Faceless album
$15.18 Dream Theater's tenth long-player is about as dense and challenging as any album in the band's discography and emphasizes not only the virtuoso members' stupefying musicianship, but also their most aggressive and thoroughly metallic songwriting tendencies. The sixteen-minute opener "A Nightmare to Remember" quickly establishes this agenda via frequently thrash-paced staccato riffing, some of John Petrucci's most blistering guitar solos ever, and the return of drummer Mike Portnoy's syncopated growls, which provide contrast for singer James LaBrie's soaring melodic elegance. "The Count of Tuscany" is a heady prog-metal magnum opus brimming with more ideas, notes, and time changes over 19 minutes than most bands bother with over a ten album career. In fact, "Whither," a tender ballad and mere babe at five minutes in length, is the album's only concession to commerce. Black Clouds & Silver Linings, for all its abundantly positive qualities and minor but clear distinctions from prior efforts, is still an archetypal Dream Theater album; one that's unlikely to broaden their audience all that much, but is conversely guaranteed to ...
| | Voivod Infini CD (2009)
Faceless CD music
$11.98 Possibly more so than any other prior Voivod release, 2009's INFINITI is all about their late guitarist (and co-founding member) Piggy. Armed with guitar parts he recorded prior to his 2005 passing, the surviving Voivod members subsequently set out to finish off these final tracks. And musically, INFINITI really is a tribute of sorts to Voivod's fallen guitarist, as his playing propels many of the songs throughout the album. Back in the '80s when most metal guitarists were busy shredding away and/or trying to "out thrash" the next guy, Piggy's jazz-oid guitar playing was a breath of fresh air amongst all the standard shredding/noodling going on at the time. And it was an instantly recognizable, signature style he pursued until the very end, as evidenced by such tracks as "Earthache" ...

Faceless album
$16.95 WHEN DREAM & DAY UNITE, the major label debut from prog-metal act Dream Theater, includes the tracks "YTSE Jam" and "Only A Matter Of Time."
The official label debut album of the progressive metal band incorporated musical ideas from their predecessors like Yes, Genesis, Queensryche, Rush and the like and forged their own distinctive imprint. Players John Petrucci on guitar and drummer Mike Portnoy and bassist John Myung were joined by Charles Domenici on vocals. This would be Domenici's only foray with the group, replaced by James Labrie after this LP. Includes the ...

| | James Cotton Cut You Loose! CD (1968)
Faceless music CDs
$10.29 The second solo album by James Cotton, the one time harp disciple of Sonny Boy Williamson and former Muddy Waters sideman, is a loose, enjoyable mixture of urbane and gutbucket blues styles. Among the former, Cotton phrases like a sax player (but gets a sound like Little Walter) on Percy Mayfield's classy ballad "River's Invitation," while on Jimmy Reed's standard "Honest I Do" he goes (appropriately) all country harp squeaky.
Cotton's vocals have all the swagger necessary for the material. The fairly large back-up band here is fluent enough to pull off a slow, jazzy, ballad version of Little Richard's "Slippin' and Slidin'."

| | Bon Jovi Bounce CD (2002)
Faceless CD music
$12.69 "Misunderstood" was nominated for the 2004 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
While Jon Bon Jovi may not have much in common with the modern-day cowboys he writes of in his better-known songs, he and the band that bears his name are clearly the Comeback Kids. The mid-to-late-'90s found the band releasing lackluster fare, while 2002's BOUNCE brought Bon Jovi out of their slump. The album opens with pop metal bombast of a kind not heard since 1992's KEEP THE FAITH, as the band acknowledges the events of September 11th in "Undivided" and "Everyday." The crunchy, razor-sharp guitar playing and production on BOUNCE shines considerable light on Richie Sambora, who's playing gives any of today's newbie axemen a run for their money (especially on "Hook Me Up."). Building on that contemporary edge are collaborations with Andreas Carlsson (N Sync, Celion Dion) and longtime contributor Desmond Child. "Joey" is quintessential Bon Jovi storytelling, while "All About Loving You" and "Right Side Of Wrong" weigh in as requisite rock ballads.
Recorded at Sanctuary Sound II, New Jersey.
