PANTHALASSA features Bill Laswell culling sounds from the original session tapes for such groundbreaking Miles Davis albums as IN A SILENT WAY, ON THE CORNER and GET UP WITH IT, and creating new works.

In the spirit of those critics and theorists who've made the claim that Miles Davis' electric phase fathered everything from deep avant-garde funk to electronic music forms to post-rock improvisation, Bill Laswell has reconstructed the trumpeter's various themes of the period into ambient-minded pieces for the modern listener. PANTHALASSA, named for the Earth-encompassing ocean of the Pangaea myth, mixes source tapes of ten Davis originals into four soundscapes that drift in and out of musical coherence, perfectly encapsulating the indescribable sounds Miles and his bands were coming up with. For those afraid to jump in the deep waters of Davis' behemoth-like live releases such as DARK MAGUS and AGHARTA, PANTHALASSA is an excellent primer.
Laswell cuts and pastes the trumpeter's electric swing, Ellingtonian grooves and mountainous raptures of sound, tastefully using atmospheric keyboards as transitions, never stepping on the toes of the original compositions. And while the value of editing these colossal works into easily digestible pieces is somewhat akin to Cliff Notes of James Joyce novels, PANTHALASSA is a gourmet sample of Davis' extraordinary platters.
