| | Duke Ellington 16 Most Requested Songs CD Duke Ellington Discography of CDs
Recorded between 1932 and 1957. Includes liner notes by Didier C. Deutsch.
Now, here's a gem! MOST REQUESTED SONGS could be subtitled "The Duke's Greatest Hits"--and it'd be no lie. Spanning the years 1932 through 1960, this compiles all the songs most associated with the Duke. These songs rank among the finest America has produced, each covered by dozens of singers and instrumentalists. The versions here feature performances by some of the greatest soloists jazz has ever produced--Johnny Hodges, Harry Carney and Clark Terry. Ellington wrote for the individual strengths of his bandmembers, and it shows: no one else ever got such distinctive textures out of a jazz orchestra. For the history of big band jazz, or jazz, or American music in general, this is an essential purchase.
This is part of Legacy's "16 Most Requested Songs" series.
Personnel includes: Duke Ellington (piano); Ivie Anderson, Al Hibbler, Yvonne Lanauze (vocals); Johnny Hodges (soprano & alto saxophones, clarinet); Harry Carney (alto, tenor & baritone saxophones, clarinet); Otto Hardwicke (alto & bass saxophones, clarinet); Russell Procope (alto saxophone); Barney Bigard (tenor saxophone, clarinet); Paul Gonsalves, James Hamilton (tenor saxophones); Arthur Whetsol, Cootie Williams, Clark Terry, William Anderson (trumpet); Juan Tizol, Joe Nanton, Lawrence Brown (trombone); Billy Strayhorn (piano); Fred Guy (guitar, banjo); Wellman Braud, Billy Taylor, Edgar Brown, Jimmy Woode, Oscar Pettiford (bass); Sonny Greer, Sam Woodyard (drums).

$20.39 Glenn Hughes is the former bassist of Deep Purple and Pat Thrall was voted Best New Talent of 1980 by Guitar Player Magazine.
The fruit of a one-off collaboration between ex-Deep Purple bassist/singer Glenn Hughes and journeyman guitarist Pat Thrall, Hughes/Thrall is full of the energy of early-'80s rock. With lyrics like "You got the power/Turn on the light" sung in best Ian Gillan fashion and buoyed by relentless grooves and Thrall's virtuosic guitar, this album is an overlooked gem. Thrall's use of the guitar synthesizer is very interesting. Throughout the album, he combines the muscle of hard rock with the textures of post-punk and new wave, as if Andy Summers were sitting around jamming ...
| | Pepper Adams 10 To 4 At The 5-Spot CD (1958)
16 Most Requested Songs music CDs
$8.39 In 1958, Pepper Adams and Donald Byrd were pivotal members of a sextet led by Chicago tenor saxophonist Johnny Griffin. They also formed their own quintet with fellow Detroiters Doug Watkins and Elvin Jones, and the then-rising star Bobby Timmons as the fifth wheel. This album, one of the first club dates recorded for the Riverside label, may have presented logistic problems with the acoustics, mic placements, and reel to reel tape technology, but there were no such issues with the extraordinary music contained on this effort. A tight, in tune and exciting ensemble, Adams and Byrd laid it all out for this single 39-minute set of modern jazz at the Five Spot Café in New York City. The symmetry between the witty and raw baritone sax of Adams and Byrd's stirring and sometimes strained trumpet is the stuff of legends, and the hallmark of the bop to hard bop era. Contained on this album are two definitive all-time great selections -- "The Long Two/Four" and especially "Hastings Street Bounce" -- the former with a march intro from Jones setting up ...

Digitally remastered by Phil De Lancie (1994, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
This odds-and-sods disc gathers nine cuts from a variety of non-LP sources -- including 7" 45 RPM-only releases and seasonal offerings, and kicks off with a quarter-hour-long reading of "Ain't No Sunshine," Isaac Hayes' contribution to the Wattstax (1973) Original Motion Picture soundtrack. As there are only a few vintage archival live recordings to feature Hayes' early-'70s work, every one is worthy of, at the very least, a cursory ...
