| | Wynton Marsalis Live At Blues Alley CD Wynton Marsalis Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Recorded in New Orleans in 1987, this two-disc live set by the Wynton Marsalis Quartet (featuring the trumpeter's brother Delfeayo) shows that Marsalis is more inventive and less conservative than his detractors claim. Weaving multiple interludes of the tunes "Knozz-Moe-King" and "Juan" around bebop-flavored originals like "Chambers of Tain" and oddly-accented reinterpretations of standards like "Cherokee" and "Autumn Leaves," Marsalis and cohorts obviously hold jazz traditions in the highest respect. Nevertheless, Marsalis' uncommonly graceful, classically-tinged trumpet work is unique and inspired. LIVE AT BLUES ALLEY is one of Wynton Marsalis' best works.
Recorded live at Blues Alley, Washington D.C. on December 19 & 20, 1986. Includes liner notes by Stanley Crouch.
Personnel: Wynton Marsalis (trumpet); Marcus Roberts (piano); Robert Leslie Hurst III (bass); Jeff "Tain" Watts (drums).

Live At Blues Alley album
$12.39 After a quarter century apart, the core line-up of the jazz quartet Return to Forever--Chick Corea, Lenny White, Stanley Clark, and Al Di Meola--reunited for a world tour in 2008. This remarkable concert film captures the foursome on stage at Montreux, playing bewitching renditions of "Vulcan Worlds," "Sorceress," "Romantic Warrior," and many others.
The band was at the forefront of jazz/rock fusion in the 70s and were formed by a former Miles Davis sideman, in this case the great Chick Corea. Return ...
| | Frank Sinatra Nothing But The Best CD (2008) Remastered
Live At Blues Alley CD music
$15.39 "The Chairman of the Board" died in May of 1998, yet his music sounds as vital and relevant today as ever. Released on the 10th anniversary of his death--in coordination with a slew of DVD releases commemorating the singer's acting career as well as an official U.S. Postal Service stamp--NOTHING BUT THE BEST provides an excellent look at Sinatra's tenure at the Reprise label. Among the album's 22 vintage cuts are classics such as "The Way You Look Tonight," "Luck Be a Lady," "Strangers in the Night," and "My Way." The disc also contains a bonus track in the previously unreleased recording of "Body and Soul." Diehard Sinatra fans will likely own most ...
| | Thelonious Monk At Carnegie Hall CD (2005)
Live At Blues Alley music CDs
$13.75 On paper it seems as if such titanic and distinctive musical personalities as Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane might not mix very well, but this stellar set, recorded live at Carnegie Hall in 1957, plays almost like a blissful extended duet between the two (with support from a sensitive yet hard-swinging bassist and drummer). The opener, "Monk's Mood," for example, features the composer/pianist's typically brilliant, idiosyncratic playing, while Coltrane floats over the top in the most lyrical of modes. Monk, in particular, is a master of tension-and-release tunefulness, creating rhythmic and harmonic intricacies that seem to spur Coltrane's saxophone exploration to new heights.
The quartet shines on ballads ("Sweet and Lovely"), but the leaders display their best chemistry ...

| | Herb Alpert S.R.O. CD (1966) Remastered; Special Edition
Live At Blues Alley CD music
$9.99 By late 1966, it seemed as if every TV commercial and every pop arranger had latched onto the Herb Alpert "Ameriachi" sound -- at which point the resourceful originator of that sound began to pare it down and loosen it up a bit. S.R.O. (Standing Room Only), referring to the Tijuana Brass' string of sold-out concerts, is an accurate title, for this LP is about a seven-piece band loaded with experienced jazzers who groove and swing together to a greater degree than on their previous albums. Sure, the arrangements are very tightly knit and don't allow much room for spontaneity, but they still sound fresh and uninhibited, and Alpert often allows the flavor of jazz to come through more clearly. Indeed, two of the album's three hit singles, "The Work Song" and "Flamingo," are jazz tunes -- the former nervous and driving, the latter joyously kicking -- and the third, "Mame," gets a nifty Dixieland treatment a la Louis Armstrong, with Alpert singing one verse. The sleeping gem of the record is guitarist John Pisano's "Freight Train Joe," a wistfully evocative tune that won't quit the memory, and the mournful Alpert/Pisano/Nick Ceroli tune "For Carlos" later became Wes Montgomery's "Wind Song." Though S.R.O. only went to number two on the LP charts, Alpert's creativity and popularity were still peaking. ~ Richard S. Ginell

| | Steve Kirwan Blame It On My Heart CD (2006)
Live At Blues Alley music CDs
$11.49 Hailed as a 'topnotch performer' by Daily Variety's Joel Hirschhorn, Steve Kirwan breathes a certain truth and honesty into any music and lyric set before him. Easily delivering vocal performances with an uncommon depth and range, he charms listeners, creating a renewed intimacy between audience and artist. In small rooms, jazz clubs or on a theatre stage, Steve's nuance, timing and unabashed connection to the music draws the audience in.It was the late Rosemary Clooney who taught Steve to live each song in the moment. Both performing on stage and recording with her, he learned first-hand how to give songs life, vibrancy and clarity. 'Songs are written about a single moment in time - a thought that comes to your mind of an experience or memory. I think of each song I sing as a scene from a play,' he once said. As Steve developed his own contemporary style, he sought to retain deep roots in the old school tradition and acknowledges teachers and cabaret stars like Julie Wilson, Marilyn Lovell, Margaret Whiting and Kay Starr for their influence. The debut of BLAME IT ON MY HEART was released after a period of time Steve spent writing songs about his life's experiences. "I had found another way to express myself in addition to singing", he says. Many of these songs were written with his then writing partner, Ken Klar. 'Mr. Play It Safe', 'Someday I'll Find You', 'Lover's Lament', 'You Were Mine', 'Sarah', 'Blame It On My Heart', 'How Could You Walk Away' and 'Grace Street' were all written with Klar. Also included is a beautiful piano/vocal arrangement of Don McLean's 'Vincent' arranged by Dan Wells and Stephen Bishop's 'Separate Lives' arranged by Bill Schneider. A singer/songwriter and graduate of the prestigious Eugene O'Neill Theatre Cabaret Symposium, Steve has over 80 recordings to his credit and has shared the microphone with both classic and contemporary artists. He was a featured soloist with the twice Grammy® ...
