Using their southern-flavored soul to bring back true R&B, Playa prove that talent is still a necessity. Not watered down with guest rappers or sampled tracks, CHEERS 2 YOU is the debut album from Smokey, Static & Black, who bring a wealth of talent to their musical introduction. Playa's influences are discernible with one listen to CHEERS 2 YOU. With their Stevie Wonder-ish harmonies, the trio deliver smooth sounds and gospel-inspired vocals. With production by Timbaland, CHEERS 2 YOU is a new-school project guaranteed to stir up some old-school feelings.
Additional personnel includes: Foxy Brown (vocals); Timbaland (various instruments); Bill Petaway (guitar); Keri Cooper (keyboards); Derick "D-Man" McElveen (programming); Magoo, Missy Elliot, Aaliyah.
Producers: Smokey, Timbaland, James E. Jones.
Engineers: Jimmy Douglass, Steve Sola, Doug, Rob Paustian, Conley Abrams.
Playa: Static, Smokey, Black.
The Source (3/98, p.198) - "...As far as sonic foreplay goes, Playa's got all the right moves....There is a subtlety in their sound that is much sexier than a lot of R&B groups out there who think talkin' dirty is the only way to get to a girl's heart..." Rap Pages (3/98, p.112) - "...Playa has come correct with a mellosmoothe vibe straight out of the '70's....Playa's delivery is seasoned and professional, ensuring phenomenal success if they maintain their obvious allegiance to perfection..." THEY HAVE GREAT TALENT AND I WOULD BY A MILLION OF COPIES OF THEIR FIRST ALBUM CHEERS TO YOU.MY BOYFRIEND USED TO SING THAT TO ME WHEN I WAS IN THE 7TH GRADE BACK IN 1998. "Excellent R&B Material" If you like R&B with a similar ol'school influence produced by Timberland circa '98 at it's best then this album is for you. Playa can sing, have raw talent, & songwriting skill. Song's like "All The Way", "I-65", "Top of The World", "One Man Woman", "Buggin' Over You", & "Together" along with others are sure to satisfy. There are 3 interludes total which 2 of them include Magoo rapping, but not on the 1 Gospel interlude. Even though Playa are still around but have'nt released a follow-up album yet since this album was made I'm sure it will be "Off The Map". Overall this CD is one that you can play from the beginning to the end & it's a must have. A+++ Submitted by LARRY (OHIO) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
cool, with a laid-back vibe... I only wish i'd purchase this disc alot sooner! Very slick, and uniquely old-school. Timberland did a nice job producing this cd. Wouldn't mind seeing playa make a comeback!! Submitted by a reviewer (michigan) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
