Accept includes: Udo Dirkschneider (vocals); Hermann Frank Jr., Wolf Hoffman (guitar); Peter Baltes (bass); Stefan Kaufmann (drums). Personnel: Udo Dirkschneider (vocals); Jörg Fischer (guitar); Stefan Kaufmann (drums). Audio Mixer: Michael Wagener. Recording information: Dierks Studios, Cologne, Germany (03/1982-06/1982). Author: Udo Dirkschneider. Photographer: Stefan Bohle. Unknown Contributor Role: Herman Frank. In the rankings of heavy metal heroes, Accept are too often swept aside, but they were key in the creation of thrash and speed metal, two of the most dominant subgenres of the 1980s and beyond. Ample evidence for their contribution is presented on their fourth album, 1982's RESTLESS AND WILD. Opener "Fast as a Shark" is indeed that, racing full force with some of the fastest drumming to be heard up to that point. The rest of the album isn't nearly as juiced up, but features an undeniably tough metallic crunch that was virtually unmatched at the time. "Ahead of the Pack" is a spiked wristband anthem, perfect for shaking the foundations of a European soccer stadium, "Neon Nights" oozes after-dark danger, and "Flash Rockin' Man" prefigures Motley Crüe by several years. BALLS TO THE WALL may be their calling card, but RESTLESS AND WILD is Accept in peak form. Accept's creative breakthrough, 1983's Restless and Wild, begins with one of the most unexpected, surprising, and hilarious mock intros ever recorded. Untold thousands no doubt furrowed their brows in confusion at the perky German folk song emanating from their speakers, only to be rudely interrupted by a scratching needle and Udo Dirkschneider's incomparable shriek, as the band launch themselves into the stunning violence of "Fast as a Shark." Not just a thrilling, light-speed juggernaut, the song was probably the last thrash metal prototype waxed in the pre-thrash era (officially inaugurated by Metallica's Kill 'Em All a few months later). Though nowhere near as frenetic, the title track and "Ahead of the Pack" are just as fierce, and despite a sudden stumble with the mediocre "Shake Your Heads" (an overtly cheesy, Judas Priest-style metal anthem, and the album's only stinker), the dramatic "Neon Nights" ends side one on the upswing once again. As for the album's second half, it's pretty much beyond reproach. Introduced by the solid "Get Ready" (another nod to Priest with its "Living After Midnight"-inspired drum intro), it builds from strength to strength with increasingly mature and melodic (though lyrically obscure) tracks such as "Flash Rockin' Man," "Don't Go Stealing My Soul Away," and the colossal "Princess of the Dawn." The latter closes the album as it began, in unexpected fashion, when its extended outro is abruptly interrupted mid-verse. The bottom line here is that this, like its successor Balls to the Wall, is an essential heavy metal album, and any fan worth his salt should own them both. But for the sake of first-time visitors, Restless and Wild is the slightly grittier, less melodic of the two. Whichever you chose, you can only win. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia Accept Restless And Wild Songs | 1. | Fast as a Shark | $0.99 | |

Restless And Wild
$11.99 Personnel: Ilya Toshinsky (acoustic guitar, banjo); Steven Sheehan (acoustic guitar); Jerry McPherson, Kenny Greenberg, Brent Mason (electric guitar); Paul Franklin (dobro); Randy Scruggs (banjo); Aubrey Haynie (mandolin, fiddle); John Catchings, Kristin Wilkinson, Mary Kathryn Van Osdale, David Angell (strings); Dave Koz (saxophone); Steve Nathan (piano, keyboards); Charles Judge (synthesizer, programming); Chris McHugh (drums); Jim Hoke (Jew's harp); Eric Darken, Arthur Thompson (percussion); Angela Primm, Perry Coleman, Gayle Mayes (background vocals). Audio Mixer: Mills Logan. With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. As superb and striking as it is, it's not necessarily a good keystone for the rest of the record, which does have a few tougher numbers that pick up on the lean, mean vibe of 2008's THAT DON'T MAKE ME A BAD GUY -- "Every Dog Has Its Day," the ...
| | Metallica - S&M With The San Francisco Symphony Orchestra DVDs (1999) Elektra
Restless And Wild
$22.75 In this rare and ground breaking performance, hugely popular heavy metal band Metallica is accompanied by the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra with Michael Kamen conducting. The pairing of the full and lush-sounding symphony with the guitar-driven virtuosity works well, giving way for a deeper, more subtle appreciation of Metallica's well-constructed, impressively written music. This music ...
| | Deep Purple In Rock CD (1970) Gold
Restless And Wild
$20.29 Deep Purple: Ian Gillan (vocals); Ritchie Blackmore (guitar); Jon Lord (keyboards); Roger Glover (bass); Ian Paice (drums). Engineers: Martin Birch, Andy Knight, Phillip McDonald. After satisfying all of their classical music kinks with keyboard player Jon Lord's overblown Concerto for Group and Orchestra, Deep Purple's soon to be classic Mark II version made its proper debut and established the sonic blueprint that would immortalize this lineup of the band on 1970's awesome In Rock. The cacophony of sound (spearheaded by Ritchie Blackmore's blistering guitar solo) introducing opener "Speed King" made it immediately obvious that the band was no longer fooling around, but the slightly less intense "Bloodsucker" did afford stunned listeners a chance to catch their breaths before the band launched into the album's epic, ten-minute tour de force, "Child in Time." In what still stands as arguably his single greatest performance, singer Ian Gillan led his bandmates on a series of hypnotizing crescendos, from the song's gentle beginning through to its ear-shattering climax and then back again for an even more intense encore that brought the original vinyl album's seismic first side to a close. Side two opened with the searing power chords of "Flight of the Rat" -- another example of the band's new take-no-prisoners ...

Nektar: Roye Albrighton (vocals, guitar); Carmine Rojas (keyboards, bass); Allan "Taft" Freeman (keyboards); David Prater (drums, background vocals). Recorded at Briar Brook Studios, Bernardville, New Jersey in 1980. The 1980s are well known in rock music circles as the era of hair metal, that offshoot of the thunderous variant of hard rock that always seemed more concerned with image than substance. Interestingly enough, this release from the very beginning of that era features an opening cut that feels much of the influence of that metallic genre. Do not expect this disc to come across as another Remember the Future or Tab in the Ocean. Indeed, don't even expect to hear Magic Is a Child here. The truth of the music presented on the CD is that it is a far more pop-oriented sound than Nektar ever presented before. The cuts are rather short and catchy. The thing is, as un-progressive rock as the somewhat legendary prog group made with this one, there is still some strong material presented. The one factor that truly ...
