Music snobs love to deride Toto as exemplars of MOR, radio-ready commercial product, a criticism not entirely off the mark for a supergroup formed by high-profile studio musicians intent on mixing pop styles into a glossy, accessible package. But Toto weren't all chops and no substance, especially when it came to writing memorable pop songs, as one listen to their hugely successful 1978 self-titled debut will attest. Whether squeezing nursery rhymes into smooth grooves ("Georgy Porgy"), mixing funky verses with anthemic choruses ("I'll Supply the Love"), or honing their focus to unleash some genuine rock & roll here and there (the hit single "Hold the Line"), Toto crafted smart hooks and made them stick, wrapping them in a guitar/keys-heavy sound that straddled soft rock, hard rock, and lite R&B. Consequently, their debut made significant strides in sales and radio play. In fact, anyone within earshot of a radio in the '70s will recognize the aforementioned mentioned songs, and those who don't will find TOTO to be a polished, well-crafted pop-rock period piece. It's as easy to see why radio listeners loved Toto as it is to see why critics hated them. Toto's rock-studio chops allowed them to play any current pop style at the drop of a hi-hat: one minute prog rock, the next hard rock, the next funky R&B. It all sounded great, but it also implied that music-making took craft rather than inspiration and that the musical barriers critics like to erect were arbitrary. Then, too, Toto's timing couldn't have been much worse. They rode in during the middle of punk/new wave with its D.I.Y. aesthetic, and their sheer competence was an affront. Of course, there's always been an alternate history of popular music not available to rock critics (it's written in record stores and concert halls and on the radio), and in that story, Toto was a smash. Singles like "I'll Supply the Love" and "Georgy Porgy" (featuring Cheryl Lynn) made the charts, and "Hold the Line" hit the Top Ten and went gold. The members of Toto had already influenced the course of '70s popular music by playing on half the albums that came out of L.A. All they were doing with this album was going public. ~ William Ruhlmann

Great Album Although this album is over 20 years old, the music doesn't get old. Childs Anthem and Gorgy Porgy are classsics! Submitted by a reviewer (Lafayette, IN) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Awesome One of the best albums of the 70's. Great writing and flawless musicianship, which you would expect with the pedigree of these guys. Lots of highlights, including all of "Girl Goodbye", which boasts incredible drumming from Jeff Porcaro and a great solo from 'Luke'. Plenty of keyboard heroics as well.
There is not a bad song on this album, "You are the flower" probably suffering from being the most dated. Submitted by Woody (Kiama, NSW, Australia) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Toto
$9.55 Personnel: Tom Araya (vocals); Jeff Hanneman, Kerry King (guitar); Dave Lombardo (drums). Audio Mixer: Greg Fidelman. Editor: Dan Monti. Photographer: Andrew Stewart. Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's vocals mixed relatively dry and upfront, giving the album a bracing, fist-to-the-face force. Jackhammer tracks such as "Hate Worldwide" and "Psychopathy Red" are short, no muss-no fuss blasts of double kick drum, minor key-riffing fury, with an unrelenting intensity that requires little in the way of sonic or textural variation. The title track, on the other hand, is a somewhat slower dose of classic chugga-chugga head-banging which showcases Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman's shrieking, emotive guitar work. Remaining true to Slayer's defiantly old school sound, WORLD PAINTED BLOOD carried the torch for pure thrash. There will no doubt be a lot of hoopla concerning the name Slayer have chosen for World Painted Blood. In many ways, it could have been called Reign in Blood Revisited. But the word "revisited " is the key. Some compositions on this new recording have more of the band's early-style melody in them, with lightning flare-up riffs between verses; quick, unexpected guitar pyrotechnics; and blastbeat power drumming from Dave Lombardo (the band's original drummer who returned to the lineup for 2006's Christ Illusion) pushing it all into the red. But there are mannerisms and strategies from the band's later albums at work as well -- even if they are unconsciously employed. Christ Illusion reached deep into Slayer's old bag of tricks to reorient themselves to m

| | Rickie Lee Jones Balm In Gilead CD (2009)
Toto
$14.30 Lyricist: Rickie Lee Jones. Audio Mixer: Rob Schnapf. Photographer: Rickie Lee Jones. Captain Beefheart was known to playfully admonish fans shouting out requests at his shows by saying, "You know I'm gonna do exactly what I want." No one has documented Rickie Lee Jones saying the same thing, but in the course of a recording career that's just entered its third decade, she's made it clear that she shares the same philosophy, and she's bravely followed her muse wherever it chooses to go, rather than rehashing the sound and style of RICCKIE LEE JONES and PIRATES, the acclaimed early recordings which made her a star. Jones certainly hasn't lost her love for the blues and jazz flavors that dominated her best-known work, but on 2009's BALM IN GILEAD, there's significantly less flash and swagger in her music; instead, these performances speak of an intimacy and warmth that befits the lyrics, which concern themselves with love, family, friendship, and the stuff that makes up everyday lives. Jones duets with Vic Chesnutt on two numbers, the country-influenced weeper "Remember Me" and a spectral gospel variant, "His Jeweled Floor" (which also features Victoria Williams), and these two gloriously idiosyncratic talents bring out the best in one another, discovering a compelling mystery in their rural inflections that's ...
| | Asia Astra CD (1986)
Toto
$5.25 Asia: John Wetton (vocals, bass); Mandy Meyer (guitar); Geoff Downes (keyboards); Carl Palmer (drums). Asia was always a bland, derivative excuse for a dinosaur rock band, but when their debut album came out in 1982 and sold three million copies, they seemed like a repudiation of the new wave movement, the pop music equivalent of the Reagan revolution in politics. Like Ronnie, however, Asia ran out of gas around mid-decade. True, they were still constructing keyboard-dominated, heroic-voiced arena pop, but suddenly nobody cared anymore, or at least not enough customers to vault them into the Top Ten, and for this kind of band, it's platinum or don't bother. So, first, guitarist Steve Howe took his marbles and went home to Yes, and then the rest of the band packed it in, too. They'd be back, of course, when the money was right. ~ William Ruhlmann Asia was always a bland, derivative excuse for a dinosaur rock band, but when their debut album came out in 1982 and sold three million copies, they seemed like a repudiation of the new wave movement, ...

| | Very Best Of The Stray Cats: Rumble In Brixton CDs (2004)
Toto
$13.45 2cds.1st Official Live Release W/ 1 Brand New Studio Track.
Stray Cats: Lee Rocker (bass instrument); Slim Jim Phantom, Brian Setzer. Personnel: Brian Setzer (vocals, guitar); Lee Rocker (vocals, background vocals); Slim Jim Phantom (drums, background vocals). Audio Mixer: John Holbrook. Liner Note Author: Tommy Maguire. Recording information: Brixton; The Village Recorder. Illustrator: Vince Ray. Photographers: Boris Baggs; Tommy Maguire. This rather short double-disc package documents the British dates of the re-formed 2004 Stray Cats, specifically one show in Brixton. The 22-song set includes all of their big hits, a handful of logical if intriguing covers ("Ubangi Stomp," "My Baby Left Me," "That's All Right," "Good Rockin' Tonight," and "Twenty Flight Rock"), and even a new studio track, the trio's first original composition in a decade. Although the band hadn't played together in a while, all of the members have stayed busy and their chops are as sharp -- if not sharper -- than in the old days. Additionally, England is where they first made a popular splash, so they are obviously thrilled to be back on their old stomping grounds, adding to the edgy sense of excitement in the performance. Most of these concert renditions are hotter and hence ...

| | Harry Lookofsky Stringsville CD (2006)
Toto
$9.95 Personnel: Harry Lookofsky (violin, tenor violin, viola); Bob Brookmeyer (trombone); Hank Jones (piano); Elvin Jones (drums). Liner Note Author: Gary Kramer. Arrangers: Hank Jones ; Bob Brookmeyer. Stringsville challenges the essential rules and definitions of bebop like few records before or since -- not only does Harry Lookofsky wield as his weapons violins and violas, but his music hinges as much on technological innovation as it does on technical prowess. Lookofsky transcends contemporaries like Stuff Smith and Stéphane Grappelli for sheer artistry, conjuring remarkably athletic solos rooted in the traditions of classical music but with the creative phrasing and rhythmic intensity of bop -- his performances boast a dark, dramatic edge that pushes the violin into a bold new dimension. No less revelatory is Lookofsky's mastery of tape manipulation: ...
