The statement may raise a few eyebrows, but this ex-Menudo hunk has come up a stunner of an album. A track like "Livin' La Vida Loca" makes a seamless amalgam of Pan-Americana in which surf guitars, electronica, and Mariachi horns rock together in fine form, and its Spanglish chorus feels as ordinary a pop hook as any other. Much of the album's appeal lies in the fact that it makes a booty-shakin' piece of art of North America's sometimes divisive bilingual reality. "The Cup Of Life," with its Carnaval-esque splendor, gathers a good deal of steam. "Shake Your Bon-Bon" and "Maria" do more of the same, while "She's All I Ever Had" and "Be Careful" take it more sweet 'n mellow. Subtle yet urgent, the latter track has the one and only Madonna adding heat to the pot, with English and Spanish pleading that twists into a fiery double helix with Ricky's soft crooning.

Rolling Stone (6/10/99, p.123) - 3 out of 5 - "...The history of Latin pop is crowded with distinction. Yet often enough on RICKY MARTIN, this sudden superstar and his unsleepy producers make it into a new thrill." Spin (8/99, p.155) - 7 (out of 10) - "...new romancer Ricky Martin...rolls as poly-traditional as any dream of Beck Hansen...it's all about people pleasing people....[Martin] knows how to set the backfields in motion..." "Baby One More Time" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Britney Spears takes her rightful place among bubble gum pop icons at the turn of the millennium with BABY ONE MORE TIME. Earlier known for her part in Disney's revamped "Mickey Mouse Club," Britney successfully turned singer at a mere 16 years of age. She navigates the choppy waters of young love with style, passion and lots of fun. She's got all the charm of '80s forebears like Debbie Gibson and Tiffany, coupled with a hip '90s edge.
With sweet nylon guitar work reminiscent of Richard Marx productions, "Sometimes" warns a potential love of her need for time and patience, rolling along nicely with a slow groove and a big beat. The Jets' gem "You've Got It All" shines brightly as ever with Britney's girlish allure. Take note, however, that Britney's not all bubbles--with an obvious influence from Mariah Carey, she glides quite ably through the key changes and delivers octave leaps and vibratos that should melt just about ...
| | Backstreet Boys Millenium CD (1999)
Ricky Martin CD music
$9.75 MILLENNIUM was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Album Of The Year and for Best Pop Vocal Album. "I Want It That Way" was nominated for Record Of The Year and for Song Of The Year.
"Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.
The Backstreet Boys self-titled 1997 debut album endeared the group to millions of teens and pre-teens with its radio-friendly blend of pop harmonies and danceable beats. MILLENNIUM finds the Boys in the unenviable position of following up the mind-blowing success of the first album. Less ambitious artists might wither under such pressure, but the Backstreet Boys beat the dreaded sophomore slump in style. In the tradition of the debut, the album is a combination of romantic ballads guaranteed to make your little sister sob, and syncopated, eminently danceable, upbeat tunes. Throughout, it's the rich combination of the members' voices that creates the distinctive sound the group's legion of fans has grown to love. Most notably though, there is an added maturity in both the songs and the performances. It seems, regardless of their fans' fervent wishes, that even Backstreet Boys can't help but grow up.

Ricky Martin music CDs
$9.35 "I Need To Know" was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
"Dimelo" was nominated for the 2000 Latin Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance and won the 2000 Latin Grammy Award for Record Of The Year. "De La Vuelta" was nominated for Best Tropical Song.
"You Sang To Me" was nominated for the 2001 Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.
Marc Anthony has hopped on a shiny new pop music train with his self-titled English debut. While longtime fans won't find much of the salsa here that they've always known him for, there's still plenty of continuity in the fact that he's as fine a singer as ever and a sure romantic. Then again, Marc Anthony has always been about putting his own spin on his roots, so would-be critics should be warned--he won't be tied down.
The single "I Need to Know," with its pulsing salsa horns and piano, was a ubiquitous item on mainstream radio that clearly rode the fast waters of the Latin floodgate opened by Ricky Martin and others. "That's Okay" delves a bit deeper into the clave, while the plaintive "How Could I" combines the fluid fire of Spanish guitar with soft, slow-jam programming. A sweet pop nugget, "You Sang to Me" offers soaring waves of keyboard as Anthony makes his amorous declarations with breathy urgency.

| | Ricky Martin Vuelve CD (1998)
Ricky Martin songs
$9.65 VUELVE won the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance.
So he did time in Menudo, so what? He was young and impressionable. You don't hold New Edition against Bobby Brown, do you? The point is that Ricky Martin is a fully-realized, mature artist who has a lot to offer to the world of Latin music. VUELVE shows the range of Martin's talents, from the propulsive Latin rhythms of "Por Arriba, Por Abajo" and "Lola, Lola" to the Anglicized power balladry of the title track, with plenty of stops in between. Somehow, it all fits together seamlessly. One of the reasons may be the economy of the tunes; Martin likes 'em short and sweet, and nothing on VUELVE sticks around long enough to wear out its welcome.
Engineers include: Benny Faccone, Rik Pekkonen, Steve Churchyard.

Following her smash hit THE WOMAN IN ME was no easy task for Shania Twain and husband/producer Mutt Lange. With COME ON OVER the sexy vixen of modern country has carved out a bigger niche for herself that is sure to please her growing throng of fans. With a huge helping of rock and roll added to her country trimmings, Twain proves her success has been no fluke. As a rule, she goes out of her way to break the traditional Nashville mold. Even her songwriting skills are at the forefront; Shania and Mutt co-wrote all the songs on this collection.
Sounding like a disciple of Linda Ronstadt and Tina Turner with a dash of Tanya Tucker, Twain launches into country-club rockers like "Man! I Feel Like A Woman!," "Don't Be Stupid (You Know I Love You)," and "Rock This Country!" with a fervor. A guest shot by singer Bryan White adds a touch of drama to the powerful "From This Moment On." Top-40 flavored tunes abound on the rest of the disc including "Love Gets Me Every Time," "If You Wanna Touch Her, Ask!," and even the country-fied hip-hop of "Honey, I'm Home." Finally, the acoustic ballad "You've Got A Way" adds a soft touch to round out the set.

"No Me Ames" was nominated for the 2000 Latin Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance By A Duo Or Group With Vocal.
The multi-talented dancer/singer/actress Jennifer Lopez fulfilled a lifelong dream with the release of ON THE 6, an album that gets its title from the subway she took from her Bronx home to Manhattan for dance training and auditions. The overnight hit "If You Had My Love" helped show the world Jennifer's emotive and vulnerable vocal style. With the collaborative help of Emilio Estefan Jr., the dance rhythms and salsa brass of "Let's Get Loud" are refreshing and infectious. In the bittersweet "Should've Never," her sultry spoken-Spanish vocals make the song incredibly sexy in its desperation. "Feelin' So Good" has a hip-hop feel, thanks to songwriting and production help from the omnipresent Sean "Puffy" Combs. Collecting a debt from her appearance in one of his music videos, Marc Anthony makes a surprise appearance on "No Me Ames." With a seamless skill at singing ballads, R & B, and dance music, ...
