The simply titled LIVE offers a glimpse of AIC's moody, explosive live performances, captured between 1990 and 1996. Pre-dating the band's Columbia recordings is the country-punk track "Queen of the Rodeo," also found on the box set MUSIC BANK. This track is a notable inclusion, showing that Alice In Chains have a sense of humor behind the wall of musical gloom they've made for themselves.
Best displayed on "Would?" and "Angry Chair," the tasteful, all-too-often overlooked drumming of Sean Kinney shines brightly here. The included version of "Love Hate Love" has a Doors-like intensity, with Layne Staley's vocal dynamics piloting the track like a vessel. LIVE is short on stage banter and thankfully long in unpolished, raw, powerful live recordings of these seminal Seattle hard rock masters.
Recorded live between 1990 & 1996.

$6.75 Long before the phrase, "Seattle scene" spoke of an impact that a new generation of musicians was having on rock music, Alice in Chains was struggling to be recognized in the shadow of bands that were more focused on image than craft. On FACELIFT, the band's major label debut, Alice in Chains proved that its fusion of blues, hard rock, and gritty imagery was a force to be reckoned with. While college radio stations ate up fare like "It Ain't Like That" and "We Die Young," the song "Man in a Box" became a banner track that pushed the band into the forefront of heavy rotation on MTV and the playlists of mainstream rock radio stations.
Vocalist Layne Staley's moody, dynamic vocals on "Love, Hate, Love" tell a chilling tale of a homicidal psychotic lamenting and musing over what he's done to his lover. On tracks such as "Sea of Sorrow" and "I Can't Remember," guitarist Jerry Cantrell shows equally impressive skill in Sabbath-styled riffing, blues licks, and Hendrix-influenced solos. Alice in Chains made a brash musical and lyrical statement that gave the stale era of thrash and hair metal a much-needed facelift.
Recorded at London Bridge Studios, Seattle, Washington and Capitol Recording Studios, Hollywood, California.
Personnel: Layne Staley (vocals); Jerry Cantrell (guitar, background vocals); Sean Kinney (drums, percussion, ...
| | Rainbow Rising CD (1976) Remastered
Live CD music
$7.29 As the drums kick into the fierce opener "Tarot Woman," it's obvious that RISING delivers directly to your door. It is the band's second release, and a vast improvement over RICHIE BLACKMORE'S RAINBOW. With a revamped lineup that sounds like it had been touring together for years, the album takes no prisoners. "Starstruck" is a classic groove reminiscent of guitarist Blackmore's ex-band Deep Purple. Blackmore replaced everyone from the first album's lineup except vocalist Ronnie Dio with Jimmy Bain (bass), Tony Carey (keyboards), and Cozy Powell (drums). Dio shows what he's got with a stellar performance on "Do You Close Your Eyes." "Stargazer" is the band's "Kashmir," an epic eight-minute track that could stand as its signature song. "A Light in the Black" features the skin bashing of the late, great Mr. Powell.
RISING is a must-have for any fan of Dio, Blackmore, or classic metal. Five musicians came together for a one-shot moment that won't be duplicated. The album is magic.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Personnel: Ronnie James Dio (vocals); Ritchie Blackmore ...

| | VH1 Presents The Corrs Live In Dublin CD (2002)
Live CD music
$6.39 This audio document of The Corrs' Dublin homecoming concert has pretty much everything fans of Irish pop could wish for, including an appearance from Bono in his earthly incarnation, fresh from an audience with President George W. Bush. It's to the band's credit that the charismatic singer fails to steal the show, despite creditable efforts via an anthemized version of Ryan Adams' beautifully downtempo "When the Stars Go Blue," and a great, leering rendition of Lee Hazlewood and Nancy Sinatra's "Summer Wine."
Somewhat more mysteriously, Rolling Stone Ron Wood also turns up on what sounds dangerously close to a lounge version of Jimi Hendrix's "Little Wing," but this minor faux pas is redeemed by the Irish folk medley "Joy of Life/Trout in the Bath" which arguably features more full-on Irishness than the Dublin production of RIVERDANCE. There's also a lovely rendition of Neil Young's "Only Love Can Break Your Heart" that's topped only by Ron Wood's reappearance on a finale of the Stones' "Ruby Tuesday." VH1 PRESENTS THE CORRS LIVE IN DUBLIN is a fine mix of the band's greatest hits with a few well-chosen covers, which will doubtless reach out to new fans and longtime ...
| | Melissa Etheridge Yes I Am CD (1993)
Live music CDs
$10.39 "Come To My Window" won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance. "Come To My Window" and "I'm The Only One" were both nominated for Best Rock Song.
On her fourth album, Melissa Etheridge continues to write songs with a strong rock base and no sign of giving in to any kinds of trends. With the one-two punch of "I'm The Only One" and "Come To My Window," Etheridge manages to break through to bigger success on her own terms. YES I AM continues with tales of love within the lives of ordinary people while still managing to touch on a few different themes.
"All American Girl" mentions AIDS, while "Talking To My Angel" is about growing up alienated in a small town. An added bonus is the inclusion of "I Will Never Be The Same," a previously unreleased track which was one of a few Etheridge songs featured in the movie WELCOME HOME ROXIE CARMICHAEL.
Recorded at A&M Studios, Los Angeles, California.
Personnel: Melissa Etheridge (vocals, guitar, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Richard Wachtel, Waddy Wachtel (electric guitar); James Fearnley (accordion); Scott Thurston (keyboards); Mauricio-Fritz Lewak (drums, percussion).

| | Blackmore's Night Past Times With Good Company CDs (2003)
Live album
$12.19 For those fans still incapable (or unwilling) to accept Deep Purple guitar legend Ritchie Blackmore's defection from heavy metal glory into the acoustic renaissance music of Blackmore's Night, perhaps this double live album will finally drive the reality home. Recorded in May 2002, Past Times with Good Company (named after a traditional folk song written by none other than King Henry VIII) finds the obdurate guitarist and his conversely charming sparring partner and wife, vocalist Candice Night, performing before a few hundred friends in the Netherlands, dressed in suitably medieval garb -- of course! And after listening to the Baroque arrangements, minor-chord voicings, and even some of the lyrics to the likes of "Shadow of the Moon," "Under a Violet Moon," and "Morning Star," the leap from atop the Rainbow to the bowels of a musky, Middle Ages pub may no longer seem as far-fetched. To some extent, this is the result of a fuller musical backdrop provided by the duo's well-rounded supporting cast (highlighted by violinist Chris Devine), as compared to their at times rather spare studio efforts. But also easing what could be a difficult transition are occasional glimpses into Blackmore's past by way of Purple's "Soldier of Fortune" and Rainbow's surprisingly apropos (and electrified) "16th Century Greensleeves." See, it really isn't that big a stretch! Another plus for pure Blackmore disciples is hearing the master shred his acoustic guitar during the beautiful "Beyond the Sunset." And to earlier converts who may have yet to experience Blackmore's Night in a live setting, Past Times with Good Company will of course provide a perfect showcase. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia

$13.09 Recorded at the venerable New York City venue in the spring following the 9/11attacks, this live set by renegade folkie Ani DiFranco is palpably informed by those tragic events, as the singer/songwriter plainly indicates in the album's liner notes. With only her plaintive voice and acoustic guitar, DiFranco mesmerizes the audience with highly emotional songs, most notably an early version of the extended piece "Serpentine" and ...
