Full Descriptiondrug problem, Stevie Ray Vaughan had his new lease on life cut short by a helicopter crash the following year. The record itself features some of Vaughan's most inspired playing and Double Trouble has rarely sounded better. Songs such as "Crossfire," "Wall Of Denial" and "Tightrope" alluded to Vaughan's personal problems with just the right amount of optimism and scathing guitar thrown in for good measure. Blues influences abound whether it's a rollicking cover of Willie Dixon's "Let Me Love You Baby," a smoldering reading of Buddy Guy's "Leave My Girl Alone" or an upbeat take on Howlin' Wolf's "Love Me Darlin'."
For all his skill as an interpreter of other people's songs, Stevie Ray Vaughan's originals are just as solid. Of particular note here are the instrumentals "Travis Walk" and "Riviera Paradise." Paced by Chris Layton's militaristic time-keeping, the former finds Vaughan trading solos with Reese Wynan's pounding piano. The latter is a number that dates back to 1980 and shimmers with the same kind of gentle aura found in some of Carlos Santana's more introspective playing.

Vaughan's death in August 1990 brought to a tragic end the surging wave of his popularity. The album he had made with his brother Jimmie, FAMILY STYLE, had just been released and this album, prepared by Jimmie from the various album sessions, was not expected to amount to much. In fact, this was at least as good as any of them--and better than LIVE ALIVE. "Little Wing" was perhaps his best adaptation of a Jimi Hendrix song. 1985's SOUL TO SOUL was Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble's third album and on it, they are joined by keyboardist Reese Wynans whose contributions gives it a funkier edge than its two predecessors. Vaughan was always respectful of his roots and this time out he chose to included covers of songs by Hank Ballard ("Look At Little Sister"), Earl King ("Come On [Part III]") and Willie Dixon ("You'll Be Mine"). Even on songs he'd written himself, the Texas guitar slinger can be heard channeling Albert King's high-bent, string-squeezing technique on "Ain't Gone 'N' Give Up On Love," while a Jimi Hendrix-like combo of squalling leads and wah-wah-soaked rhythm playing saturate the infectious title track.
