Better than Good
This album is his best IMO. I am really into neo-classical style heavy metal, and now I'm huge fan of Jazz/Fusion. 16th Notes are plenty in this one. Jaco Pastorius is a guest musician on this album (bass). Great CD. Favorite Track: The Wizard (this song got me hooked on Al DiMeola)

A CLASSIC !
Can't believe no-one else has reviewed this gem.People were freaked out when this album first appeared, and Al established himself as one of the great fusion players with his blistering picking style. Still sounds great today, with some fabulous guest performances augmenting Al's stellar guitar work. The first of many great solo albums by a fusion legend .

Great forgotten first work by Al D.
Really nice first album by Al DiMeola.
Some other good musicians played on it too, like Jaco Pastorius on bass.

Still Mindblowing
I was a 16 y/o just starting out guitar player when somebody recommended this LP to me. I plunked down my $4 or so and picked it. It completely changed my perspective on what could be done on guitar and where it could go (Clapton and Blackmore had inspired me to play and I was heavy into Rory Gallagher and Tommy bolin at the time - Bolin's Teaser, Billy Cobham's Spectrum and Alphonse Mouzon's Mind Transplant are good counterpoints to this CD).
There's lots of good stuff here, the aforementioned "The Wizard" and the title track. "Short Tales of the Black Forest" (a duet with Chick Corea) is also highly recommended.
Fusion can be a polarizing style for many when it comes to Jazz, but if you are fundamentally a Rock player, Fusion is good place to start. Just make sure you do your homework and work your backwards from here (I would start with Mahavishnu Orchestra's Inner Mounting Flame and Tony Williams Lifetime then move on to Miles Davis's Bitches Brew and the like). It's a lifetime journey and you will discover some of the greatest music ever laid down in the process.
