Recorded in New Orleans in 1987, this two-disc live set by the Wynton Marsalis Quartet (featuring the trumpeter's brother Delfeayo) shows that Marsalis is more inventive and less conservative than his detractors claim. Weaving multiple interludes ... Full Descriptionof the tunes "Knozz-Moe-King" and "Juan" around bebop-flavored originals like "Chambers of Tain" and oddly-accented reinterpretations of standards like "Cherokee" and "Autumn Leaves," Marsalis and cohorts obviously hold jazz traditions in the highest respect. Nevertheless, Marsalis' uncommonly graceful, classically-tinged trumpet work is unique and inspired. LIVE AT BLUES ALLEY is one of Wynton Marsalis' best works.
Recorded live at Blues Alley, Washington D.C. on December 19 & 20, 1986. Includes liner notes by Stanley Crouch.
Personnel: Wynton Marsalis (trumpet); Marcus Roberts (piano); Robert Leslie Hurst III (bass); Jeff "Tain" Watts (drums).

Live At Blues Alley album
$13.19 From his late 1960s days as the lead singer of the Steve Miller Band, Boz Scaggs has always had an undercurrent of jazz influence in his phrasing. Therefore, SPEAK LOW should come as no surprise to longtime fans. No mere raid on the Great American Songbook in the manner of Rod Stewart's adult contemporary albums, SPEAK LOW is a personal, canny follow-up to 2003's collection of standards, BUT BEAUTIFUL. These 12 tracks offer less familiar tracks like Duke Ellington's "Do Nothing Till You Hear From Me" and Chet Baker's "She Was Too Good To Me," given abstract, cerebral arrangements in the manner of 1950s Gil Evans charts.
Programmer: Steve Rodby.
Audio Mixers: Danny Kopelson; Michael Rodriguez .
Audio Remasterer: Bob Ludwig.

| | Frank Sinatra Nothing But The Best CD (2008) Remastered
Live At Blues Alley music CDs
$15.09 "The Chairman of the Board" died in May of 1998, yet his music sounds as vital and relevant today as ever. Released on the 10th anniversary of his death--in coordination with a slew of DVD releases commemorating the singer's acting career as well as an official U.S. Postal Service stamp--NOTHING BUT THE BEST provides an excellent look at Sinatra's tenure at the Reprise label. Among the album's 22 vintage cuts are classics such as "The Way You Look Tonight," "Luck Be a Lady," "Strangers in the Night," and "My Way." The disc also contains a bonus track in the previously unreleased recording of "Body and Soul." Diehard Sinatra fans will likely own most of this material, yet as a greatest hits set (albeit covering the Reprise years only) NOTHING BUT THE BEST lives up to its title.
