| | Janis Joplin Greatest Hits CD Janis Joplin Discography of CDs
(5 Customer Reviews)
GREATEST HITS spans the length of Janis Joplin's recording career, and features songs recorded with each of her three bands--Big Brother & The Holding Co., the Kozmic Blues Band, and the Full Tilt Boogie Band.
Originally released on Columbia (32168). Includes liner notes by Jaan Uhelszki.
Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini at Sony Music Studios, New York, New York.
Drawing inspiration from Bessie Smith and Odetta, Joplin developed a brash, uncompromising vocal style quite unlike accustomed folk madonnas. In 1966 Janis was invited to the Bay Area to front Big Brother And The Holding Company. Their CHEAP THRILLS, a joyous celebration of true psychedelic soul, contained two Joplin 'standards', "Piece Of My Heart" and "Ball And Chain", but she left the group in November 1968. Electric Flag members Mike Bloomfield, Harvey Brooks and Nick Gravenites helped assemble a new act, known as the Kozmic Blues Band. I Got Dem Ol' KOZMIC BLUES Again Mama was coolly received, but the set contained several excellent Joplin vocals, notably "Try," "Maybe" and "Little Girl Blue". The singer subsequently dissolved the band and undertook medical advice for drink/drug abuse. A slimmed-down group, the Full Tilt Boogie Band, was unveiled in May 1970 featuring a tighter, more intimate sound. Sessions for a debut album were all but complete when, on 4 October 1970, Joplin died of a heroin overdose at her Hollywood hotel. The posthumous PEARL proved her most consistent work, with "My Baby," "Cry Baby" and the anthemic "Get It While You Can." The highlight was the chart-topping "Me And Bobby McGee", which allowed Joplin to be both vulnerable and assertive. Janis knew few boundaries, artistic or personal, and her sadly brief catalogue is marked by bare-nerved honesty.

Reissue producer: Bob Irwin.Rolling Stone (8/16/73, p.50) - "...Janis Joplin's GREATEST HITS is no final testament to an artist, nor is it a document of its period. It is a record for people who can't get her out of their minds, and for whom she has become some sort of ghost, a permanent image of rock's capacity for generating self-destruction....Janis Joplin, Superstar..." Q (1/95, p.273) - 3 Stars - Good - "...It's not so much the timbre of her voice that stands out...but the sheer cathartic vitality that emanates from within. It's a soul-deep, blues act that was emphatically matched by her backing bands..." Great Place To Start Your Janis Collection Features all of her most popular songs. The best thing is that once you hear these songs you'll very likely want her entire collection, which unfortunately isn't that large. Then once you get everything, you can give this to someone else and get them hooked on the amazing Janis. Submitted by Robert (Cambridge, NY, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
The flower power generation woman since Joe Cocker! This digitally remastered greatest hits CD
which includes two bonus tracks on here
by Janis Joplin is an excellent collection. With the destinctive sound of her grasspy high toned soulful, bluesy voice in the history of rock & roll and also popular music back then. She defined a
influential following on legendary female
folk singers of the early late sixties like Canadian Joni Mitchell to country folkie ballader Joan Baez. There are four favorite songs that I like on here and they are "Piece Of My Heart", "Cry Baby", "Me And Bobby McGee" to "Mercedes
Benz".

Greatest Hits
$10.85 Digitally remastered by Gary Hobish (1994, Fantasy Studios, Berkeley, California).
Guided, perhaps, by musical snobbery or roots-rock phobia, some people inexplicably don't like Creedence Clearwater Revival. As the kings of earnest country-inflected rock in an age when radical stances were de rigueur, CCR sported straight-ahead tunes, and may have seemed a bit unhip. But their music stands the test of time with a vengeance. For the doubtful listener, this outstanding, 20-track hits collection has evidence of their greatness in staggering abundance.
Though they produced several excellent albums, Creedence was predominantly a singles band, and CHRONICLE compiles many of their biggest hits. From the slowly building saunter of "Suzie Q" and the spooky, R&B-soaked "I Put a Spell on You" to the fierce "Fortunate Son" and the swampy blues of "Run Through the Jungle," CHRONICLE features the ensemble's signature tunes. Beautifully melancholy songs "Who'll Stop the Rain" and "Someday Never Comes" play off sunny, melodic anthems "Down on the Corner" and "Lookin' Out My Back Door," fully revealing ...
| | Simon & Garfunkel Best Of Simon & Garfunkel CD (1999) Remastered
Greatest Hits
$9.75 Following the critically and commercially successful 1997 OLD FRIENDS box set, Legacy released a single-disc Simon & Garfunkel best-of collection. Simon & Garfunkel's are arguably the most successful duo in pop history, and this set features all of their charting songs. The disc is also an improvement on their 1972 GREATEST HITS release, with nearly twice the number of tracks, remastered sound, and wonderful liner notes by David Halberstram.
"The Sound of Silence," an anthem for a bygone era, leads into the reflective "Homeward Bound." Though it may not have climbed as high on the charts, the haunting and string-laden "The Dangling Conversation" is another standout track. "The 59th ...
| | Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced? CD (1967)
Greatest Hits
$9.69 This 1997 reissue of ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? is a remastered version that restores the original LP's track order and album artwork. ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? was previously reissued in 1993 (MCA 10893) with new cover art and a new 17-track running order that included all the songs on either the U.S. or U.K. versions of the original LP. That version is now out of print, and has been replaced by this one, on the Experience Hendrix label, which features remastered versions of the same 17 songs, this time in the order they appeared on the original American LP, with the extra tracks added to the end (a separate version was simultaneously released in the U.K., featuring the same songs but in the original British track order). The Experience Hendrix label is controlled by Hendrix's family.
The 1997 reissue also adds a 24-page booklet with previously-unpublished photos, the original LP liner notes and song lyrics.
Recorded in late 1966 and early 1967 at Olympic Studios, London, England.
Jimi Hendrix's debut recording was an instant classic, and is as startling today as when it first hit the streets in 1967. ARE YOU EXPERIENCED? is probably the most rock-oriented of Hendrix's official studio releases, ...
| | Bob Seger Greatest Hits CD (1994)
Greatest Hits
$9.59 Detroit has produced more than its share of great music: from jazz stars like Hank, Thad & Elvin Jones; to the Motown stable of vocal artists, and legendary rhythm players Benny Benjamin and James Jamerson. Not to mention a whole lot of hard funk and primal metal, everyone from Funkadelic and Ted Nugent, to Iggy & The Stooges and the MC5--hard driving, rugged rock and roll. Put it all together with a touch of pop, and a lot of soul, and you've got Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band.
It's easy to divine Seger's influence on the music of Bruce Springsteen, and draw parallels with the vocal style of Van Morrison. The epic themes of Seger's characters on "Night Moves" certainly parallel those of the folk heroes who populate Springsteen songs (though he began developing his menagerie a good decade before the Boss). The chant-like, testifying cadences of Seger's blowtorch voice, and his predilection for gospelish motifs, puts one in mind of the mighty Celt's visionary flights.
And as the fine GREATEST HITS makes clear, Bob Seger's influence on contemporary roots music is enormous. A ...
| | Muddy Waters Folk Singer CD (1964) Remastered
Greatest Hits
$8.49 Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated with 24-karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box.
"You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had" and "The Same Thing" did not appear on the original version of FOLK SINGER. They were recorded at a separate session in April 1964, three months after FOLK SINGER was released.
The title and cover photo of this 1963 recording were an attempt to cash in on the burgeoning American folk revival, but this is pure acoustic blues. Muddy began his career as a Robert Johnson-style solo acoustic performer, and the tunes on FOLK SINGER hark back to those days. He's accompanied sparsely by Willie Dixon, drummer Clifton James and a young Buddy Guy, who provide a stark, deliberate backdrop for Muddy's rich vocal and expressive bottleneck guitar work. The richness ...
