| | Elmo Williams Takes One To Know One CD Elmo Williams Discography of CDs
This album contains some of the noisiest and most unapologetically down-home blues recorded in the post-war era. Hezekiah Early and Elmo Williams are both semi-professional musicians, but both play and sing as if their life depended on it, with force and power. The blues this duo plays are decidedly modern (even post-modern), and would appeal to any fan of Sonic Youth's white noise rock and Captain Beefheart's Dadaesque R&B. Williams' guitar on "Hoopin' and Hollern'" sounds like it was played through a completely fired amp, and Early's harp on "Insane Instrumental" sounds like a trucker grinding gears. But that doesn't mean the duo can't conjure up some soul. William's gospel-ish "Let It All Go" closes the album. ~ John Duffy

CMJ (1/11/99, p.9) - "...For pure feeling it's hard to beat Williams's overdriven guitar and his soulful, pathos filled holler. Coupled with Early's simultaneously played harp and drums redux, the effect is downright timeless..." Takes One To Know One Music Elmo Williams Takes One To Know One Songs | 1. | Mother's Dead |

| | Virginia Rodrigues Sol Negro CD (1997)
Takes One To Know One CD music
$13.85 Arising from obscurity, 33-year-old Virginia Rodrigues, who grew up outside of Salvador, Brazil, was introduced to the recording world by Brazil's popular singer Caetano Veloso. Sol Negro is an incredible album that mixes the vocal talents of Rodrigues and percussive rhythms of her native Brazil. To describe this recording as heavenly or hymn-like wouldn't be too far-fetched; the album's rhythms work in tandem to cradle Rodrigues' celestial voice. On the a cappella track "Verônica," she demonstrates ...
| | Cubanismo Reencarnacion CD (1998)
Takes One To Know One music CDs
$10.59 As the title suggests, Cubanismo's third album is a reincarnation of sorts, with several new band members and an even greater variety of musical stylings explored. One thing that hasn't changed is the almost tangible intensity and excitement that Jesus Alemany and company bring to every song, whether a traditional Cuban number originally performed a half century ago or a new composition. This album is slightly ...

$25.35 Recorded between 1962 and 1993. Includes liner notes by Bill Belmont and Rob Bowman.
Even though the average pop fan only knows Booker T and the MGs for their biggest Top 40 hit under their own name, the supremely funky instrumental "Green Onions," they were THE backing band of the '60s. Nearly every one of the classic Stax/Volt singles of this era--by Sam and Dave, Otis Redding and a seemingly endless list of others--features organist Booker T. Jones, bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn, superlative guitarist Steve Cropper and powerhouse drummer Al Jackson Jr.
TIME IS TIGHT collects most of the MGs' singles, plus unreleased goodies and live tracks; this three-disc set is the bedrock of Memphis ...

$17.49 As Marshall Wyatt's thorough liner notes explain in the accompanying 32-page booklet, the violin had a more prominent role in early blues than has often been supposed. Violins were far more apt to be played than guitars in the 19th century, and even when the blues began to be recorded in ...

| | Little Willie Littlefield Boogie Blues & Bounce - The Modern Recordings Vol. 2 CD (2005) (Import) United Kingdom
Takes One To Know One music CDs
$16.85 As the sequel to the previous Ace compilation Kat on the Keys, this gathers all the remaining singles that Little Willie Littlefield issued on Modern Records in the late '40s and early '50s. It also has eight previously unissued tracks -- most of them featuring only Littlefield's vocals and piano, without band accompaniment -- and a half dozen other recordings that were not issued while Littlefield was on Modern, surfacing for the first time on 1980's Ace LPs. Kat on the Keys is a better place to start a survey of Littlefield's Modern material, if only because it contains "It's Midnight (No Place to Go)," his sole hit for the label. This companion disc offers more secondary choices, and though it's still above average West Coast piano blues, there is a sameness to a high percentage of the cuts that limits its ...
