Highwayman II album
$15.15 On his first traditional country album since 2004's WHAT I DO, Alan Jackson steps outside the comfortable routine he's created for himself in favor of creating a more personal and introspective work. The first album on which Jackson has written all of the songs all by himself, GOOD TIME is Jackson's most autobiographical album by some distance. "Small Town Southern Man" is a touching farewell to his late father, while "I Wish I Could Back Up" and "Never Loved Before" (a duet with country superstar Martina McBride) are intimate love songs more revealing than most country radio fare. GOOD TIME is true to its title, however; alongside the revealing autobiographical tunes, there are sly, swaggering country-rockers like "Country Boy" and more thoughtful fare like the devotional "If Jesus Walked The World Today." At 17 songs, this is one of Alan Jackson's longest albums, but GOOD TIME features remarkably little filler and many outstanding new traditionalist country songs in the great Alan Jackson style.
Alan Jackson: Brent Mason (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bass guitar); Bruce Watkins (acoustic guitar, banjo); James Curtis Mitchell (electric guitar, accordion); Paul Franklin (steel guitar, lap steel guitar, dobro); Robbie Flint (lap steel guitar); Stuart Duncan (mandolin, fiddle); ...

| | Steve Martin Crow: New Songs For The Five-String Banjo CD (2009)
Highwayman II album
$11.09 The banjo has been a major player in Steve Martin's act since his earliest days of stand-up. Back in the era of wild 'n' crazy guys and arrows through heads, the comedian's bluegrass breakdowns seemed just another puzzle piece to his absurdist shtick. However, four decades into a career of comedy, movies, novels, and memoirs, Martin proves his banjo love no passing fancy on his dead-serious 2009 musical debut, THE CROW. It's a somber yet fun affair that ranges from rollicking instrumentals like "Hoedown at Alice's" and "Tin Roof" (on which he is joined by fellow comedian-musician Eugene Levy) to the rich country balladry of "Pretty Flowers" (featuring ...
| | Vince Gill These Days CDs (2006) Digipak
Highwayman II CD music
$22.15 Not since Prince released the three-hour, three-CD set EMANCIPATION in 1996 or the Magnetic Fields took a similar number of discs for the sprawling 69 LOVE SONGS in 1999 has an artist attempted something as expansive as Vince Gill's THESE DAYS. A four-disc box set of all new material, nearly all of it Gill originals, THESE DAYS is possibly the widest-ranging country album of the modern era. The four discs are thematically and stylistically arranged. Disc one, WORKIN' ON A BIG CHILL, is a 1960s-flavored rock-and-roll album that recalls Bob Dylan's late '60s work with the Band and features Bonnie Bramlett's vocals on several songs. Disc two, THE REASON WHY, is a modern pop record in the style of Shania Twain's international releases, with several duet partners including Sheryl Crow and Leann Rimes. Disc three, SOME THINGS NEVER GET OLD, is straight honky-tonk in the Ray Price and Lefty Frizzell tradition. Finally, disc four, LITTLE BROTHER, is a strictly acoustic bluegrass and folk album that cuts Gill's writing and singing to its most elemental. Taken together, the four albums reveal Vince Gill to be one of modern country's most impressive performers.
Personnel include: Vince Gill (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Dan Tyminski, Del McCoury, Diana Krall, Emmylou Harris, Gretchen Wilson, ...

Highwayman II album
$16.09 This third installment of the TOTALLY COUNTRY series features more appealing hits by the genre's most popular artists. Tim McGraw's uplifting opening song, "Unbroken," precedes the pleading "Cry," by his wife, Faith Hill, revealing a dynamic track listing that flows exceedingly well from song to song. Much of the collection's tone is lyrically upbeat, as evidenced on Martina McBride's "Blessed," Rascal Flatts' "Love You Out Loud," Trick Pony's "On a Mission," and LeAnn Rimes' "Life Goes On." However, not all is sunny on VOL. 3, as melancholy tunes are carefully interspersed throughout, including Randy Travis's "Three Wooden Crosses" and Lonestar's "Not a Day Goes By." For the finest in a variety of country radio hits, TOTALLY COUNTRY ...
| | Joe Nichols Revelation CD (2004)
Highwayman II CD music
$7.39 One of the most traditional-sounding of the Nashville "new traditionalists," Joe Nichols is possessed of a rich, warm baritone that recalls the gritty golden pipes of legends George Jones, Conway Twitty, and, in particular, Merle Haggard. The Arkansas native also adopts the serious tone of his heroes, eschewing Music Row boot-scooting tunes in favor of songs full of heartbreak and soul-searching. The production on REVELATION reinforces the material's substantiality, focusing on uncluttered arrangements that allow the fine playing of Music City's finest (David Hungate, Bryan Sutton, Stuart Duncan, Brett Rowan) to shine through. Highlights include the life-affirming ballad "I Wish That Wasn't All," and the title track, a cover of Waylon Jennings's apocalyptic 1972 classic.
