Tom Jones's first release of all-new material since 1993's THE LEAD AND HOW TO SWING IT, 24 HOURS finds the ageless Welsh wonder working with contemporary songwriting and production team Future Cut, best known for their work on Lily Allen's ALRIGHT STILL. The works of Elliott Carter, Gunther Schuller and Charles Wuorinen represent the peak of later 20th century American composition. This recording presents songs by each composer set to such diverse poets as Walt Whitman, Hart Crane, Robert Frost, Dylan Thomas and 8th century Chinese poet, Li-Tai-Pei.
Elliott Carter is arguably the dean of American composers. His 'Frost Poems' were written between 1942 and 1945 and are notable for their simple (by Carter's standards) musical language and shifts in mood. Charles Wuorinen has ambitiously set Dylan Thomas's 'A Winter's Tale' in his own iconoclast style. A richly textured work, Wuorinen admirably captures the solitude of Thomas's text. Gunther Schuller's 'Six Early Songs' are flavored with touches of jazz and impressionism, hallmarks of his style.
Soprano Phyllis Bryn-Julson is one of the foremost performers of contemporary music and her interpretations are warm and musically secure, no small achievement in music of such complexity. Bryn-Julson receives brilliant accompaniment by pianist Mark Markham. This recording will fascinate adventurous listeners interested in the development of 20th century song.

It's hard to find an ensemble more overwhelming and majestic sounding than the Morman Tabernacle Choir. It's also impossible to find an ensemble with a longer-lived history: the choir has been in existence since 1847. The authority of such history is apparent on the group's 2005 release THEN SINGS MY SOUL.
As usual, religious themes are central, with an emphasis on songs of Christian praise and worship, including a version of "The Lord's Prayer." The choice of repertoire is intriguing, however, with a mix of traditional compositions, hymns from the 19th century, and selections from 20th century composers like John Rutter, Thomas Matthews, and Peter Christian Lutkin.
