Personnel: Donovan (vocals, whistling, acoustic guitar, banjo, harp, tamboura); Mike Thomson (vocals, guitar); Eric Leese, Eric Ford, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Allan Holdsworth (electric guitar); Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra (strings); Harold McNair (flute); Danny Moss (horns); Gabriel Mekler, John Cameron, Nicky Hopkins, Mike O'Neil (keyboards); Mike Carr (vibraphone); Cliff Barton (electric bass); Tony Carr (drums, percussion); Keith Webb, Bobby Orr, Clem Clatini, James Gordon, John Bonham, Tony Newman (drums); Lesley Duncan, Madeline Bell, Suzi Quatro (background vocals). Liner Note Author: Donovan. Recording information: 1964-1970. Epic's Greatest Hits may not be a perfect collection -- for instance, it contains re-recordings of his earliest folk songs, "Catch the Wind" and "Colours," not the originals -- but for many casual fans, that may not matter since the remaining nine songs offer an excellent summary of his hit singles. And, as these songs prove, Donovan and producer Mickie Most could craft irresistible folk-rock and psychedelic pop singles. Some of the sounds and sentiments may sound a little dated, but the productions and the songs -- "Sunshine Superman," "Jennifer Juniper," "Wear Your Love Like Heaven," "Season of the Witch," "Mellow Yellow," "Hurdy Gurdy Man," "Epistle to Dippy," "There Is a Mountain," "Lalena" -- have proven to be classics of the era, and this is the best place to get them all on one collection. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine An expanded reissue of a 1969 best-of compilation, GREATEST HITS is still the best single-disc distillation of the magic that was Donovan. (1992's double-disc TROUBADOUR, however, is great for bigger fans or rarities buffs.) One of the classic love-him-or-hate-him artists of the '60s, Donovan Leitch's mixture of folky sincerity ("Colours"), hippie-dippie humanism ("Atlantis," "Epistle To Dippy") and just plain daffy surrealism ("Sunshine Superman," "Hurdy Gurdy Man," "Mellow Yellow"), set to Mickie Most's Swinging London arrangements, heavy on the horns and strings, epitomizes the Carnaby Street era like no one else can. The handful of bonus tracks include Donovan's surprisingly cool collaboration with the Jeff Beck Group on "Barabajagal" and his theme for the Chuck Jones TV cartoon "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi." Novices should start here. Epic/Legacy's 1999 reissue of Greatest Hits improves on the original 1969 collection in a number of ways. First of all, the original Hickory versions of "Catch the Wind" and "Colours" are included instead of re-recordings, which is enough to make this new edition preferable, but the compilers have also chosen to include the original mono version of these hits instead of the stereo cuts that were on the first edition. Plus, they've added four excellent bonus tracks: "Atlantis," "To Susan on the West Coast Waiting," "Barabajagal," and "Riki Tiki Tavi." All of that means that this expanded and updated Greatest Hits is a near-perfect single-disc summary of Donovan's most popular material and hit singles. As these songs prove, Donovan and producer Mickie Most could craft irresistible folk-rock and psychedelic pop singles. Some of the sounds and sentiments may sound a little dated, but the productions and the songs -- "Sunshine Superman," "Jennifer Juniper," "Wear Your Love Like Heaven," "Season of the Witch," "Mellow Yellow," "Hurdy Gurdy Man," "Epistle to Dippy," "There Is a Mountain," "Lalena," plus the aforementioned bonus tracks -- have proven to be classics of the era, and this is the best place to get them all on one collection. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlew Donovan Greatest Hits Songs Greatest Hits Music Review Average Rating: (4.3 out of 5 stars) List All Reviews Donovan the Underrated! The first point about this greatest hits compilation is that there are no weak songs on here, even with 15 tracks! Being recently reminded about Donovan (the Colours song on a commercial), I decided to check into him, and I have realized that I have missed out on so much! Listening to it the first time, I did a lot of, "Oh, that was Donovan!" This is a great overview and a fantastic collection of hits and lesser known jewels. I highly recommend it! We need more gentle influences on the world today, and it's a shame Donovan is not in the limelight anymore! Submitted by a reviewer (Champaign, IL) Was This Review Helpful? Amazing I recently found this record at an antique store and picked it up only to find that my favorite song "Season of The Witch" was on it so I payed a whole 2 bucks for it, brought it home, put it on my record player and was completly blown away by Donovan! His voice is amazing...every song is wonderful. Mine being an original of course does not have the bonus tracks but even without them its a great record! I highly recommend this...if your into 60's music Donovan is the king of flower power! Submitted by Susan (South Carolina) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
A time machine.. Summer before my senior year in High School. Worked as a camp counselor. This album kept us alive in the midst of muggy, mosquito laden, kid whiny wood retreat! Submitted by cfoster (Indianapolis, IN USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

| | Beatles Abbey Road CD (1969)
Greatest Hits
$16.15 ABBEY ROAD, recorded in the summer of 1969, was the last album recorded by the Beatles (LET IT BE was released in 1970, but recorded in early '69). The Beatles: Paul McCartney (vocals, guitar, keyboards, bass); John Lennon (vocals, guitar, keyboards); George Harrison (vocals, guitar, synthesizer); Ringo Starr (vocals, drums, percussion). The last Beatles album to be recorded (although Let It Be was the last to be released), Abbey Road was a fitting swan song for the group, echoing some of the faux-conceptual forms of Sgt. Pepper, but featuring stronger compositions and more rock-oriented ensemble work. The group was still pushing forward ...
