| | Wynton Marsalis Live At Blues Alley CD Wynton Marsalis Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
Recorded in New Orleans in 1987, this two-disc live set by the Wynton Marsalis Quartet (featuring the trumpeter's brother Delfeayo) shows that Marsalis is more inventive and less conservative than his detractors claim. Weaving multiple interludes ... Full Descriptionof the tunes "Knozz-Moe-King" and "Juan" around bebop-flavored originals like "Chambers of Tain" and oddly-accented reinterpretations of standards like "Cherokee" and "Autumn Leaves," Marsalis and cohorts obviously hold jazz traditions in the highest respect. Nevertheless, Marsalis' uncommonly graceful, classically-tinged trumpet work is unique and inspired. LIVE AT BLUES ALLEY is one of Wynton Marsalis' best works.
Recorded live at Blues Alley, Washington D.C. on December 19 & 20, 1986. Includes liner notes by Stanley Crouch.
Personnel: Wynton Marsalis (trumpet); Marcus Roberts (piano); Robert Leslie Hurst III (bass); Jeff "Tain" Watts (drums).

Live At Blues Alley album
$12.39 After a quarter century apart, the core line-up of the jazz quartet Return to Forever--Chick Corea, Lenny White, Stanley Clark, and Al Di Meola--reunited for a world tour in 2008. This remarkable concert film captures the foursome on stage at Montreux, playing bewitching renditions of "Vulcan Worlds," "Sorceress," "Romantic Warrior," and many others.
The band was at the forefront of jazz/rock fusion in the 70s and were formed by a former Miles Davis sideman, in this case the great Chick Corea. Return To Forever hit their commercial and artistic peak with a string of albums in the mid-seventies featuring the line-up of Chick Corea on keyboards, Stanley Clarke on bass, Al Di Meola on guitar and Lenny White on drums. In 2008 this ...
| | Christian McBride Kind Of Brown CD (2009)
Live At Blues Alley CD music
$13.84 One might assume that bassist Christian McBride's KIND OF BROWN would be a tribute to Ray Brown. In fact, this music bears a strong resemblance to the late-'60s to mid-'70s Blue Note recordings of the legendary Bobby Hutcherson-Harold Land quintet. A new discovery in vibraphonist Warren Wolf, Jr., teamed with veteran saxophonist Steve Wilson, the wonderful pianist Eric Reed, and drummer Carl Allen makes McBride's quintet Inside Straight one of the more melodically tuneful and harmonically focused contemporary ensembles now playing. McBride is almost an equal in this company, putting aside his furious note playing for a more democratic role in an extraordinarily balanced small combo. The similarities to the Hutcherson-Land group are unmistakable, from the tick-tock rhythm and melodic line similar to Hutch and Herbie Hancock's classic composition "Blow Up" on "Brother Mister" to the steady swinger "Rainbow Wheel" and "Pursuit of Peace," with its probing ...
| | Jerry Bergonzi Simply Put CD (2009)
Live At Blues Alley music CDs
$13.58 Jerry Bergonzi has long been regarded as a top-flight tenor saxophonist among his peers and this session finds him in top form, playing with a seasoned, familiar rhythm section, consisting of pianist Bruce Barth, bassist Dave Santoro, and drummer Andrea Michelutti. Seven of the 10 tracks are originals by the leader, starting with the tense, somewhat dark cooker "Mr. MB," dedicated to the late tenorist Michael Brecker. Bergonzi then switches to soprano for his exotic "Malaga." Further on, "Transphybian" is an unusual blues that doesn't follow the predicted path, while "Crossing the Naeff" is a haunting ballad duet with Barth. Bergonzi's settings of standards are all refreshing. ...

| | David Sanborn - Live At Montreux 1984 DVD (2008) DTS Sound
Live At Blues Alley album
$12.39 David Sanborn has played the Montreux Jazz Festival many times over, but this amazing 1984 performance captures the sax virtuoso in top form, playing in support of his Grammy-winning album STRAIGHT TO THE HEART. Featuring a guest appearance by Rickie Lee Jones, the engaging set includes the songs "Hideaway," "Rush Hour," and "Smile."
Sanborn has been a frequent visitor to the Montreux Jazz Festival, either headlining in his own right, as a sideman or as part of 90s 'super group' Legends. This DVD focuses ...
| | Brass Ecstasy Spirit Moves CD (2009)
Live At Blues Alley CD music
$14.10 SPIRIT MOVES is another one of the eclectic contemporary musician Dave Douglas's fertile side-projects. This time the trumpeter has put together a brass ensemble--including trombone, French horn, tuba, and drums--called appropriately enough Brass Ecstasy. And while the music has a vaguely New Orleans second-line aspect (deliberately so on the tribute "Bowie," for Lester not David, that is), Douglas ranges far and wide in his choice of material, opening with Rufus Wainwright's "This Love Affair" and closing with Hank Williams's "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry." In between there are two other tributes to trumpet masters--the moody "Rava," for Enrico the contemporary Italian player, and the hiply melodic "Fats," as in the bebop great Fats Navarro. Despite the preponderance of horns, Douglas's writing is clear, witty, and accessible--like Carla Bley on a non-satirical day. Praise should also go to the lone non-brassman, drummer Nasheet Waits, who herds the ensemble along ...
| | Bishop Paul S Morton Cry Your Last Tear CD (2008)
Live At Blues Alley music CDs
$13.59 With a powerful sense of purpose, Bishop Paul S. Morton leads the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship Mass Choir (how's that for a mouthful?) as they deliver tunes in the old-school gospel-choir mode as well as more contemporary praise-and-worship songs. Bishop Morton's own impassioned vocals spur on ...
| | Stan Getz Dynasty CDs (1971) Remastered; Digipak
Live At Blues Alley songs
$15.99 Originally released in 1971, DYNASTY is a double-CD that finds Stan Getz really stretching out in a quartet setting. Though highly melodic and restrained in the usual Getz style, these tunes feature plenty of advanced, post-bop playing and challenging improvisation. Flanked by drummer Bernard Lubat, ...
