| | Marah Kids In Philly CD Marah Discography of CDs
On KIDS IN PHILLY, Philadelphia's Marah swings for the fences, taking the first of what would be several full-hearted if ultimately unsuccessful cracks at a crossover statement of purpose along the lines of Springsteen's THE WILD, THE INNOCENT & THE E STREET SHUFFLE. The group's shambolic bar band pathos is ideally suited to the rough sketches of Philadelphia street life that permeate the album, however. If the results fall somewhat short of the group's ambitions--Marah sounds like it's trying to conjure "Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)" throughout)--it's not for lack of effort.

Rolling Stone (6/8/00, pp.118-20) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "...A disciplined collection about fractured romance....music that's full of grand, Whitman-esque wonder and gnarly Lou Reed detail." Q (12/00, pp.126-7) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Delightful, surprisingly solid stuff." Magnet (4-5/00, pp.82-3) - "...Startlingly evocative, straight-from-the-heart lyrics....One of the most distinctive voices in whatever genre label you mistakenly choose to apply. Call it rock'n'roll and you can't go too far wrong." CMJ (3/20/00, p.3) - "...impressively raucous....a band with too much heart and not enough shame: They love classic rock, girls have dumped them, and they don't care if you know it....'a literate AC/DC'..." Mojo (Publisher) (11/00, p.112) - "...Truly impressive songsmiths whose smalltown lyrics and quirky delivery perfectly offset the singing Bielanko's embracing howl." | | Etienne DeRocher Etienne De Rocher CD (2006)
Kids In Philly CD music
$11.95 ‘‘Few new artists get the luxury of spending years making their first record. Perhaps more would if they could come out with an album as good as this one. It is a poised, confident CD, the work of someone who has already mastered his craft, not someone just starting out. Every tiny sound on the exquisite 12-song album is perfectly embedded in the carefully crafted music. It's a sound that is spare and open, yet dense and intricate at the same time. Think Nick Drake produced by Peter Gabriel."I walk the line between complete abstraction, dreaminess and stark reality," de Rocher says in the living room of the tidy West Berkeley duplex he shares with his wife and 2-month old son. A vinyl copy of Led Zeppelin's Houses of the Holy sits on his turntable -- the large collection of old albums belongs to his wife, he says -- and a bouquet of lilies on the coffee table scents the room. De Rocher grew up in Tuscaloosa, Ala. , where his parents were both French professors. His mother was French and his father a Michigan-raised Francophile, which is where he came by the name. He resents people suggesting it might be something he made up for the stage; he suffered too much grief over the name growing up in the South. He came to UC Berkeley in 1987 as a Physics honors student."Berkeley blew my mind," he says, "all the cool music, all the freaky culture. I lasted three semesters. I changed majors from physics to philosophy to art. I rolled downhill from the hard sciences."A four-track demo he recorded in the basement of the Oakland apartment building where he worked as custodian wound up in the hands of producer Glen Ballard, a record-industry heavyweight responsible for, among other successes, the multiplatinum debut of Alanis Morrisette. De Rocher almost signed with Capitol Records, but backed out at the last minute. "I got creeped ...

$15.95 "Jazzpanol: un disco de un sublime jazz clásico cantado en espanol con un intenso sabor mexicano" Atencion San Miguel"Jazzpanol: Original classic jazz in Spanish" The first time I heard Ruth Lara Vichules singing, I thought she was definitely born in Mexico, not only because of her impressive skills in the use of the Spanish language, but also because of the flavor she imparts in the words. But Ruth was born in the United States. She grew up in Arizona, close to Mexico, which explains her familiarity with this country. "Her haunting vocals are captivating in any lingua, but her current CD interpreting American jazz classics in Spanish and English reveals a mastery of jazz techniques, with her voice one of the finer featured instruments" (Latino Perspective Magazine, July 2007).Ruth's new CD, Jazzpanol, is a sublime production of classic jazz sung in Spanish and English, with an intense Mexican flavor. "I will use whatever language fits for me, translating and adapting and creating lyrics," she says. "I like to play with words and melody and their intersection with meaning."Just like herself, her music is multicultural and multilingual. Ruth has a delicious voice, a clear swing, and moves freely between English and Spanish, often during the same song, always conveying the meaning and feeling of the words, whether she is singing ...
