(5 Customer Reviews)
Wholly original, the first and the best rap group to make the genre universally palatable. These Brooklyn boys succeed with a combination of tremendously exciting backgrounds, from straight riff metal (on 'Rhymin' & Stealin" and 'She's Crafty') to sample ('The New Style'). Having learnt their art by observing rather than participating while at NYU, they sound street-cred, even though some members are positively middle-class. The Volkswagen badge-stealing craze was unknowingly started by the band, who wore the pendant merely in order to mock the hippies who had worn the ban-the-bomb medallion. The rap album for people who think they don't like rap.
Additional personnel includes: Kerry King (guitar).
The Beastie Boys: Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz, Adam "MCA" Yauch, Mike "Mike D" Diamond (rap vocals).
Q (9/94, p.123) - 4 Stars - "...LICENSE TO ILL remains the world's only punk rock rap album, arguably superior to NEVER MIND THE BOLLOCKS...knowing that apathy and slovenliness were just around the corner..." Q (p.132) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[A]n album's worth of yelping hip hop and snarling guitar riffs....[The album] remains one of their very finest moments." Vibe (12/99, p.158) - Included in Vibe's 100 Essential Albums of the 20th Century Melody Maker (7/22/95, p.35) - Bloody Essential - "...There's lots of self-reverential bragging, more tenuous rhymes than are usually permitted by law and, most importantly of all, an unshakably glorious celebration of being alive....A surprisingly enduring classic." Licensed To Ill
$8.99 "Sabotage" was nominated for Best Hard Rock Performance in the 37th Annual Grammy Awards.
First time around they were written off as more of Presley's snot-nosed ancestors, shamelessly appropriating breaking black musical styles. Then, after creating an undisputable hip-hop masterpiece (1989's PAUL'S BOUTIQUE), they were tossed aside because they'd seemingly lost their commercial value. But now, having successfully made their "new style" over and debut it at Number 1, the only thing the Beastie Boys can be dissed about is their media over-exposure.
The phattening pleasures of ILL COMMUNICATION's 20 tracks come when they visit the old school--whether with DJ Hurricane on the wheels of steel in "Sure Shot," or freestyling ...

$12.49 HELLO NASTY won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Alternative Music Performance. "Intergalactic" won the 1999 Grammy for Best Rap Performance By A Duo Or Group.
On their fifth album and first proclamation in four years, the Beasties pledge allegiance to the next millennium while rocking out old-school stylee. Instead of pretentiously haphazard schizophrenia, Adrock, Mike D and MCA mold Run DMC boasts, Lee Perry dub freestyles, and introspective acoustic strumming into the best album-cum-mix-tape of the first half of '98. NASTY is the true successor to their sampledelic fantasia PAUL'S BOUTIQUE, as realized by craftsmen looking to do more than just get crazy with ...
| | Beastie Boys Check Your Head CD (1992)
Licensed To Ill
$9.49 Some albums define an era, a place, a certain time in one's life; they exist as soundtracks for our memories, bringing that extra scent of poignancy to them. CHECK YOUR HEAD practically defined the summer of 1992 for those who were wary of the mainstreaming of rap and somewhat bored by the insurgency of grunge. By holding their heads ...
