. Along with labelmate Junior Kimbrough, Burnside can be credited with bringing back real, gutbucket blues to a public numbed by the Kenny Wayne Sheperds of the world. His raw, electric style fuses Chicago and Delta blues into an arresting, often hypnotic swirl. Guitarist Marc Ribot is well-known and respected for his session work with the likes of Tom Waits and Elvis Costello, as well as his association with John Zorn and other downtown New York experimental musicians. Like several others in that scene, Ribot has formed a group to create an outlet for an interest in ethnic music, in this case, the music of the late Cuban composer, instrumentalist, and bandleader Arsenio Rodriguez, who wrote most of the tunes on this CD. The result is a well-crafted album that should bring Cuban music to a whole new audience.
The album's overall feel is understated--on many cuts it's just Ribot, a bassist, a drummer, and a percussionist. Ribot's guitar solos are always highly articulate and he has a great command over a variety of tones. A few cuts ...
