(4 Customer Reviews)
Billy Joel, a classically-trained pianist, was signed to Columbia Records in 1973. The title track to Piano Man, became a US Top 30 single and sowed the seeds of a highly successful recording career. However, Joel refused to bow to corporate demands for commercially-minded material and despite enjoying hits with two subsequent albums, Street Life Serenade and Turnstiles, it was not until 1977 that his fortunes flourished with the release of The Stranger, which eventually surpassed Bridge Over Troubled Water as Columbia's best-selling album. Joel's 1979 album, 52nd Street, spawned another smash single, 'My Life' while the singer's first US number 1, 'It's Still Rock 'N' Roll To Me' came from a subsequent release, Glass Houses. His image as a popular, uncontroversial figure was shaken with The Nylon Curtain, which featured two notable 'protest' compositions, 'Allentown' and 'Goodnight Saigon'. However he returned to simpler matters in 1984 with An Innocent Man which included the effervescent best-seller 'Uptown Girl'. In 1997, he announced that he would not be writing any pop songs in the foreseeable future, concentrating instead on classical scores.

Awesome This album is easily the greatest compilation of all time. Every song -and when I say every song, I mean every song song-is a classic. Every single one is great. It's amazing. When you go to record songs from it on to tape or MiniDisc, you'll find yourself without enough space to record onto. If you don't have this album, buy it. Buy it right now. There has to be a reason why it's the third highest US selling album of all time. Find out why for yourself. Submitted by a reviewer (Kirkwood, MO) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

If there is such a thing as an average 1960s soul singer, Bobby Patterson is it. That's not meant as a putdown, necessarily; it's just the way it is. He drew from both Northern and Southern soul styles, ...

Greatest Hits Vols. 1 & 2 music CDs
$16.29 Starved for affection, yet marching deliriously on, the most critically cudgeled British band of 1976 released their second album just six months after their debut Late Night Movies, All Night Brainstorms, almost as if they'd never read a word that had been written about them. And certainly as if they never cared about any of them. Figments of Emancipation is so much the son of its predecessor that the two could have been recorded in tandem. They were certainly written so -- most of the album was present in the Doctors of Madness' live set even before they recorded Brainstorms. Whereas that album haunted the city of the damned, however, Figments is a less modest and, in consequence, considerably less inhumane set. The self-aggrandizing "Doctors of Madness" is an arrogantly swaggering sucker punch, while the sharp segue between the opening "Brothers" and "Suicide City" effortlessly echoed the medley effect which conjoined Late Night Movies' opening suite -- only without the ...

Greatest Hits Vols. 1 & 2 songs
$16.19 A slight cautionary note here: although all of the artists on this compilation had affiliations with the Beatles' Apple company in the late '60s, just one (the Iveys, who later became Badfinger) actually recorded for Apple Records. The others -- Focal Point, Grapefruit, Paintbox, Ways and Means, and John Fitch -- released songs administered by Apple's publishing company, without actually releasing material on the Apple label. That clarification noted, this is a decent anthology of obscure late-'60s British rock (ten of the 18 tracks previously unreleased) that's pretty far toward the "pop" side of "pop-psychedelia," as well as bearing a tangential connection to one of the most interesting pop enterprises of the time, Apple. By far the most famous of the performers were the Iveys, and Badfinger fans will be excited by the appearance of five previously unissued Iveys demos here, only one of which ("Maybe Tomorrow") would be re-recorded for official release. Though these aren't ...
