As with any prolific jazz artist, no one album from Thelonious Monk's career could provide a definitive introduction to his music. And unlike Miles Davis or John Coltrane, Monk's development did not take place in epochal leaps defined by this or that particular LP. Rather, Monk's art unfolded through a continued probing of a relatively small collection of compositions. MONK'S GREATEST HITS contains nothing that ever had a prayer of heavy rotation on FM radio, but rather nine of the tunes that Monk spent his career exploring, all of which have become integral to the jazz repertoire. This material was recorded between 1963 and 1967, and on four of the tunes Monk stretches out past the ten-minute mark. Most of the cuts are live recordings featuring Monk's tenor saxophonist of choice in later years, Charlie Rouse. Rouse is present on all but two solo cuts ("Round Midnight" and "Ruby, My Dear").
Personnel: Thelonious Monk (piano); Steve Lacy (soprano saxophone); Phil Woods (alto saxophone, clarinet); Charlie Rouse (tenor saxophone); Gene Allen (baritone saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet); Nick Travis (trumpet); Thad Jones (cornet); Eddie Bert (trombone); Pee Wee Russell (clarinet); Larry Gales, Butch Warren, John Ore (bass); Ben Riley, Frank Dunlop (drums).

| | George Benson Songs And Stories CD (2009)
Greatest Hits
$15.65 George Benson's sound is so recognizable that, in its way, it's quite comforting to hear his voice or his guitar come across on the radio or in a club. His recordings have been polished and extravagant in many cases, but there are those signature elements-his relaxed delivery and silky touch on the strings and his voice, as evocative as a cool breeze floating across a hot summer night. SONGS AND STORIES doesn't deviate from his formula a great deal, but it doesn't have to. He's chosen ten ubiquitous pop tunes from a variety of songwriters (and one by a relatively new kid on the block), and with the help of producers John Burk and Marcus Miller, he puts them across in fine style.

| | Bill Evans Portrait In Jazz CD (1959) Remastered
Greatest Hits
$9.65 An indisputable jazz classic, Bill Evans's PORTRAIT IN JAZZ was originally released in 1959, issued on CD in the early `90s, then remastered and re-released in 2008. The crisp remastering is a joy, and brings the glorious music made by the legendary pianist and his trio into sharp, gorgeous relief. Evans's treatments of standards and classics such as "Come Rain or Come Shine," "Witchcraft," and "Someday My Prince Will Come" are startling and moving, but it's the originals--"Peri's Scope" and the seminal "Blue in Green"--that stand out.
Bill Evans (Piano): Bill Evans (piano); Scott LaFaro (bass instrument); Paul Motian (drum).

| | George Strait Chill Of An Early Fall CD (1991)
Greatest Hits
$6.45 1991's THE CHILL OF AN EARLY FALL is the first album that George Strait released after the sudden ascendance of Garth Brooks as the new king of country music, a move that nudged Strait into the unexpected role of elder statesman after a half-decade in which he was the hottest thing in Nashville. Wisely, Strait doesn't try to reassert his primacy by mimicking the younger singer's more pop-oriented moves; instead, THE CHILL OF AN EARLY FALL is a reflective, quiet album in keeping with its autumnal title. The haunting title track is one of Strait's most effective ballads, but perhaps most interesting is the stretch of old-school country classics Strait essays on side two, completely traditional and heartfelt versions of Lefty Frizell's "Anything You Can Spare," Bob Wills's "Home In San Antone," Hank Williams's "Lovesick Blues" and Kokomo Arnold's "Milk Cow Blues." In this roots-conscious effort, Strait subtly reaffirms his connection to bedrock country music in the face of the increasingly pop-oriented focus Nashville would take in the coming decade.
Personnel: George Strait (vocals, guitar); Steve Gibson, David Anthony (acoustic guitar); Brett Rowan, Rick McRae, Benny McArthur (electric guitar); Paul Franklin, Mike Daily (steel guitar); Gene Elders, Johnny Gimble (fiddle); Jim Horn (saxophone); Floyd Domino, Ronnie Huckaby (piano); Joe Chemay, Terry Hale (bass); Larrie London, Phil Fisher (drums).
