A mercurial talent snuffed out all too soon by a tragic early death, Jeff Buckley seemed poised to carry the singer-songwriter tradition into the new millennium when he released his one and only studio album, 1994's GRACE. With his inventive jazz-influenced phrasing and sweeping, wraith-like vocals, Buckley defied easy comparisons to his late-father, `70s cult troubadour Tim Buckley. While the flurry of reissues and rehashes that have emerged after Jeff Buckley's death have generally done little to add to his legacy, GRACE AROUND THE WORLD, a collection of live recordings approximating the track list from GRACE, comes across as more than mere barrel scrapings.
Assembled from previously unreleased live concert and television appearances from locales ranging from the U.S. and U.K. to France, Germany, and Japan, the multi-disc collection provides perhaps the most comprehensive musical portrait of Buckley yet. From Buckley-penned originals ("Last Goodbye," "Grace," "Mojo Pin"), to his signature cover of Lenoard Cohen's "Hallelujah," to the seldom-performed Qawwali-influenced "What Will You Say," the powerful performances on offer are every bit as thrilling as the studio versions. And with a companion DVD interspersed with revealing behind-the-scenes footage and interviews, a more intimate portrait of the artist is unlikely to be found.
With GRACE, his first full-length statement as a bandleader, songwriter/guitarist Jeff Buckley sets out upon a road less travelled, avoiding the safe and predictable in favor of the ecstatic and the personal. Not that such obvious influences as the Beatles and Led Zeppelin have disappeared from this young talent's music. Buckley's voice is an exquisite, malleable instrument, and from his daring vaults into the upper registers to his long, enraptured middle-register ornaments and moans, he suggests the breakthroughs of a young Robert Plant or Van Morrison.
Songs like "The Last Goodbye" (with its coy slide intro and ragaish string backgrounds) and "Lover, You Should've Come Over" (with its late Beatles harmonies and Edith Piaf vocal ornaments) are powerful evocations of failing relationships ("too young to hold on, and too old to just break free and run"). "Lilac Wine" and "Hallelujah" feature his glassy, translucent guitar and poignant vocals in mystical, folkish settings, while "Dream Brother" achieves an almost Doors-like melancholy. Elsewhere, Buckley showcases his new band's power on "Mojo Pin" and "Eternal Life," which draw upon blues imagery and metaphors to create a subtle, hard-rocking atmosphere.

Grace Music Review Average Rating: (4.8 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews More Time Will you like every song-No! Probably only 60% of it. But Jeff Buckley shows us all how he was on the verge of pure greatness. His style was original, lyrics and music were great. If he were alive today-he'd humbly be on top of the music scene, kindly like how U2 has never died. Give it a chance though, experience this greatly talented musicians music- that only reveals glimpses of what he would have produced. Beyond Expectations You can read every glowing word written about this cd and never get close to it's essence. There are not enough stars available - it deserves 50 not just 5. The range is phenomenal, the production excellent, the song crafting inspired and the performing from the heart. Buy it, and then go out and explore his father's early work (Tim Buckley). How lucky we all are to have a generational extension, an evolution of the Buckley Vibe. I prefer to view this not as Jeff's only albumn but a very fortunate addition, a lost volume if you will of the Buckley Canon!
Jeff shed a little grace on us and then moved off this mortal relm. Believe it! Submitted by J. Kerouac (Grand Rapids Rail Yard) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The Voice I didn't know Jeff. One day, about 3 months ago a friend of mine told me about this artist, that had only made one CD. I am a jazz singer and when I heard Jeff for the first time, I was just blown away. I fell in love with him and his voice. I've read DREAMBROTHER. He had this something, not only in his voice, but in his soul, that make me melt away each time I listen to his voice. It's a pitty that I won't ever have the opportunity to hear him live. a life way to short lived jeff hit on all cylinders. he reminds me of zappa and artists with a mind that transcends time. he is easliy bored which explains the use of all genres of music. I feel terrible that he is dead because he would have been one of the very best at his craft. i wasn't alive when jimmi hendrix died but jeff was on his way to becoming that type of impact on all listeners. RIP 4ever jeff. i hope that your mother continues to find uncut music that never made it like sketches 4 my sweetheart the drunk. I am sure that artists like chris cornell miss your presence. you are certainly missed by all that knew of you. Submitted by Damien Jude (hicksville, ny) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
