| | Donovan Greatest Hits CD Donovan Discography of CDs
(6 Customer Reviews)
This 1999 reissue contains four bonus tracks not on the original release.
An expanded reissue of a 1969 best-of compilation, GREATEST HITS is still the best single-disc distillation of the magic that was Donovan. (1992's double-disc TROUBADOUR, however, is great for bigger fans or rarities buffs.) One of the classic love-him-or-hate-him artists of the '60s, Donovan Leitch's mixture of folky sincerity ("Colours"), hippie-dippie humanism ("Atlantis," "Epistle To Dippy") and just plain daffy surrealism ("Sunshine Superman," "Hurdy Gurdy Man," "Mellow Yellow"), set to Mickie Most's Swinging London arrangements, heavy on the horns and strings, epitomizes the Carnaby Street era like no one else can.
The handful of bonus tracks include Donovan's surprisingly cool collaboration with the Jeff Beck Group on "Barabajagal" and his theme for the Chuck Jones TV cartoon "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi." Novices should start here.
Includes liner notes by Donovan Leitch.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Additional Tracks
Personnel includes: Donovan Leitch; Jimmy Page (guitar); Harold McNair (flute, saxophone); Danny Thompson (acoustic bass); John Bonham (drums).
Producers include: Terry Kennedy, Mickie Most. Donovan Greatest Hits Songs Greatest Hits Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Donovan the Underrated! The first point about this greatest hits compilation is that there are no weak songs on here, even with 15 tracks! Being recently reminded about Donovan (the Colours song on a commercial), I decided to check into him, and I have realized that I have missed out on so much! Listening to it the first time, I did a lot of, "Oh, that was Donovan!" This is a great overview and a fantastic collection of hits and lesser known jewels. I highly recommend it! We need more gentle influences on the world today, and it's a shame Donovan is not in the limelight anymore! Submitted by a reviewer (Champaign, IL) Was This Review Helpful? Amazing I recently found this record at an antique store and picked it up only to find that my favorite song "Season of The Witch" was on it so I payed a whole 2 bucks for it, brought it home, put it on my record player and was completly blown away by Donovan! His voice is amazing...every song is wonderful. Mine being an original of course does not have the bonus tracks but even without them its a great record! I highly recommend this...if your into 60's music Donovan is the king of flower power! Submitted by Susan (South Carolina) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A time machine.. Summer before my senior year in High School. Worked as a camp counselor. This album kept us alive in the midst of muggy, mosquito laden, kid whiny wood retreat! Submitted by cfoster (Indianapolis, IN USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Greatest Hits
$10.85 Digitally remastered by Gary Hobish (1994, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Guided, perhaps, by musical snobbery or roots-rock phobia, some people inexplicably don't like Creedence Clearwater Revival. As the kings of earnest country-inflected rock in an age when radical stances were de rigueur, CCR sported straight-ahead tunes, and may have seemed a bit unhip. But their music stands the test of time with a vengeance. For the doubtful listener, this outstanding, 20-track hits collection has evidence of their greatness in staggering abundance.
Though they produced several excellent albums, Creedence was predominantly a singles band, and CHRONICLE compiles many of their biggest hits. From the slowly building saunter of "Suzie Q" and the spooky, R&B-soaked "I Put a Spell on You" to the fierce "Fortunate Son" and the swampy blues of "Run Through the Jungle," CHRONICLE features the ensemble's signature tunes. Beautifully melancholy songs "Who'll Stop the Rain" and "Someday Never Comes" play off sunny, melodic anthems "Down on the Corner" and "Lookin' Out My Back Door," fully revealing the band's wide range. The group's tight, no-frills ...
| | Jimi Hendrix Electric Ladyland CD (1968)
Greatest Hits
$9.89 Principally recorded at the Record Plant, New York, New York in April and May 1968.
On ELECTRIC LADYLAND Jimi Hendrix stretched and experimented in the studio, going beyond the power-trio format on what would be his last studio album with the Experience. ELECTRIC LADYLAND was revolutionary in its scope and execution. Using New York City's Record Plant as a gateway to free expression, Hendrix traversed an abstract landscape containing compositions as weird and wonderful as "...And The Gods Made Love" and "1983...(A Merman I Should Turn To Be)."
Simultaneously looking forwards and backwards, Hendrix mixed in a song reminiscent of his time on the chitlin' circuit ...
| | Beatles Abbey Road CD (1969)
Greatest Hits
$15.65 ABBEY ROAD, recorded in the summer of 1969, was the last album recorded by the Beatles (LET IT BE was released in 1970, but recorded in early '69).
After the laborious disorganization and infighting that characterized early 1969's LET IT BE sessions (as famously captured on film), the fractious four were willing to let George Martin take the reins and to work with him as a cohesive unit for the much more succinct production of their (and the decade's) swan song, ABBEY ROAD. The superb performances make ...
| | Who Ultimate Collection CDs (2002) Remastered
Greatest Hits
$15.25 Initial pressings of THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION included a limited edition bonus disc featuring four previously unreleased tracks.
Recorded between November 1964 and June 1982. Includes liner notes by Matt Kent and Andy Neill.
When it comes to a ground-breaking, iconic band like the Who, dubbing an anthology THE ULTIMATE COLLECTION is no small claim. The kicker here is that it happens to be the truth. Without venturing into the realm of the box set, there's never been such a definitive batch of Who tunes all under one roof before. Virtually all the bases are covered here, from such attitude-laden mid-'60s mod anthems as "My Generation" and "Anyway, Anyhow, Anywhere" to the conceptual expansiveness of TOMMY-era tunes ("I'm Free," "See ...
| | Mike Bloomfield Super Session CD (1968) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Greatest Hits
$6.75 A surprise best-seller when it was first released, this mostly improvised pairing of singer/keyboardist/producer Al Kooper with two major guitar heroes of the day sounds fascinating all these years later precisely because of the distance of time--nobody makes records like this any more. The material runs the gamut from folk pop (covers of Donovan and Dylan), to blues ("Albert's Shuffle," "You Don't Love Me"), to heady jams ("His Holy Modal Majesty"), to big-band jazz ("Harvey's Tune").
All the tunes make effective templates for the kind off-the-cuff music-making that in less capable hands might have resulted in simple noodling. In fact, although Bloomfield and Stills don't play together on any of the cuts (Bloomfield played on one side of the original LP, Stills on the other), all three principals get off lots of good licks and producer Kooper has some interesting tricks up his sleeve, as in the over-the-top phasing he lavishes on "You Don't Love Me." The only real disappointment here is that Stills, a far better singer than Kooper, never opens his mouth.
Those familiar with the Live Adventures album these two recorded at the Fillmore West know how brilliant they could be on stage, and here's another gem, recorded at the Fillmore East this ...
