1986's BALANCE OF POWER, the last ELO album to feature Jeff Lynne--the rest of the group re-convened as ELO Part II in the late '90s with cult-fave singer/guitarist Parthenon Huxley replacing Lynne--looks at first like a dubious attempt at '80s-style modernization. The cliched, dated graphics--and keyboard player Richard Tandy's red-flag credit for "programming"--notwithstanding, this is a fine example of Lynne's '80s work. The opening "Heaven Only Knows" is a catchy tune with Lynne's trademark overdubbed Beatlesque harmonies that would have fit in well on OUT OF THE BLUE or DISCOVERY. The rest of the album is less immediately enthralling, but that's due to the slightly antiseptic, MIDI-heavy production, not the caliber of the songs. Listening past the surfaces reveals these songs to be a solid set of tunes well in Lynne's tradition of melodic pop.

All tracks have been digitally remastered.

Electric Light Orchestra: Jeff Lynne (vocals, guitar, piano, keyboards, bass); Richard Tandy (piano, keyboards); Bev Bevan (drums, percussion).

Additional personnel: Christian Shnieder (saxophone).

4 stars An underrated album
This album really is good from start to finish. Some of the electronic drums and keyboard effects are very "80's" sounding, but overall this is a great album. My personal favorites are "Calling America" (one of those tunes I can listen to over and over), "So Serious", "Send It", and the very sad "Getting To The Point". There are a few weaker tunes, but overall a very good, very listenable album.

4 stars ELO Swansong
The last ELO album from the Jeff Lynne years, 'Balance of Power' has some very poignant moments and some good rocking songs. 'Heaven Only Knows', "So Serious' and 'Getting To The Point' are tracks which really point out how weary Lynne was with the whole ELO experience, and the lyrics are rather sad. 'Calling America' is a classic ELO single; such a shame it came at the end of the band's first career. Not really indicative of ELO's music as a whole, but still worthwhile

4 stars POP GEM!
SERIOUS MUSIC WAS NOT JEFF LYNNS' FORTE BUT HEY POP MUSIC, BY ITS DEFINITION, IS NOT ON PAR WITH ANY CLASSIC COMPOSER. THIS IS A FUN SPIN OF POP MUSIC. I BOUGHT THIS ALBUM WHEN IT WAS ORIGINALLY RELEASED. I HAD THE CASSETTE VERSION AND PLAYED THE HELL OUT OF IT IN MY CORVETTE. GREAT TIMES. THIS WILL BRING YOU BACK TO THOSE TIMES, IT DID FOR ME. JAPANESE VERSION IS NOT THAT GREAT, REALLY. I'M SURE REGULAR US VERSION WOULD BE FINE.

5 stars Great remastering job !
Greatly overlooked ELO CD -- "Calling America" and "So Serious" are top-notch tracks. Pick up this CD -- it really sounds amazing.
