EMOTIONS, the 1991 chart-topping release from dance/pop chanteuse Mariah Carey, showed the world that she would have no sophomore slump. With her knack for writing hit material, Carey turned out a few smashes off of this release. The title cut was #1 on the Billboard chart for three weeks. Mariah sings her heart out on the power ballad "Can't Let Go," which went to #2 in early '92. Her distinctive multi-octave range allows her to manipulate casual dance/pop melodies, making them soar.

Q (10/99, p.142) - 3 stars out of 5 - "...EMOTIONS is a technically perfect example of mainstream R&B....sashays with the customary elegance of a multi-million dollar production, and Carey's pipes are...in fine fettle..." Stereo Review (1/92, p.77) - Performance "Fine singing" / Recording "Very good" - "...the lustrous texture of her voice, with its appealingly breathy quality, is enough to invite attention, but it is her startling high notes, far beyond the range of most vocalists, that inspire awe..." New York Times (Publisher) (9/15/91) - "...technically impressive and impassioned pop-gospel singing. Few vocalists in any musical genre have voices as flexible as Ms. Carey's nearly four-octave instrument..." Mariah Carey Emotions Songs | 1. | Emotions | $0.99 | |

2 Thumbs Way Up!! Yet another awesome album from Mariah. Vocally, it's one of her best! The album is 15 years old & still rocks just as much as ever. She was a strong sense of empowerment & a voice that won't quit! I just wish there were more than 10 songs on it! Best songs on the album I'd have to say would be
"Emotions," "Can't Let Go," "Make it Happen," "So Blessed," & "You're so Cold." Submitted by Mindy (Heath, Ohio USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Emotions
$16.05 On THE BLUEPRINT 3, still unretired Jay-Z announces "the only rapper to rewrite history without a pen." It's a standard Jigga boast, but the Brooklyn icon has earned the bragging by backing it up, particularly on his gold-label, top-shelf BLUEPRINT series. Ever-ready for battle, Jay-Z takes on autotune, crossover radio, and many other hip-hop concerns with the gloriously jagged rap elan for which he's become known.
When Jay-Z first made a series out of his best album, 2001's The Blueprint, it became a game of high expectations. The first volume saw Jay-Z as vital as he'd ever been, storming back to the hardcore after a few years of commercial success. THE BLUEPRINT 2 took a different tack, with guest shots to compliment his sinuous flows. BLUEPRINT 3 is somewhere between the two, closer to the vitality and energy of the original but not without the crossover bids and guest features of the latter. Kanye West is in the producer's chair for seven tracks, and it's clear he was reaching for the same energy level as the original. "What We Talkin' About" begins the album with a wave of surging, oppressive synth, while Jay-Z enumerates (with an intriguing lack of detail) what he's said and what's been said about him, ending with a nod not to the past but the future (and Barack Obama). There's plenty more lyrical violence to come, but most of the targets are much safer than they were eight years earlier (i.e. opening single and smash hit "D.O.A. ...
| | Raekwon Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Pt. II CD (2009)
Emotions
$11.29 Like the original, ONLY BUILT 4 CUBAN LINX, PART 2 sets the stage with the intro, but here, it's some Raekwon history courtesy of Papa Wu. On Part 1 it was fictional dialog introducing a loose concept album. Besides the introductory dialog and the album's look-a-like cover--tinted purple, as if it was a Cash Money, Screwed & Chopped mix of Part 1--the only traits this sequel shares with the original LINX is that it's the Wu-rapper in top form, spitting out rhymes worthy of the Wu logo and pushing his guest list to work harder, as evidenced by Ghostface, Jadakiss, and Cappadonna all sounding at the top of their game. The productions are equally magnificent with Pete Rock, the Alchemist, and even Dr. Dre all living up to their lofty reputations. Inspectah Deck and the Wu's secret weapon Mathematics out RZA the RZA on their 36 CHAMBERS-flavored cuts--the awesome "House of Flying Daggers" and "Mean Streets," respectively--but if it's possible to create a poignant beat track, it has to be the soulful loop on "Ason Jones," a tribute to Ol' Dirty Bastard made all the more moving when you notice the beat comes from the late J. Dilla. Raekwon's lyrical highlights come back-to-back as "Gihad" slaps the current rap scene for all its worth while "New Wu" with Ghostface, Method Man, and RZA on production renews hope that the Wu-Tang dynasty ...
| | Whispers Thankful CD (2009)
Emotions
$11.98 The generally earthy passions of soul and R&B can sometimes mask their very intimate connection to black gospel music, a fact that isn't lost on veteran L.A. group The Whispers. During their late-`70s to early-`80s peak they were churning out silky pop-R&B hits like "And the Beat Goes On" and "Rock Steady," up-tempo dance tracks that ...
| | Journey: The Very Best Of Donna Summer CD (2003) Bonus CD
Emotions
$11.99 Initial pressings of THE JOURNEY included a bonus CD featuring 12" remixes.
As one of the few performers from the disco era to have a career beyond one-hit wonder status, Donna Summer has continued forward on her creative path well into the 1990s, necessitating the release of the two-disc THE JOURNEY: THE VERY BEST OF DONNA SUMMER. Summer neophytes will get their share of this diva's classic '70s fare including soft-core anthems ("Love to Love You Baby"), streetwalker tributes ("Bad Girls"), erstwhile Jimmy Webb covers ("Macarthur Park") and songs that became ubiquitously associated with proms and weddings ("Last Dance"). Disco aficionados also get a taste of deeper cuts, including "Heaven Knows," "I Feel Love," ...

| | Toby Keith Honkytonk University CD (2005)
Emotions
$12.39 After Toby Keith achieved household-name status with two chart-topping albums full of defiant songs and right-wing politics, listeners may have expected more of the same. With 2005's HONKYTONK UNIVERSITY, however, Keith matches his outlaw aspirations to a set of tunes that remind his audience that he is a country singer first and a media icon second.
The opening "Honkytonk U" is an autobiographical tune that sounds like an outtake from Waylon Jennings's HONKY TONK HEROES, complete with phase-shifted guitar and a four-in-the-morning vocal delivery. Many of the other tunes here have a 1970s vibe as well, but with a poppier slant; the smooth melody of "Knock Yourself Out" recalls Ronnie Milsap, while the breezy feel of "Big Blue Note" wouldn't sound out of place on a Jimmy Buffett record. ...
