Still fresh after 30 years
I owned this on vinyl in the seventies, was blown away by it then and just purchased it again on CD. It still blows me away nearly 30 years later. A must have for the McLaughlin enthusiast.

Fantastic
John MacLaughlin and his Mahavishnu Orchestra are probably the best you can get when it comes to Progressive Rock.
And in "Visions Of The Emerald Beyond", John managed to choose the best team that has ever joined him to represent the Mahavishnu Orchestra.
Extreme good taste. I love it. Fantastic.

Search over
With this recording, the Mahavishnu Orchestra reached a new peak. After the amazing 'Inner Mounting Flame' launched their arrival, the band went into overdrive and burned out after only a few of albums, but McLaughlin's experimentation and search for the right blend of rock, classicism and spirit went on. The classical orchestra used on 'Apocalypse' was whittled down to just three string players, and 'Visions..' captures the elusive blend perfectly. Dreamy open spaces with strings and vocals, stellar guitar work, punchy bass from Ralphe Armstrong and soaring violin from Jean-Luc Ponty make this a landmark album.

Great, wonderful, whatever words you want to say. One of THE most underated albums ever.

Good, but...
Excellent playing, complex and interesting compositions, but WAY too much of an appeal to commercial interests with this album. Clearly an attempt to "mainstream" MO's music, with some lyrics that have to rank as the silliest stuff I've heard in a long time. You can't really fault them, other fusion bands were looking for the same commercial appeal at the time of this release, too. Buy it for your MO collection, but don't expect it to be your favorite.
