Industry bigwig Tommy Mottola's discovery, French-language chanteuse Lara Fabian hits it big with her self-titled English solo debut. Packed with passionate love songs in the Barbara Streisand and Celine Dion vein, Fabian takes the power ballad one step further. Her voice and music are best described as dramatic, the songs here ranging from catchy tailor-made Top-40 dance tracks such as "Till I Get Over You," and "I Will Love Again," to power ballads such as "Adagio," which appears here both in English and Italian.
Fabian's voice is clear and amazingly strong, ranging from a near-whisper to a powerful belt. The lyrics are non-offensive and inspirational in a broken-hearted sort of way. Fans of Celine Dion and Mariah Carey will find Lara Fabian the ideal addition to their record collections.

 Breathtaking, Magnificent, Sublime
For those those who were not able to understand the subtleness of her French words, this is a marvellous opportunity to dive into Lara Fabian ocean of feelings and emotions, even for those who could, for it is, a wonderful album. Lara Fabian is an amazing person with an amazingly capacity to love and express her emotions. She has an expressive and impressive voice. I am totally in love with this album, Lara is the type of artist to be remembered just for who she is and for the blessing of her songs that,without any doubt, will, will accompany your life...Lara, you are one of a kind! Tu es PURE!

Powerful and Moving
She has a beautiful voice. It is too bad that she hasn't received more recognition in the United States. Each song on the cd has something wonderful to offer the listener.

The record that started the bossa nova craze of the mid-'60s, GETZ-GILBERTO is a justly recognized classic. The disc's success is attributable to its spectacular personnel: the man who basically invented bossa nova, Antonio Carlos Jobim; the man who defined and perfected the genre, Joao Gilberto; his charmingly waifish-sounding wife, Astrud Gilberto; and American tenor saxophonist extraordinaire Stan Getz. Jobim plays guitar and piano; Getz provides remarkably lyrical, complementary lead lines, and Joao Gilberto plays and sings in Portuguese with the most understated, romantic, and artful vocal delivery imaginable. This stunning album is Shirley Horn's loving tribute to her friend and colleague, the legendary late Miles Davis. Davis was so taken by Horn's first album EMBERS AND ASHES that he forced The Village Vanguard to let her virtually-unknown trio open for him during his 1961 run there. Angel Air continues to sweep up the furthest flung crumbs of the Ray Russell canon for reissue, and now they've finally swatted the Mouse onto CD. This quartet, comprising Russell, drummer Alan Rushton, keyboardist Jeff Watts, and singer Alan Greed released their sole album on EMI in 1973. Russell jokes in the booklet that "attempts to make a single were forgotten about an hour into the first session," but even so the compulsive "Electric Lady," a throbbing rocker, or alternately, the bouncy pop-flecked "We Can Make It" both fit that bill. And even if "Going Out Tonight" was a little too quirky for singledom, it was still the perfect set opener on-stage or on record. Given free rein, however, the band were all to free to explore the byways of their own obsessions. "All the Fallen Teen Angels," for example, is proof positive that you really can put a reggae beat to any kind of music, even pompous, synth-driven pop/rock and it certainly is startling, but would you really want to hear it twice? "Asher Besher," in contrast, delves deep into Black Sabbath territory, "The Happening to Me and You" dips into psychedelia, while "Just Came Back" returns from Delta blues. But even with all its musical meanderings, this is a more commercial album than Russell lets on, and if only producer John Acock had exerted a bit more control, squashing the occasional over-long intro and more tightly focused the songs, Lady Killer would have made a killing in the charts. As is, it's still a fine set of '70s rock in a supple and subtle experimental mode. [This release of the album contains bonus material.] ~ Jo-Ann Greene
