These songs remain lasting favorites of Doris Day's career; everybody will recognize one or two. She brought out their elegance and made them memorable. These songs will always be associated with Day's sunny voice, but underneath the sunshine lies complexity and artistry that even those who feel they know this star well will wish to reacquaint themselves with.
Her way of executing phrases is simple and direct, playing with neither beat nor rhythm. From her earliest Number One hit, "Sentimental Journey," her technique is measured and deliberate, yet feels comfortable. "Secret Love," a song she reportedly recorded in one take, reveals what a musical natural she was, as she effortlessly changes from soft to bold at the song's bridge.

LA BIOGRAPHIE DE LUKA PHILIPSEN, the debut album from Isareali-born vocalist Keren Ann, includes "Seule," "On Est Loin," and 11 other tracks of unique trip-hop/French pop fusion.
Like Coralie Clément, Keren Ann may not have the widest range, but she makes the most of it. Her vocals are light, delicate, and pretty, as if she has found a way to combine talking, whispering, and singing into one fluid approach (and as if she has listened to a few Astrud Gilberto albums in her time). La Biographie de Luka Philipsen was the French singer/songwriter's debut and many of the songs were co-written with longtime associate Benjamin Biolay (Clément's older brother). Biolay also produced, played several instruments (guitar, trumpet, and trombone), and provided the orchestral arrangements. The pleasing results are somewhat like a modern-day Serge Gainsbourg-Françoise Hardy collaboration. They even duet on one song, "Decrocher les Etoiles." Consequently, Biolay has often been compared to Gainsbourg, and Keren Ann has often been compared to Hardy, but Keren Ann -- like Biolay -- is a multi-instrumentalist, as well, and plays guitar and clarinet on the album. In addition, she has written songs for other artists, most notably Henri Salvador. The Brazilian-sounding "Jardin d'Hiver," which appears on La Biographie (and was co-written by Biolay), first showed up on Salvador's Chambre Avec Vue. It became a big hit for the 83-year-old French jazz musician and would garner awards (like the prestigious Victoires ...

Released right after the career albums TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT and ZUMA and right before the big-selling COMES A TIME and RUST NEVER SLEEPS, this country-rocky 1977 album is often forgotten. But it introduced the sensational "Like A Hurricane," which has remained a staple of Young's concerts, and such quirky favorites as "Homegrown," an ode to marijuana, and "Old Country Waltz," which is exactly what it says it is. As Neil Young's legendary 1970s albums go, it might be a bit of a tossed-off affair, but most country-rockers can only dream of making one album this good.
