| | James Taylor Live CD James Taylor Discography of CDs
(1 Customer Review)
Although he is a seasoned and well-loved live performer, James Taylor had never made a live record before 1993, when he released this two-CD set. Culled from a series of 14 concerts, these 30 songs capture the genial Taylor digging into an impressively rich bag of songs, with crowd-pleasing results. It's an extremely faithful recording--no overdubs--and the band is top-notch, with a standout backup vocal section. Taylor proves he doesn't mind serving up old chestnuts even after performing them for decades, and delivers the goods with such staples as "You've Got a Friend" and "Fire and Rain."
The first CD concentrates a bit more on classic-era James Taylor--CD 2 leans a bit toward his later career--but most of these songs will be familiar to anyone who was around when Taylor was a fixture on American radio. Beginning with a luminescent "Sweet Baby James," he remains faithful to the spirit of hits like "Shower the People" "Your Smiling Face", and "How Sweet it Is," although he sometimes plays around with his vocal delivery, as on the driving "Steamroller Blues." All in all, this is a satisfying retrospective of a distinguished body of work.

James Taylor is the godfather of the sensitive singer-songwriter movement of the '70s that clogged the charts with introspective folk-rock ballads and kept scores of troubadour manques up to their well-studied navels in champagne and caviar. He was the Nirvana to that generation's Bush and Stone Temple Pilots, an innovator besieged by imitators. But his '70s-godhead status hasn't hurt him any; he just keeps confessing and crooning on. HOURGLASS more or less follows the path of the last several Taylor releases: precisely articulated, carefully constructed songs that favor soft, muted colors over anything too brash or aggressive; and sinuous, literary songs delivered in Taylor's smooth, relaxed croon. True to form, Taylor pushes all the right boomer buttons on HOURGLASS. The opening cut begins with Richard Nixon's impeachment, and then turns into the kind of inward-looking self-exploration that is Taylor's specialty.

| | James Taylor Mud Slide Slim And The Blue Horizon CD (1971)
Live CD music
$6.38 For the follow up to his classic SWEET BABY JAMES, which rivals TAPESTRY's place in the boomer canon, archetypal sensitive singer-songwriter Taylor wisely elected not to stray too far from the approach that had worked so well on his previous album. He covers another Carole King tune ("You've Got A Friend,") perfects the L.A. folk-rock sound he inaugurated on his earlier work, courtesy of studio hotshots like Russ Kunkel, Danny Kootch and Leland Sklar, whose names are virtually synonymous with Taylor's '70s work. One of the most memorable tunes here, "Hey Mister That's Me Up On the Jukebox" is one of the more effective songs to bemoan the plight of the ...
| | James Taylor Gorilla CD (1975)
Live music CDs
$6.99 James Taylor's unique blend of well-crafted songs, meticulous production and heartfelt singing are all in abundance here on GORILLA. Featured are the Taylor originals "Mexico" and "Lighthouse" (both aided and abetted vocally by David Crosby and Graham Nash) and the uplifting, reflective "Music," which delightfully interweaves an orchestral harp in and around the melodic web of Taylor's crystalline guitar patterns. The lush mini-suite "Love Songs" opens with a guitar and clarinet duet and finds James moving ever so discreetly into Gershwin territory. Taylor's take on the Motown chestnut "How Sweet It Is" minted chart-topping gold ...
| | James Taylor In The Pocket CD (1976)
Live songs
$14.15 "Shower The People," with its richly textured vocal harmonies, opens James Taylor's "IN THE POCKET and sets the tone for all that follows, a virtual pop vocal chorale. Choir boy Art Garfunkel takes a lush guest turn on "A Junkie's Lament" and "Captain Jim's Drunken Dream." On his satiric anthem to the almighty dollar "Money Machine," James is joined by vocal dancing partner Valerie Carter, and they move across the song like a funked-out Fred and Ginger. David Crosby, Graham Nash, Bonnie Raitt, Carly Simon, and James' brother Alex all drop by to lend a voice throughout the album. But the guest of honor has to be Stevie Wonder, who co-wrote "Don't Be Sad 'Cause Your Sun Is Down" with James, and contributes his always delightful and distinctive chromatic harmonica. IN THE POCKET is fresh, musically diverse, and fun, handily produced by Russ Titleman and Lenny Waronker.
Recorded at Warner Bros. Recording Studios, North Hollywood, California.
Personnel: James Taylor (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, harmonica, horns, background vocals); James "J.T." Taylor (vocals, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, background vocals); Herb Pedersen (vocals, banjo); Peter Asher ...

| | Best Of James Taylor CD (2003)
Live CD music
$14.45 When his debut appeared in 1968, James Taylor was the first non-Beatle to release an album on the Fabs' Apple label. Since then, his long, consistent career has been a model of integrity and craft. While he hasn't ventured very far afield as say, his contemporary Joni Mitchell has), Taylor has maintained the gentle, introspective, archetypal singer-songwriter sound he defined over his first couple of albums. Eschewing quantity for quality, he remains a perennial favorite even with infrequent releases of new material.
THE BEST OF JAMES TAYLOR is the first collection to combine tracks from his three labels, rounding the set out with the newly recorded "Bittersweet." Though Taylor was among the first to usher in the era of autobiographical singer-songwriters, he also had a number of hits covering others (from Marvin Gaye's "How Sweet it Is" to Carole King's "You've Got a Friend)." The 20 songs here cover the arc of his career, serving to remind that not only do his early recordings remain essential components to the soundtrack of their era, but that Taylor remains one of the smo

| | Chantels CD (1958)
Live music CDs
$11.69 Although the songs here were recorded without any thought of sequencing, the end product--a collection of doo-wop and R&B singles, both hits and misses--turned out to be one of the first great rock albums. The Chantels' secret weapon, of course, was the astonishing performance of lead singer Arlene Smith, all of 16 at the time the first songs here were recorded, including the often-covered "Maybe."
Smith's vocals are incomparable--she has the sheer lungpower of an opera singer with nary a weakness at any point in her range--and she was no slouch as a songwriter, ...
